A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

In absolute honesty the best thing that could happen to the NHS is not more money, but for someone to go in and sort out their systems and management processes. That’s where it’s wasted.

Oh sure. It’s the decades of cynical Labour propaganda that’s raised the NHS to quasi-religious status that is the problem. We all have to give ever more tithes when demanded by the NHS High Priests.

The reality is that as an organisation it’s an industry like any other. It needs proper management and cost control. It doesn’t need to be endlessly hosed with cash.

I don’t know what kind of information people want about Sagal Abdi Wali but my understanding is she was a local housing officer in her 20s, before she went into politics. I saw an interview somewhere.

Well someone dug into council attendances, apparently she attended one meeting in a six month period. No idea why, could have been illness, maternity leave. Her bio doesn't mention a partner or children.

Today’s Times front page headline is about Treasury refusal of money for the NHS (I haven’t read the story).

Waiting lists for elective surgery have gone up two months in a row. A senior NHS official said a few days ago that there are early signs of major winter stress in hospital admissions.

And we heard claim after claim after claim from Labour about how tax hikes would ‘save our NHS’ and how public services would be so much better.

It’s almost as if the government has no idea what it’s doing, that the promises were bullshit, that it can’t control welfare spending, and that its tax policy has crippled business and not benefited anyone. Surely not.

In Wales elective surgery to even be on the list is the holy grail. Winter pressure, you get booted off. Norovirus on wards booted, flu, booted, RSV, booted. You getting it?

In theory, I’d like to do that job

In practice, there would be so many redundancies to make…

I really dislike the term “elective” as I genuinely think people misunderstand it. It shouldn’t be used.

in other news, you know I’ve said I was in a really good mood and something bad was bound to happen? It has. (I’m not sure if it counts as really bad to other people). I’m just trying to be resilient about it.

Enjoy your good moods while you have them!

Thank you

I should probably say it’s not related to health so that’s probably the most important thing.

This!

Exactly. It's no good throwing more money at top heavy management roles. The incompetence starts at the top. I'd hate to have to work in such a shambolic bureaucratic system, where there's so many layers of unnecessary and duplicate management. A lot of the public sector is like this.

I know a partner at a UK based company that have worked with huge companies in many areas around the world that did go into an English health board hospital for a month analysed every department, spoke to employees. Produced a report. Were thanked paid and the recommendations buried.

justasking111 · 10/10/2026 16:48

Sorry @SapphireCasino that the other shoe dropped.

Nuthatch26 · 10/10/2026 19:04

@SapphireCasino Sorry to hear that. Whatever it is, I hope its sorted out soon. 🫂

Some good stuff in today's Times. This is a good summary of what we're facing over winter, despite Burnham's sound bites. The reality is very different to what he wishes it to be.

Now I was reading that over £4 billion pounds was pulled out of pensions because of Reeves scaring people with a tax on the 25% drawdown. But they haven't gone mad with it. What a lot of them are doing is helping out their adult children and grandchildren because of the sabre rattling re inheritance tax maybe being 40% .

For some people, that push to give early will end up a positive thing. People can find it hard to spend down their carefully saved pension, and often end up under-spending.

But many people have put themselves in a far worse financial situation for the future. Many now have that money in interest accounts rather than invested.

The ftse100 has grown 10% in the last year (since this happened), the S&P500 is up 16% and the Nasdaq a whopping 25%. Even the best interest account is only 5%.

That difference compounds pretty quickly.

Labour have caused so much thoughtless damage to the UK people - and this is a not-insignifucant example.

Good morning 😁

Rishi's column on small boats and Rwanda is good in The Times. Sick of hearing Labour's claim that THEY have reduced crossings when they are down across Europe. Over 1700 in the first week of October, and Labour think they've cracked it.

It really is ridiculous.

Nuthatch26 · 11/10/2026 09:22

The party who tried to force digital ID on us are now trying to reduce ID needed to vote. Bank card with only initials will suffice.
Andy Burnham is rushing through laws to scrap photo ID checks in polling stations amid mounting speculation he will call an early general election, The Telegraph can reveal. The Prime Minister has been accused of “ramming through” the controversial changes, which mean people will be allowed to vote with only a bank card as identification.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/44ef2f33835d64dc

Not good at all. It just looks so cynical.

What about postal voting, I have heard it is a much bigger problem.

EasternStandard · 11/10/2026 09:44

Burnham will use anything to stay in. He’ll be going for a left coalition.

SapphireCasino · 11/10/2026 09:45

Why would they want to scrap the ID checks? That’s oddly sinister.

In terms of postal voting, my mum has a postal vote because with her health she never knows if she’ll be well enough to get down to the polling station on the day

I suppose if we automatically offered it to anyone over 80 it would be considered age discrimination or something. It’s really difficult. I can absolutely see what the problem is.

Postal voting rules already work in left wing parties' favour, so no need to alter that.
It should be just for specific groups who genuinely can't vote at a polling station.

I agree that people with mobility issues should not be disenfranchised. I am not sure what needs to be done, but I hear it is abused in pockets of the country.

We need to have stricter rules on who can vote by post. Its being abused by certain demographics.
Your mum should obviously qualify as she is elderly, as should those with proven mobility issues.

For the past few elections, allegations have emerged in my constituency and the constituency that I grew up in.
Community leaders filling in large numbers of voting forms for others at community centres. Heads of families filling in postal votes on other's behalf etc. (Choosing my words carefully iykwim).
Labour run areas just don't care so dismiss it.

Postal voting in Ireland is only allowed in certain circumstances. Ireland also are not adopting this reduction to bank card ID.

Anyone who has observed any of the recent NHS tribunals, e.g. Darlington nurses and Sandie Peggie, will have seen first hand the staggering incompetence of many of those in NHS 'management'.

A whole row of them sitting there for weeks 'observing', some as witnesses exhibiting their incompetence every time they open their mouths, and a culture thats seems to involve going to many many meetings yet never making decisions or actually improving anything for patients and staff.

Christened the 'lanyard class' by someone, can't recall who.
They can't be doing anything useful if they are able to have jolly days out at tribunals with no detriment to the NHS (they also seem to go off sick quite a lot too according to some of their evidence).

I would put them all on the B Ark.
