Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

No scrolling Munsnet during dinner, or sex.

Comma has a crucial role here!

I absolutely hate shoes being worn in the house. I do honestly think sometimes OH & DD put their shoes on specially to walk on the carpets. We put our shoes on to go out then one of them will remember something they need from upstairs or the front room & walk their shoes on the carpet. It drives me insane

I also have a weird thing about only having 1 cooked meal a day. If I have a sandwich for lunch I'll have a cooked dinner & vice versa. Dd1 recently asked me if her memory was correct in thinking I made her a snacky tea if she'd had cooked lunch at school. When I confirmed that she was right she looked so outraged I almost thought she was going to ring the NSPCC!

I used to not bother, then we stayed with a non-religious Muslim family abroad, who had this rule, and we liked it so much, we adopted it when we came back. Slippers or sandals that aren't used outside are OK

Same here! If it’s in the loft then we probably don’t need it! We do have one suitcase up there as my other two take up the space on top of my wardrobe but that’s it. I just hate the thought of having stuff up there!

I'm 42 and still have crap in my parents' loft that I didn't take when I permanently moved out at 25 because the flat i bought didn't have much storage 😁

I can see that happening with my own young adult dcs 😁😁

Some of these are not that weird at all, just very sensible. I have many complicated cup/mug rules depending on the drink and type of said drink. Tea (without milk) china cup and saucer, tea with milk ( builders tea) in a big fat mug but not a normal mug ( see later) . Coffee in a small dainty mug, even smaller if expresso. Half size if flat white, obviously. Mugs need to be a certain pleasing shape to be allowed cupboard space, hate the bog standard straight up/straight down type. Sometimes I will refuse a beverage if rules are not followed…well, just pretend it’s accidentally gone cold so I don’t look too bat shit.

I'm the same about the loft, mainly because it's impossible to get into unless you are a slim gymnast. There is stuff there but I don't add to it!
I don't have any rules but if I dared, it would be,Bring your own washing and dirty cups downstairs, I have enough of my own!

Timeforatincture · Yesterday 18:47

Heard this one on the radio, and we liked it so much we adopted it.

Right of Cattage

If there is a cat on your lap you are exempt from any household task, pouring drinks etc. Good rule.

All meals are eaten in the dining-room at a properly set table. That means with a table cloth, table napkins, placemats, glasses and the family silver. Obviously extras for special occasions & dinner parties..
No exceptions.
First plate is dished up for you, if you want a second helping, go to the kitchen and help yourself. Applies to everyone, including guests.
Nobody seems to mind or be disturbed.

Kayleighfish · Yesterday 18:48

I don't feel settled/safe unless there's a cross of some description in each room.

Yep, everyone else thinks I'm crackers too!

I don’t like anyone moving the cushions on our sofa when they sit on it. But I move them. I put them back though. No one else does. If I get home and we have a visitor and they have parked in my space I will call them from the car and make them move(we have room to park dozens of cars but my spot is only for me 👀 on you SIL)
no one is allowed to sit on my seat on the sofa.
we all have our own particular preference for seating 🤣🤣
we never turn on the big light.
I hate the big light.
no food left anywhere that doesn’t have a door. The Labrador is a pig and will steal it.
no dogs on the furniture.
no money lying around - the Jack Russel has a taste for paper money.
I’m sure there are more but I can’t think of them now!

No monopoly or Baileys. The last one is only me not allowed it

There’s a story I feel here

Why should any mother have to feed baby in the toilet? Who wants to eat their dinner in a toilet?

Many many decades ago women didn't breast feed in public, especially in the North of Scotland.

Love a tablecloth. Proper napkins is next level

  1. Crisp tax (including Frazzles). Any child eating crisps has to offer me one.
  2. No teeth in mugs. Child 2 bought me a lovely big one with sending you love in a mug written on it. My Dad stayed over and decided that was the best place to keep his false teeth. Almost took a mouthful without realising as l usually leave it out for my morning water. Despite cleaning and sterilising l cannot bear to use it anymore.😖 We now call it the 'sending you teeth" in a mug.
  3. Never run out of teabags, toilet rolls or chocolate.

Ooo and empty loft how lovely. Ours has got out of hand and both myself and DH are quite sentimental. I think not ever starting that caper ( apart from cases, Christmas decorations and camping stuff) is the way to go.

SanFairyAnnie · Yesterday 18:58

I would extend the cattage one. If cat is asleep on your lap you may request cups of coffee-preferably in cat picture mugs until the cat wakes up-or you need the loo.

Secretsquirrelshh · Yesterday 19:01

We are absolutely not allowed to stand naked on the stairs with a pair of socks tucked between our arse cheeks, shouting, "Mummy l'm a squirrel!"

This one might be specific to my DDs.

Second the sit down dining too, even the teenagers in this house appreciate the space to slow down, enjoy the food and connection it provides.

But I just cannot stand food being plated for me - my (otherwise absolutely lovely) in-laws do that and it drives me up the wall. I’m a grown woman of certain age and can decide for myself how much I want to eat and what. Often it’s very different plate composition than my husbands’, or what my DS17 needs. I feel like 1950s if someone else is making choices for me about what I should eat…

I don't have a dryer, so it always takes more than one day. But I also like the enforced 'break' from my desk it gives me; I sit down too much for work!

Fair enough
I have a heat pump TD, its amazing, cheap to run and super gentle
I hang out then finish off in the TD
Fold and away
I gave a real thing about laundry hanging everywhere

Cucumbersandwich75 · Yesterday 19:11

Why didn’t I think of that? I have one for the council and use a bowl or saucepan for scraps for the compost heap.
I will buy another for the compost heap. Thank you for that.

XmasCrackPies · Yesterday 19:13

Never, ever close a door in someone's face or lean on a door frame. My cousin did it to me when I was about 8 and my finger tips got squashed in the hinges. I've had a phobia about it ever since.

Dogs not allowed on furniture. I love them, will kiss and hug them, but can't stand them on the couch or in my bed.

I wake up an hour early to have a coffee in peace. Do not disturb me during this time unless there's blood or somebody stopped breathing.

Ignore the huge dog who wanders round crying.
He is fine.
Fussing over him makes it worse.
He is fine.

We also have this, but I do have to threaten to get my nipples out when my son forgets. That does the trick.

We need this. My teenage son is delighted with his new muscle bound body but honestly I don’t need to see it - especially at tea.
