Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

Only one load of laundry can be in progress at one time. The previous load must be completely dry and put away before a new one can be started.

No new storage. If something doesn’t fit into the storage we already have then you need to get rid of something else.

Didn’t think we had any, but…

if anyone starts a ‘tap’ (I.e., tapping the mug with their spoon), they must finish to the tune of ‘shave and a haircut, two pence!’ Or the other person around must finish it for them.

If anyone asks ‘what do you want to do?’ The only correct answer is ‘I don’t know, what do you want to do?’ Preferably in a Liverpudlian accent. Iykyk.

oh and hard agree with the coffee/tea mugs. Same with the coffee and tea cafetière. Obv.

Not this again! 😂

Just the usual towel one which i think most people use,

White for hands, brown for feet, green for torso, thighs and seat, and in the cupboard beneath the stair, you'll find the red for pubic hair.

spiderlight · Yesterday 09:39

Our dog loves standing on the landing and sticking her head through the horizontal banister to have an eye-level fuss with anyone going downstairs. DS once commented that it made her look like a newsreader behind a desk. It is therefore the law that whenever she does this, everyone on the stairs has to exclaim 'Daisy's on telly!' with enormous delight and give her a huge fuss. She actually looks offended now if you do the fuss but not the announcement. Her particular favourite is if there's a towel drying over the banister - she will appear through the gap at one end and then the other to get two fusses.

I dont allow alcohol in my home , nobody can come in who has consumed it either. Having grown up with an alcoholic mother i dont have my kids around it at all. Theyve never been to a bar or pub and ill never take them to one either.

Handy for when you're planning that special meal of mushroom wellington.

Took me a sec 😂

What about a mum who is breastfeeding? Does she have to hide herself and the baby away?

The last person that breast fed a baby in my house was me more than 3 decades ago. And no i never once fed at the table. Only once did i feed at a cafe table and that was because they only had one toilet.

What sort of thing constitutes a Big Light Emergency?

Spiders or paramedics in the room. There is no other justifiable reason. ever.

Happychildless · Yesterday 10:14

No clutter very minimalist.
Thankfully i live alone.

It's just misophonia. Any loud crunching or slurping triggers a fight or flight response. My half-brother and my daughter have it too. When I was a teenager I could barely cope with family meals. Now I only have a problem with people eating whole apples or carrots (they're OK cut up). And people who slurp their tea. 😠

One of my collegues not only slurps his tea, but also (loudly) swills it around his mouth before swallowing. How I haven't murdered him and hidden the body yet is a mystery....

Can't agree more! The no music one actually broke my heart. (well I married a professional musician so that was never going to be a problem in my house!).
Honestly one of the greatest joys of my life at the moment when my 6 year old goes to the toilet, because she spends about half an hour in there improvising the most extraordinary, surrealist songs you can imagine. It's like some weird experimental comtempory opera every day in my house. Me and my DH frequently cry with laughter. We live in an apartment block so God knows what the neighbours think 😂

Same situation here - we work in music biz so it’s on an awful lot and not always stuff remotely to my taste -

Oh they'll definitely go.

LowlandLucky · Yesterday 10:36

Shoes off and hands washed as soon as you enter the house. Do not ever touch my mug, don't even wash it, in fact do not even look at it. Leave anything of yours lying around and it will cost you cash to get it back.

FatMrsHoot · 06/10/2026 22:53

What's in your loft then?!

This is going to be hugely outing to anyone who knows me, but we go screaming in the woods. My children are not allowed to scream in the car, house, or shops, or the street. We save it up until we go for a family walk in the woods and let it all out.

Good fun.

@FatMrsHoot - LOVE THIS!! When DD was younger we lived in the Middle East. At the time she was being bullied at school. I used to pick her up, drive into the desert, and say, "Let it all out" She would stand in the sand and scream and scream, and then get in the car, and we would drive home and make dinner. Very therapeutic! Many years after that I had a horrendous line manager who made my life an utter misery. I arrived at school pick up and DD could see I had been crying, so she said, "Let's go to the desert, Mum." I stood in the hot sand and screamed, "I hate you, Michelle!!" at the top of my voice, and felt much, much better afterwards. It's a great way of getting big feelings out so they lose their power!

Oh I know and when they are older thats fine but while they are children my home will be alcohol free.

Aarghhhh! I can't even cope with slurping in a TV programme.

I do not have any rules in my house, as I live alone, but I liked a MN rule that I saw once: "If you want cakes or biscuits, you make them yourself, and wash up afterwards!" It's one way to encourage slightly healthier eating!

Growing up, we didn't have any hard and serious rules. The most obscure one to outsiders would probably have been, "If it's white, it's wet". My mother painted the house a lot, so inevitably, someone would end up with white gloss paint on them from touching a door/the banister, and the cats and dog generally had a swish of white on their tails, too.

My sister moved house when my nieces were 3 and 6. After weeks of being told not to touch paintwork, they were paranoid about it for months after they moved in!

You are indeed lucky - our new build was extremely short of storage

Edited

For a while, we lived in an old cottage, with a long, L shaped landing. There was a floor-to-ceiling cupboard that ran the length of it. I LOVED it! So easy to get stuff out.

No chainsaws.
must be the only power tool that DH hasn't got but we don’t have a need for one and I think they are just far too dangerous. He would buy one if I relented though. God knows what for.

I live alone, and I bought a mini one to prune the shrubs in my garden.
