Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

No shoes in the house

Washing hands when you come from outside

No screens on table when eating together but had to relax it with teens when eating alone

No screens/devices in bedroom overnight; but again had to relax it a bit when teen got older/studying for A levels

No food in bedrooms; again gave up when they got to teens as they snack in their rooms.

Meals are normally eaten at the table.

Bathrooms doors close.

I can’t say everyone comply with everything; apart from no shoes in the house and msin meals at dinner table.

I don't have stuff on floors, except of course furniture and rugs (but I also have very few rugs). I have to have clear floors. I can't stand things like storage boxes under beds, backpacks on the floor, laundry racks folded behind the sofa etc. Hoovering must take minimal time.

Hand towel straight into laundry basket after poo hands.

Don't your guests/friends/family wash their hands? Ugh.

I never played music when the children were growing up. Now they are adults, they listen to music through their headphones.

DH never really listens to music.

Goodness me, how joyless! 😳

Yes, of course! But, the towel used to dry one's hands is not to be used by the next person.

Mine is: no outdoor shoes inside; no sitting on beds/ chairs in the street clothes; preferably changing into "house clothes" as soon as you home.

Also, never wear anything twice.

Contrary to what it may sound like I'm not a clean freak and would happily wallow in my own filth over the weekend. I just hate the idea of the outdoor dirt in my house and dont like wearing anything that doesn't smell just washed.

Random321 · Yesterday 19:27

No animals.
No eggs.
Shoes must be worn.

My house doesn’t have a useable loft so I’m very jealous if anyone who does. I have boxes from my previous house that will go in my next house’s loft.
I think the only rule we had was that the person who cooks dinner does not do the washing up.
No take your shoes off in the house rule and I hate it when I go to houses that enforce it. I’m short and generally have some footwear with a small feel so if I have to take them off I feel like a midget amongst giants 🙄

Also, no TV. Never watch TV, dont know anything about current TV programs and dont feel like I'm missing out. DC is the same.

The only one i can think of here is No.2s upstairs bathroom only. Wee only d/s loo. Unless the elderly or ill relatives visit, then it's a no rule day, but plenty of window opening when they've gone home. 😊

Also my show t towel is not to be used

Wow how old is your dc?? Ive never met a child who doesn't enjoy a it of TV.

bittertwisted · Yesterday 19:35

Missing the point of the thread but in my world it’s an attic, not a loft
is this just my family or is it a northern thing?

Oh this is great, I have a kindred spirit here! I can't remember the last time I even turned the TV on! It's only there for show and the occasional visitor who wants to see a match or something - the anti social one ha ha. Why I am paying for all those bloody channels I have no idea. Note to self....

(Just me here, no one else, which makes it rather ridiculous to have the bells and whistles TV service in the first place!).

So what's the point of washing one's hands? They should be clean before drying, so the towel would be fine.

I think that is odd. Lofts are for storage in my book, especially of the "out of sight, out of mind" variety. 😎

I'm not aware I have any weird rules, but my three DDs would doubtless disagree.

My own parents did - they were the only ones allowed to be known by shortenings of their names was one, and our friends would be publicly corrected if they did it, which was cringeworthy.

Also, the car was never to be left parked on the drive. It always had to be put in the garage, which was not used for much other storage.

This was the same for us. My mum was known as a shortening of her name but if anyone rang for one of us and said is.......there. They would say there's noone of that name here and hang up!! This did soften when we became adults.

Only insulation in my loft so I'm with you .

EscapedLion · Yesterday 19:39

No sharing of bath towels, ever! Everyone has their own towel on their own hook and it is not to be deviated from!

wet hands transfer any surviving bacteria etc to the towel

Oh....you have OCD. We're all surrounded by bacteria, all the time, everywhere.
