Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

I do not have any rules in my house, as I live alone, but I liked a MN rule that I saw once: "If you want cakes or biscuits, you make them yourself, and wash up afterwards!" It's one way to encourage slightly healthier eating!

Growing up, we didn't have any hard and serious rules. The most obscure one to outsiders would probably have been, "If it's white, it's wet". My mother painted the house a lot, so inevitably, someone would end up with white gloss paint on them from touching a door/the banister, and the cats and dog generally had a swish of white on their tails, too.

That’s our rule!

Still in place 😁

I don’t think I do. I hate anyone leaving dirty cups in the sink but no one listens even though we have a dishwasher!
I have a double loft and it’s full up there, I still have my teens baby clothes up there!
It really does need sorting.
No shoes on in the house but not really a rule , we just all do it.

ChocolateCinderToffee · Yesterday 21:10

I don't really know what my weird rules are because I live on my own and really you need someone else to point out what they are to you.

'Shoes off', but that's not weird or unusual.

There's nothing in my loft because I have no ladder up to it and wouldn't dare use one if I had one.

lololove · Yesterday 21:11

At home as kids, we were called by our full names constantly. Think Thomas and Catherine rather than Tom and Kate/Cathy. (not our names)

My brother is known by EVERYONE as his shortened version of his name but even as we head to our 50s I can't do it. It's second nature to still use full term

TBF, a lot of the rules posted here aren't weird. 🤷‍♀️

it supports the pointy roof which allows the rain to run off, its also excellent insulation.

Yes this.

Just because there's a space, it doesn't mean you have to fill it with stuff 🤷🏻

When going to the corner shop, it is law that you have to ask, in an exhausted, hungover voice "Do you want anything from the shop?"
And the other person MUST answer "Cornetto "

This made me think of Shaun of the Dead!

HloldingonbYathread · Yesterday 21:20

No one is ever allowed to use the upstairs shower. It works perfectly but has never been used. 2 downstairs, I don’t want another one to clean and I’m scared of leaks

NazMedusa · Yesterday 21:20

No shoes indoors. No food to be taken upstairs. No swearing. We always eat dinner together as a family. If you make a mess, you clean it up.

I dont go as far as banning Xmas Dec's from going up there, but that is all that's in my loft. They are only up there as I have nowhere else to put them. I think that if you need the loft for storage (apart from Xmas decs) you have too much stuff.

Don't be a dick

Family motto.

Or not enough house?!

Lots of people are busy saying they don't use the loft but then saying they do use the garage. I have literally one cupboard in my entire house 😂 so everything from Christmas decorations, to spare loo rolls, to suitcases to the opposite season's duvets lives in the loft. I can't not own a suitcase just because I don't have a cupboard to store it in!

LookingForHopeAndInspiration · Yesterday 21:43

After my granny passed away my mother has now cleared her own loft. I swear she saw everything her mother left and struggled when they had to empty her house. She doesn't want that for us and just keeps their favourite things now, but nothing in the loft!

Horses7 · Yesterday 21:46

Our loft is packed but we try to reduce it every year.
Only guests can use downstairs loo so in theory it’s easily checked and is always pristine!
Shoes off but don’t expect guests to take them off.
Not in the house .. but on a country walk if there’s a kissing gate we always kiss (but only each other).

Saz12 · Yesterday 21:55

Strict "one in, one out" rule for Stuff, and clothes. So, want to buy new jumper? Fine, which of your old ones are you needing to replace?

Cattenberg · Yesterday 22:01

GreenEyesMillennial · 06/10/2026 20:15

No shoes in the house. That’s my only rule I think?

we do have xmas decorations and suitcases in the loft because we have no space for those in the garage…

See that makes sense. Ditto camping equipment. Basically, it's fine to keep stuff in the loft that you do use seasonally every (or almost every) year.

On the other hand, all the stuff that you no longer use should probably go. Outgrown toys, books and clothes, equipment for hobbies that you've long lost interest in, presents you never knew what to do with - don't just dump them all up there. Maybe you could keep a very small number of items for sentimental reasons, but if you don't love, say, your favourite children's books enough to make room for them in the house, then maybe they should go too.

It's a strange feeling to clear out someone else's belongings. My mum still has my aunt's qualification certificates because my aunt worked hard for them and it doesn't feel right to my mum to throw them out. But how long should we keep them for?

Cattenberg · Yesterday 22:11

We don't really have any sensible house rules. We have "lazy Sundays", where we lounge about in bed on Sunday mornings.

DD's Christmas stocking isn't stretchy and has a fairly narrow neck, but we're kind of stuck with it because I had her name embroidered on it. She's had a Jellycat elf since she was tiny, and so we have a little tradition in which Father Christmas brings DD a wrapped book which doesn't fit in the stocking and the elf sits on top of it. (The Jellycat elf also gets into Christmas mischief with the bloody Elf on the Shelf, but isn't as naughty).

zigazigaaaing · Yesterday 22:14

No shoes in the house, no ipads or games consoles. table manners are really important to me, so sitting properly, not getting down, no toilet talk/messing around from the kids. oh and no swearing

OMG another “nothing in the loft” person!! Hello friend 👋🏻 😂. My DH knows not to even suggest putting things in the loft now - it’s a hard no from me.

We are absolutely not allowed to stand naked on the stairs with a pair of socks tucked between our arse cheeks, shouting, "Mummy l'm a squirrel!"

This one might be specific to my DDs.

I've had a rubbish day and that made me howl! So funny! Thank you!

zigazigaaaing · Yesterday 22:35

no you tube!

BillieWiper · Yesterday 22:38

No toilet brushes.
For some reason no doorbell. But am considering one. Same with cat flap.

When I was a kid we didn't have a couch. My parents had a chair each and I sat on the floor! We definitely weren't in poverty or didn't have space so idk the reason really. I'm very happy to have one now!

Lilyhatesjaz · Yesterday 22:49

I think I go against many peoples rules. I like to switch on both the main ceiling lights in the living room, I hate sitting in the half dark.
Music only goes on occasionally during washing up, and my loft is completely full of stuff.
We do always sit at the table for meals with no phones, and no spiders must be killed, I will catch them and put them outside if they are bothering DH.

My DD's friend's family has no dining table. The kids eat off trays on the carpet. I do find that a bit weird.

Mum and dad had an huge expensive rug in the middle of our lounge. Us children weren’t allowed to step on it. If guests came they were allowed. Always felt very unfair!
