Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

seats are for bums not feets

all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not

don't make tea in my cup

So you can’t curl up on the sofa!

Where do your Christmas decs and suitcases go?

My (possibly weird to some) rule when our kids were small was sit down wees only. Sadly, I’d be a bit odd if I asked guests to do it, but judging by the pissy splashes visiting men leave, I’d love to.

I so anti central ceiling lights, I made my husband remove every single one when we moved in. Also, no curtains that can be drawn. Hate the look of drawn curtains.

Even bedroom curtains? And everyone can see in!

Don’t put it down, put it away.

This one is definitely only me, but I always say, “bye, I love you, you be good” to the cat when I leave the house or if I am last to bed.

I say this to the dog. Also sometimes "I won't be long".

I'm now widowed, but I have this very odd "rule" I never use two major appliances together (washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher) This goes back to when we lived in the aforementioned cottage; the electrics were a bit sensitive, and if I ran more than one at the same time it tripped the breaker switch.

Oh @plantladeeee please tell me what an illegal bowl that won’t die is. I’m guessing there might be a typo but I’m so intrigued and can’t work it out.

My rule is pictures on walls and photos on surfaces.

"won't fit" maybe?

No eating toast in bed. DH manages to get crumbs everywhere.

No kebabs in the house, I can't stand the smell and it lingers for days.

Only one load of laundry can be in progress at one time. The previous load must be completely dry and put away before a new one can be started.

No new storage. If something doesn’t fit into the storage we already have then you need to get rid of something else.

why this with the laundry?

I absolutely hate shoes being worn in the house. I do honestly think sometimes OH & DD put their shoes on specially to walk on the carpets. We put our shoes on to go out then one of them will remember something they need from upstairs or the front room & walk their shoes on the carpet. It drives me insane

I also have a weird thing about only having 1 cooked meal a day. If I have a sandwich for lunch I'll have a cooked dinner & vice versa. Dd1 recently asked me if her memory was correct in thinking I made her a snacky tea if she'd had cooked lunch at school. When I confirmed that she was right she looked so outraged I almost thought she was going to ring the NSPCC!

Oh Christ, my DP does this. I've asked him several times why we pay good money for a cleaner if he's going to traipse around in outdoor shoes. He never has an answer.

We don’t store anything in our loft either.
But that’s because we live in Australia where we have pythons in our roof.

wow that'd solve the squirrel problem!

Nobody packs their case on an unmade bed
crisps or nuts or frazzles have to go in a bowl

crisps or nuts or frazzles have to go in a bowl
a) as in, you can't eat them out of the packet?
b) frazzles ARE crisps

No devices in bedrooms overnight - although not so weird

if you are doing that (your choice) please have a corollary of no charging stuff overnight.

Hand towel straight into laundry basket after poo hands.

wouldn't a better rule be proper handwashing?

I know I probably sound nitpicky but it doesn’t it depend on the meals? We always have a cooked lunch and dinner but it’s healthy and filled with veg, which seems better to me than a cheese sandwich, crisps and banana!

I think this too.

Bananas must be fully peeled and the skin discarded in the bin before eating commences.
Equally, apples must be segmented and the core disposed of first.

why??????????

You're so lucky! Years ago I worked in insurance and a squirrel got into someone's house while they were on holiday. The damage she came home to after 2 weeks away was horrendous and the poor woman wasn't insured because squirrels count as vermin which isn't covered (it's all a con!). Anyway off topic, but thank goodness you got it sorted!

oh! I didn't know about the vermin exclusion and must check my insurance!!!

But what's the use of having a loft then?

it supports the pointy roof which allows the rain to run off, its also excellent insulation.

FatLarrysBanned · 06/10/2026 20:09

Ribena is banned. When she was 4 DD spilled a whole bottle on cream floor tiles/units. She's 16 now and it's still banned.

If you're making a drink/snack for yourself you ask if anyone else wants one.

No one leaves the house without a kiss from me. Like leaving to go to school/work, not just putting the bins out. Only applies to family not workmen or anything like that. I'm not that weird.

Insisting on kisses from hot workmen is mandatory 😂👍

What a waste of space.

why if (like me) its a struggle to get up there?

Gettingbysomehow · Yesterday 12:53

Another one for nothing in the loft.
Anything up there attracts mice and rats who nest in boxes and containers and chew up everything.
I've decided if it's been in the loft for years I don't need it. I don't celebrate xmas so there are no decorations up there.

I get this because if you eat them out of a bowl you don't get a mucky palm or back of the hand by fishing into the packet. Its not a house rule but I prefer to decant snacks

Yeah, I don’t really want to think about how that one came about…

The last person that breast fed a baby in my house was me more than 3 decades ago. And no i never once fed at the table. Only once did i feed at a cafe table and that was because they only had one toilet.

Why should any mother have to feed baby in the toilet? Who wants to eat their dinner in a toilet?

Fromagedream · Yesterday 14:32

Snuppeline · 06/10/2026 20:18

No glitter in the house. None of that bastard stuff shall pass my threshold!

I don’t care that your a greedy so and so but if you take the last of something you throw the evidence (the now empty bag, box or whatever). It is evil to allow others to live in the belief there is biscuits in the house when in fact there are none!

Also, when you take the last of something put it on the shopping list. I don’t appreciate having planned pasta with pesto only to find the teenagers had the pesto to make fancy deli sandwiches. The sandwiches are fine, the messing with my logistics are not. Just tell meeeeee!

I had a school friend and his fridge would have such random things in, such as a tiny cube of cheese, or a bag with three grapes or a scrape of butter. His mum had a rule where no one could finish an item.

I don’t think we have any weird rules. We threatened and used a weird punishment a few times though - if one of the kids were naughty, they had to sit next to our youngest who was weaning at dinner.

ALJT · Yesterday 14:39

So where do you keep your Christmas decs etc? I couldn’t be without my loft. We keep all sorts in there. I swap my clothes out summer for winter and vice versa so store them up there, Xmas Decs etc.
