A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

it did have that feel / let’s play ‘all together now’ say hope a lot. I do much prefer his style, I’m interested in care reform, I just wonder what we’re doing for the next three years.

Pretendbafta · 29/09/2026 16:01

EasternStandard · 29/09/2026 15:57

It doesn’t sound like much was missed then.

yes but that in itself is surely relevant

Binnyforthewin · 29/09/2026 16:01

The triple lock removal to fund care makes no sense. The pensions won't go down just the increase will be less. Not giving an increase to doesn't suddenly create money to spend elsewhere - it is the "I'll be able to go on a cruise next year if I don't buy a Ferrari" argument.

To be fair - if the increases are less, that does mean that pensions will cost massively less. And quickly

Theblueyonder · 29/09/2026 16:03

Good vibes will not survive first contact with reality.

Reality in the shape of inflation, and those in the WH and the Kremlin, and a lack of growth, and the small boats, and defence, and welfare etc.

Personal crusades are all well and good, but Burnham has more pressing issues.

Agree it makes a saving versus todays plan but it doesn't generate any more cash. We don't have the cash to pay for the increases anyway.

Think of it like….

You leased a car and the payments were going to increase in line whichever was highest x rate or y rate.

then the contract changed so it would be the lowest of x and y rate

you Would have extra money in your pocket that you otherwise wouldn’t have done

But yes it will!! It literally generates spare cash that was otherwise marked.

Not if you were living beyond your means on credit anyway. You'd still be living beyond your means on credit.

The difference is we are using a credit card to fund the lease payments. You might have less debt you don't have more money.

Yep but given the money was marked now that it’s no longer marked - it can be channeled elsewhere

it is not ideal
but it makes sense

It doesn't. The main argue for ending the triple lock is that it is unaffordable. Double lock + care will still be unaffordable.

No, the money cannot be channelled elsewhere, as it is money the government do not have, it is borrowed money, not savings.

Or, given that you spend way more than you earn, you could be prudent about lowering your debts and not splash out on a new car/social care.

I don’t think we can compare a car with social care 😆

anyway I’m not really bothered to be honest. I am very much of the view that as long as me and my nearest and dearest are happy health and doing ok financially - nothing else particularly concerns me

So I’ll leave you to debate

You were the one who introduced the car analogy.

If I had excess cash, I would go straight out and look for a black lab pup.

I predict a boom for them.

Edit: presumably there are trainers who keep them from becoming far right at an early age?

Burnham is going to be pretty annoyed that the headlines are all about how black Labradors and country pubs are a seen as a far right fiction by Labour.

Yes, true.

I hope Blunkett was at the conference.

Binnyforthewin · 29/09/2026 16:21

Loving hearing Phillipson challenged by an interviewer on how yesterday she told him she completely against removing the triple lock and today she thinks it is absolutely a good idea. So much squirming.

Neverstopwondering · 29/09/2026 16:22

Thank you for new thread and Wonderful dog in pub picture
