Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Sofasmurfing · 06/10/2026 19:03

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

It's not quite a household rule, but applies to my whole extended family.

If someone is taken into hospital, you are banned from tidying/cleaning/moving anything in their bedroom (apart from gathering requested/needed items) until they come home.

We had a spate of people deciding to "make their room nice" for people in hospital including deep cleans, minor renovations, or even just a good tidy, and each time the person died in hospital. Now everyone is banned from changing things until the person is discharged.

Now you get shopping delivered and a couple of people turning up to help clean the day you get home instead.

Toilets have kids for a reason, close them.

Why on earth....? Why can't they have squash or Ribena?

My kids never had squash or Ribena, unless it was a special occasion.
Because its chemical crap.

Is that where potties come from? 😂

Of course! They shed the plastic and get a porcelain shell as they get older. 😀

No eating meals upstairs ! Very rarely use our main ceiling light in living room like PP. No slippers to be worn outside tho DH usually forgets 😩

Huh. Guess I'm behind the times. We all drank it without a second thought as kids in the 70s/80s/90s. I don't have kids, so I haven't really thought about it. Seems like there's much more obvious bad foods, like chips and fizzy drinks and fried food. I'm sure you're right though.

🤣🤣🤣 It makes so much sense! Toilets are just grown-up potties!

We never once gave our kids squash, juice or fizzy drinks. They don’t need them and they don’t want them if they’ve never had been introduced.

In their early 20s now, they’ve still never developed a taste for crappy drinks or even fresh juice. I don’t know why parents ever give them, tbh.

Yes, of course! But, the towel used to dry one's hands is not to be used by the next person.

I think you need to show your family how to wash their hands properly - yuck!!

Pigtailsandall · Today 08:21

Re: lofts, I'd love have "nothing on the loft" -rule one day. I agree that storage areas like that are often where things go to die and then clearing it out becomes a massive job later in life.
Currently we only have a small cupboard so we need to use (the very low) loft space for suitcases, guest bedding and out-of-season clothes. I try making sure other stuff doesn't creep up there but it occasionally it does and seeing it makes me unhappy

@ClaudeHoppermy in laws have a little note on their loo saying everyone must sit down!! They have nine grandsons so…(but adults are supposed to too).

Anyone who has cleared up after men and boys will understand that.

I don’t understand why more men aren’t mortified that this is a common failing of theirs that can be easily avoided. Men sit down to wee when doing the other, so why not all the time OR, and hear me out, clean up after themselves!!!

Big light in the living room only used in emergencies.

I'm guessing you're Scottish 😄

I call these lights the psycho lights and my stepkids caught on. Now if one of them puts it on the other will go “psycho light!” and alert me to it 😂

TBF, a lot of the rules posted here aren't weird. 🤷‍♀️

I haven't read many that aren't!! Seriously I am amazed at the way some people live. And to inflict your weird hang ups on other members of your family is insane. I'm going to read some of these to my husband to make him realise how lucky he is...

No outdoor shoes indoors unless it’s an emergency 🚨 ( desperate loo dash to downstairs loo is considered an emergency 🚨 🏃🏻‍♀️🚽)
No food or drinks upstairs , except for water ( unless someone is bed bound poorly 😷) because I’ve had way too many oops 😬 upstairs moments with my family and had to hire a carpet cleaner.
Plastic food tubs and punnets , empty tins and jars are to go in the utility room sink for rinsing first as my kitchen sink is some sort of easily stained material.
Do not answer the front door or go out the front door without closing the other hall door ( dog is a runner and his ears are painted on ) unless D Dog is coming along too and is wearing his lead already .

Some of these are not that weird at all, just very sensible. I have many complicated cup/mug rules depending on the drink and type of said drink. Tea (without milk) china cup and saucer, tea with milk ( builders tea) in a big fat mug but not a normal mug ( see later) . Coffee in a small dainty mug, even smaller if expresso. Half size if flat white, obviously. Mugs need to be a certain pleasing shape to be allowed cupboard space, hate the bog standard straight up/straight down type. Sometimes I will refuse a beverage if rules are not followed…well, just pretend it’s accidentally gone cold so I don’t look too bat shit.

I also have "rules" about mugs. I have bone china ones with flowers on that I use in the spring and summer, and chunky earthenware ones for when the weather turns cooler.
which is so tiny that the dog has to go outside to turn round 😀

I hate shouting around the house, so my rule is if you can’t see someone’s face then you don’t speak to them.
my partner hates it and thinks it’s nuts.

Oh God, I get you. My DP shouts up the stairs for me and it gets my back up. It's inconsiderate if our lodger is in bed, and I just find it really crass behaviour too.

AlwaysExtraHot · Today 09:48

WendyHoused · Yesterday 18:01

We have tea mugs and coffee mugs and you must NEVER make coffee in a tea mug or vice versa.

See, I have cups that you MUST NOT make tea in, just coffee, but there are no cups that you MUST NOT make coffee in, just tea. I don't know why it's not the same both ways but it isn't.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · Today 10:28

As someone who’s just helped their dad sort out his loft - you’re doing the right thing. He called me two weeks ago and said I need to help him now so it won’t be a pain in the arse when he dies, and I thought oh okay that’s pretty sensible I’ll come and help… how the fuck has one man accumulated so much shit in the two years he’s lived in that house? I’m impressed the roof hasn’t caved in.

envbeckyc · Today 10:48

No food or drinks (apart from water) upstairs!

We never have breakfast in bed - the thought of crumbs on sheets freaks me out!

We only vacuum and clean upstairs once a week, while we change all bedding.
Beds and general tidying is daily, but cleaning all surfaces, windows etc… is weekly.

No food or drinks in the lounge area!

We have carpet in there and don’t want spills, a dirty carpet or sticky furniture. It’s open plan to the dining area where there are tiles and our dining room table where you can see the TV.

I hate sticky houses!

I don’t blame you. I’m in the process of emptying a very full loft and it’s pretty horrendous. I wish I’d never put a thing in there, and it will stay empty from now on.

There might be stuff worth a fortune up there!

My DD's friend's family has no dining table. The kids eat off trays on the carpet. I do find that a bit weird.

Couldn’t stand that, it’s slovenly. Even the tiniest room can have a fold up table.
