Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

So you impose it on everyone else you live with?!

I have a relative like this who doesn’t allow music in the car… makes long car journeys really dull 😢

I never played music when the children were growing up. Now they are adults, they listen to music through their headphones.

DH never really listens to music.

FloofyKat · 06/10/2026 22:33

Hmmm. Living alone I don’t really have any rules because everything is down to me. I probably ought to be stricter with myself but, hey, the cats don’t care!

I do have loft / garage storage envy, though. My new-build home is great in most respects but it’s crap for storage. There’s no garage, and my loft, says the builder, isn’t designed for storing stuff. Although this thread has made me think I might have put a couple of bin bags up there… wonder what’s in them ?!!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 06/10/2026 22:26

@DustyWindowsillsI really, really need you to elaborate, please.
I’ve got a feeling that there’s a great anecdote behind it.

It's just misophonia. Any loud crunching or slurping triggers a fight or flight response. My half-brother and my daughter have it too. When I was a teenager I could barely cope with family meals. Now I only have a problem with people eating whole apples or carrots (they're OK cut up). And people who slurp their tea. 😠

PancakePatty · 06/10/2026 22:34

I have 2 washing machines. One is for work clothes only.

Errolwasahero · 06/10/2026 22:36

Didn’t think we had any, but…

if anyone starts a ‘tap’ (I.e., tapping the mug with their spoon), they must finish to the tune of ‘shave and a haircut, two pence!’ Or the other person around must finish it for them.

If anyone asks ‘what do you want to do?’ The only correct answer is ‘I don’t know, what do you want to do?’ Preferably in a Liverpudlian accent. Iykyk.

oh and hard agree with the coffee/tea mugs. Same with the coffee and tea cafetière. Obv.

A rule I would like followed is "no starting the new toilet roll until the old one is used." My husband has a strange habit of unravelling the new toilet roll that lives on top of the medicine cabinet in the bathroom waaaay before the old one is done. It drives me batty.

This drives me absolutely nuts!

my dds do this and they are both teenagers

they will use half a toilet roll then get another one out, we had four on the go at one point ffs

so now I hide the toilet paper and will only replace it if the other one is getting low,

(shrug), they were warned)

FatMrsHoot · 06/10/2026 22:53

What's in your loft then?!

This is going to be hugely outing to anyone who knows me, but we go screaming in the woods. My children are not allowed to scream in the car, house, or shops, or the street. We save it up until we go for a family walk in the woods and let it all out.

Good fun.

Kickinthenostalgia · 06/10/2026 22:54

Our loft (well eaves) is absolutely brimming at the moment. With Halloween and Christmas decorations. Right now Santa is face planting the door.

one rule I try to keep on top of, is a bath mat in the bathroom, because what happens is everyone is too lazy but they will happily get another towel to out on the floor and I don’t wanna be washing towels non stop so I always make sure there’s a bath mat on the floor.

another one is, you can’t say you don’t like something unless you’ve tried it. And this is why my children are not completely fussy esters because they’ve practically tried most stuff and tbh if it’s meat they practically love most meats. ObviouslY there’s a few things they don’t like.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 06/10/2026 22:56

Whistling is banned.

Also emptying your pockets and leaving piles of coins around. Physical money gives me the heebies.

Also dont drink anything from my tea cups.

Cheeseplantalltheway · 06/10/2026 22:56

Do not move the toilet roll

No shoes in the house

No dogs in the house

No dogs wearing shoes in the house

I wish I could impose the rule of no licking yogurt pot tops. But I have tried and failed

Pedant61 · 06/10/2026 23:02

I think the only one in our house is - no TV in the living room.

Sofasmurfing · 06/10/2026 23:03

All dry goods must be decanted into neatly labelled kitchen Tupperware - flours, sugars, pulses, rice, pasta etc. No opened packets anywhere, and nothing hidden away at the back of cupboards quietly being forgotten about!

And toilet roll must be front-facing.

That’s really odd ☺️. Surely that’s what lofts are for? I wouldn’t want the Xmas decorations or camping equipment cluttering up the actual house but each to their own.

Ours is having 2 food waste bins and beware getting them mixed up. One is for our compost heap and one is for the council. DH is very particular and gets upset if good compost material goes in the council food waste (my bad)

I do this too! Just bought two new dedicated bins for each and feel really pleased with myself. The compost one helpfully says ‘Compost’ on the side.

You are nuts. What do you think the point of a loft is?

Defender90 · 06/10/2026 23:12

No farting at the table / during meals.

k didn’t realise I had this rule until Dad came for dinner on way home from helping DH with a job and he let one go. We both looked at him and I said oh we don’t do that.

Did I grow up with parents farting at the table? Did he just forget this etiquette since Mum died.

Anyway He’s never done it again.

CherryKerry · 06/10/2026 23:12

I totally get the attic thing....

DH and I have been clearing our loft out. Nearly 30 years of utter junk, including my 25 year old wedding dress that was absolutely filthy and covered in spider poo despite being in what I thought was a sealed box.

We've probably filled the car and been to the tip at least 20 times in last 3 months.

From this point, the only things allowed up there are suitcases and xmas decorations.

Anything else that previously would be put up there will go straight in the tip.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 06/10/2026 23:16

FindingMeno · 06/10/2026 20:35

No farting at the dinner table.

This is ours too. Fart wherever you want except near food. And if it’s in the car you must wind the window down to blast it out.

Boreded · 06/10/2026 23:18

I absolutely wish I could get my husband to stop putting random junk in the loft.

Though…it has just dawned on me that he is off work next week, so maybe it is time he emptied the thing. Thanks 🙏

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 06/10/2026 23:20

We also have an empty loft. All the junk is dotted around the house. Most of it belongs to DH of course.

PoliteRoseJoker · 06/10/2026 23:22

GreenEyesMillennial · 06/10/2026 20:15

No shoes in the house. That’s my only rule I think?

we do have xmas decorations and suitcases in the loft because we have no space for those in the garage…

😂😂😂
I wish I had a garage...

sandgrown · 06/10/2026 23:26

No singing or music??? How boring it must be at your houses. One of my biggest joys, when my children were young, was singing with them in the car .

ThatLemonBee · 06/10/2026 23:26

Don’t speak a lot with me before I have at least 2 expressos in the morning

No washing at the weekend - like clothes washing. I work from home, I put a wash on a couple of days a week (there’s only two of us) and then husband who doesn’t work from home thinks we should be doing that kind of thing; washing, hanging it out, dragging it back in. Listen - I did that during the week when you didnt see it happen - weekends are not wash days.

I have the same rule for myself, get jobs done and take the weekend off. Dh or kids can do whatever they want once they don’t make work for me.
