Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

I wish I’d had the nothing in the loft rule.

ours still has baby stuff in eg old car seats. My kids are mid 20s now. We can’t clear it out because they are covered in batshit. Literally. and I refuse to enter.

My DD's friend's family has no dining table. The kids eat off trays on the carpet. I do find that a bit weird.

If it's not a space issue, or cultural tradition then that is a bit peculiar. As in you'd think they'd just eat off their lap/tray on the couch (if they have one..haha. Assume my family was the only one without!) if no desire for dining table? I guess as long as everyone is fed and has a place to sit that's all that matters!

Oldrivet · Yesterday 23:06

I have never been in my loft or attic in all the houses I've lived in. I'm scared of spiders and any other living creatures that may lurk.
My mum however has hers (and her house) full to brim of crap like whisks of our hair from when we were 2.

We haven’t even opened the loft in our new build in five years so nothing is in there - in the last house so much stuff had been put up there and forgotten about and ended up dirty and damaged , when we moved had to sort it all out and said never again.

Me too! Ten years in and my loft hatch has never been opened!

Oldrivet · Yesterday 23:08

It's not a rule though. I don't have a partner and live with my kids. I'd be happy for someone else to put shit up there.

Imdunfer · Yesterday 23:25

No shit left on a toilet bowl. You brush it off when it's fresh and easy.

No dirty stuff on the draining board. It either goes in the dishwasher or gets washed by hand there and then.

This drives me absolutely nuts!

my dds do this and they are both teenagers

they will use half a toilet roll then get another one out, we had four on the go at one point ffs

so now I hide the toilet paper and will only replace it if the other one is getting low,

(shrug), they were warned)

My mum did this, as a child you’d have to yell from the toilet for someone to get you a toilet roll from the cupboard downstairs.

As an adult, I have storage in each bathroom for multiple toilet rolls.

That's v weird about the loft. You're giving up a lot of storage space. AND, just think, you're paying a mortgage (I assume) on that space but not using it! You should use all the space you're paying for! I understand about clutter concerns, but you just have to keep on top of it, and institute a rule that people can't just open the hatch and throw stuff up there.

Having said that, I'm the sort of person who would sit on the stairs, if I had any, in order to get the most use out of the space I'm paying through the nose for. My parents had a staircase that turned a corner and there was a very wide step on that turn. I'd have sat there when using my laptop sometimes, had it been my house.

Only water allowed at meal times. Juice/milk at breakfast but at lunch and evening meal, we all have water from a jug on the table. Kids can have squash at other times but water only with meals.

Why on earth....? Why can't they have squash or Ribena?

This made me think of Shaun of the Dead!

That's exactly where it's from! We love that film.

AlwayAnxious · Today 00:30

But its not weird

AlwayAnxious · Today 00:52

Heating is only be turnt on if you already have a long sleeve and socks on and you are still cold
Heating is not going to go on if you are half naked

Curtains to be closed when indoor lights are on / when its dark outside

I am an avid reader. Always have been but I have never ever read a book in the loo.
It's plain uncomfy.

Me too. I have upstairs books and downstairs books and a kindle which is mobile. But reading in the loo is revolting, and anyway, I have a healthy bowel and bladder so it probably wouldn’t be worth me trying to remember where I had got up to.

And as for reading in the bath? No point. Isn’t that why they invented radios?

seats are for bums not feets

all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not

don't make tea in my cup

I don't drink tea & barely coffee but I have a Harry Potter mug I brought all the way back from Thailand with the book "The Deathly Hallows" when it was released there first, time wise, that would cause mayhem if someone removed it from the cupboard

So yeah I suppose that's a rule 😆

khgguikicks · 06/10/2026 20:09

I’ve raised my teens with this mantra. I don’t ask for a lot, but for the love of god, don’t be a dick.

Our version is DBAA (Don't Be An Asshole) my son is 9 so he has a few more years before he's given the code but still I salute yours

No shouting or trying to start a conversation from another room. Go and find the person you’re yelling for. It wouldn’t be acceptable at work or school so why do it at home.

Agree with this! I was in Tescos earlier & a couple were separated by an aisle or two & were shouting "blah, where are you?" "WHAT?" until they found each other... & they had their children with them too

CrazyMidget · Today 01:42

Oh, when people start speaking to me WHEN I'M NOT EVEN IN THE SAME ROOM! That is really, really annoying, because people who do that, do it all the time. I live alone these days, so I don't have to worry about it, but I'm feeling triggered by remembering how annoying it is! Effectively, the person is telling you to come here. I would just refuse to answer.

Mylittlepea · Today 02:33

No poos in the en-suite 💩
downstairs loo is the place for that except in an absolute emergency.
I don’t want to smell it from my bed…

DarkForces · 06/10/2026 20:07

We only have one household rule... don't be a dick. Seems to cover every scenario we've come up against so far.

Ours is don’t be an asshole and don’t play with assholes. It came about because of some kids at the park being really awful to younger children. It just popped out, we don’t play with assholes let’s go get a Icecream. It’s a bit crass but they were the worst and their parents were ignoring the behaviour.

It's not weird to me. Lofts are subject to extremes of temperature, they are slightly awkward to access, and a fire hazard if full. I can understand people storing suitcases and Christmas decorations there if there's nowhere else to store them, but shoving things up there that you never look at again - pointless procrastination.

@Sofasmurfing i have exactly the same rule- nothing is allowed to go into the loft, not even Xmas decs. I am unsteady on ladders ditto my other half so it would be madness to store stuff up there

The no music one is tragic, we play music all the time, couldn't live without it.

Some of these are pure batshit and so joyless and confining that I feel pity for the people and animals forced to live with you.

I love music on too, very happy and soothing.
One of the great things is that if it annoys anyone you can put the earphones on, listen to what you want and the volume you want so everyone is happy.

And again, are you here to participate, or criticise?

Perhaps you need a lesson in reading?

Edited

But you are criticising them (!) for making an absolutely valid point!
