Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

Yep, sorry sofasmurfing, you are as mad as a box of frogs...;))

Ilovefluffyblankets · Yesterday 17:56

If you are like me and fill any given space, then keeping the loft clear is a very good idea.

Ilovefluffyblankets · Yesterday 17:58

Me too! Bailey’s has never needed storage space in my home 😂

My loft is an actual room with a staircase up to it, so damn right I'm going to put things in there! Otherwise it's just an unused room in my house, which is so tiny that the dog has to go outside to turn round and I'm not wasting space!

Shoes can stay on, I've got tiled floors, so if people want to take their shoes off they need to bring slippers, because they'll freeze otherwise.

I think the only rule I have (but I live alone with the dog) is that the dog is not allowed upstairs during the day. I have a staircase behind a door, so the door must stay shut, otherwise she'll sneak up there and make a nest on my bed by ratching up all the covers and that is NOT what I want to be faced with when I stagger upstairs ready to collapse.

I hate shouting around the house, so my rule is if you can’t see someone’s face then you don’t speak to them.
my partner hates it and thinks it’s nuts.

We have tea mugs and coffee mugs and you must NEVER make coffee in a tea mug or vice versa.

Neverknowinglyunderfaffed · Yesterday 18:02

If you are waking me up, it's because
1 - you've brought me a cup of tea
2 - it's snowed outside
3 - someone has died

No summoning demons, no ouiji boards, no witchy stuff or ghost hunting stuff. I'm very sure our house is haunted, but would prefer vague denial over absolute proof!! Lol Yes, I'm sensitive to this kind of thing, had too many experiences not to be, but I'm private rented & can't afford to move, so denial it is!!! Yes, my kids believe too, tho nothing concrete has happened to them. They're both late teens now, so it's practically our only rule

  • Hard work pays for joy: Life is meant to be enjoyed, but you have to earn that enjoyment through good, hard work—a price that is never marked down.
  • Do your best and clean up: You can work at whatever you want, provided you do it well, clean up afterward, and make it to mealtime and bed on time.
  • Respect what others do: Respect everyone else's pursuits (such as Dad’s harp, Mom’s paints, Billy’s piano, Alex’s tools, Jimmy’s designs, and Minnie’s menagerie).
  • Out with grievances: If something makes you sore, speak up—the rest of the family might be itching for a fight, too.
  • Out with humor: If something strikes you as funny, share it so everyone can have a laugh.
  • Take chances: If you have an impulse to do something and you are unsure, take a chance; otherwise, you will likely regret it (unless it breaks the meal or bedtime rules).
  • Choose fun: If you have to pick between what is "good for you" and what is fun, and nobody gets hurt, always choose fun.
  • Stand on your head: If the world feels like it is against you or things get too heavy, go stand on your head (or do something equally crazier).
These are the house rules that Harpo,Marx had, it's hard to see how they'd be bettered.

Our stairs are also behind a door. The dog is only allowed upstairs once in a blue moon, to visit a human who is sick in bed. I think he understands that it's special circumstances. And he hasn't learned how to open the door. Yet.

As someone who has recently cleared a loft during a house clearance, I say THANK YOU.

lofts are junk graveyards designed to sap the very existence out of any poor bugger who has to clear them. And it’s rarely the owner.

I filled a 6 yard skip and it was both frustrating and heartbreaking.

do not store shit in your lofts people

Ours is full of rubbish. I expressed concern about having to clear it if my DH dies and my son said he will clear it and keep the money for whatever he sells. Job done! He'll be sadly disappointed if he's hoping to find valuable treasure in there.

Mine is allowed up at night - she sleeps on the landing outside my bedroom. But if you give her an inch...

Where do your Christmas decs and suitcases go?

My (possibly weird to some) rule when our kids were small was sit down wees only. Sadly, I’d be a bit odd if I asked guests to do it, but judging by the pissy splashes visiting men leave, I’d love to.

I so anti central ceiling lights, I made my husband remove every single one when we moved in. Also, no curtains that can be drawn. Hate the look of drawn curtains.

A sign behind the toilet works wonders for the men, bought one from Amazon.

'If you sprinkle when you tinkle
Please be sweet and wipe the seat'

We don’t have anything stored in our loft 🤷‍♀️

ETA - when we had cats, they weren’t allowed upstairs. I don’t think they realised there was an upstairs.

Carpedimum · Yesterday 18:15

No football mugs to be used on match days. For some reason they think it negatively influences the result.

Big light in the living room only used in emergencies.

Preach 🙌

FieldofMusic · Yesterday 18:18

The no music one is tragic, we play music all the time, couldn't live without it.

Some of these are pure batshit and so joyless and confining that I feel pity for the people and animals forced to live with you.

When DP moved in with me my rule was dinner was always eaten at the kitchen table together if we were eating tea together.

he grew up in a house that no one ate together. When he got to be a teenager he had to make his own dinner. Sitting down to eat was only done as a family. He also didn’t eat out lots.

we met when both early 40s. He was married before but somehow managed to meet someone who never ate as a family.

Food is a social thing to me and I like to eat out. Now he will eat a take away at the table instead of a Saturday night sofa slump. Once I found him drunk after a night out eating his kebab at the table. He says he loves our chats over food.

This is so sweet.

Cherryicecreamx · Yesterday 18:21

Gosh my loft is my only storage space I don't feel I have much choice 😭

I think I've just started a weird rule to get dressed before we come down for breakfast. I have just found the day can drift in pyjamas and it's nice to feel ready for the day. Although I'm sure there will be days where I feel more relaxed about this.. perhaps it's more of a guidance than a rule!

Anjo2011 · Yesterday 18:25

Nothing to be stored on the shower floor/around the sides it needs to be taken out of the shower when you’ve used it. Saves a slimy floor.

ilikemethewayiam · Yesterday 18:27

No pooing in the downstairs loo next to the front door! There are plenty other toilets in the house!

BMW58 · Yesterday 18:28

My house is mid terrace Victorian and I had the loft emptied, boarded and a new loft ladder installed last year.

There was loads of old rolls of carpet up there (not ours so God knows how long it had been there) and it was obvious that rats had made use of the carpet as accommodation.

I will be keeping the loft absolutely empty henceforth to discourage the buggers. Every couple of months I squirt rat repellent around up there.

CptnJaneway420 · Yesterday 18:32

Man, can I live with you? I've read your other "weird" rules and they seem self explanatory AND excellent rules. I can just tell your house is organised properly. I live in a hovel of other people's filth. Its actually my house. How do you make them do the things the way you want? The opening and decanting - the opening/fruit prep THEN bin THEN you may eat? Do you just tell them to stfu and do it or have no God damned fruit? Your DH? Does he ever call you a whine or nag and/or purposefully puts something in the attic to piss you off? Leaves banana peel in middle of dining table...
When I lived with a man I had a no talking in the morning rule. It went even better when I upgraded to a no men live in my house rule.

Bernardo1 · Yesterday 18:32

No scrolling Munsnet during dinner, or sex.

Yep. For ages I had same policy as OP - if you’re going to store it in the loft you might as well not have it. But more recently (and since having a child), space became a premium. In order to make my loft useable I had to get people in to clear it… stuff people before me had left, heaven knows when.
