I realised today several people in my team don't know how many inches are in a foot.

Telling my friend's teen that when I was her age and fancied a boy, my only chances of catching a glimpse of him usually were bumping into him at mass, and poring over the local newspaper as there sometimes would be a picture of him in it as he played minor's football and also played in the scout band. How archaic!

Saying that I feel like I'm in the Krpten Factor if I have to do something difficult or complicated. Blank stares.

Recently at the school gates another mum (a lot younger than me) made some complaint about it always raining on her, I said "That's because you lied when you were seventeen" and she just looked at me, puzzled...

One time (and this is years ago now, maybe 15 years ago), a young student of mine was looking in a confused way at the pink vinyl 12 inch record on the turntable on the top of my hi fi... then he said to me "Why's that CD really big?" ... I suddenly felt really old.(Of course even since then, CDs are out of date too!)

Recently my sister's car broke down in a really awkward place that was a bit of a hazard so we had to inform the police. Two policemen came out to us. I was thinking, holy shit these two both look about 12 years old... man I am old!

My DD’s are 19 and 22 and they have never watched it, I think they’ve heard of it but they don’t know much more than that.

I did that a few years ago. £21.50 to the young barman for a couple of drinks that I knew would be £6.50. He looked at me, looked at the money, looked at me, who by the way was quite pissed and probably was a similar age to his mother, looked at the money and eventually typed £21.50 into his till which to his surprise told him to give me exactly £15 in change which earned me a gasp and a shocked and confused look.

At his age I was working in Greggs, and adding up all the prices and working out change in my head because we had a manual till that only accepted the total price.

We were talking about a notable event that happened at our work 20 years ago last week and I realised that my youngest graduate trainee colleagues were mostly pre-schoolers or primary age at the time. Also that people born this century are adults with degrees, jobs and driving licences.

today i was sent a fb reel pointing out that 1972 and 2026 are as far apart as 1972 and 1918😢

A colleague and I did some training at work for 20-something adults in a city I’m unfamiliar with. We asked for restaurant recommendations at the end. Someone recommended somewhere and said “I think you’ll like it. My mum really likes going there”. And then we realised how old we look to them.

That is just terrible!

There is a Netflix documentary called generation 9/11, and during the program it said something like within the next few years more than 50% of Americans would not have been born or were not old enough to have any recollection of 9/11. That really made me feel ancient (and I’m early 40s!)

Great thread - I’ve got too many to list but a memorable one was ‘What’s Liveaid?’ from a friend in her late forties.

I got an ad on my phone for some cut price editions of Peoples Friend magazine and I seriously considered it.

My 21 year old son had never heard of Bob Geldof or Live Aid!! We were in a restaurant at tge time so I asked the slightly older waiter if he’d heard of it. Again blank stare but then said he was Polish so that was why. I said it was actually a global thing but still no knowledge. The 50 somethings at the next table looked incredulous at their lack of knowledge especially as there were the 40th celebrations last year.

My son’s excuse is that he wasn’t born. I say that argument doesn’t wash. I’ve heard of World War 1 & 2 but I wasn’t alive through either!!

Reminds me of when I told my DCs (when they were still quite young) that the Xmas advent calendars I had in my childhood just had pictures in, no chocolates or gifts. They went really quiet and then one eventually said: ‘Well what was the point?’ They really didn’t buy my account that it was actually really exciting each day to see what the picture was and then to get to school and tell your friends what your picture was and ask them what theirs was 😂

Ps His 25 year old brother had heard of Live Aid but he’s a bit if a geek about the 80s! Plus both of them have watched ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ which features Live Aid.

Thinking of when I was young in the 1980s. So that was 40 years ago. I still listen to 80s music. That’s the equivalent gap to people then listening to 1940s music! Vera Lynne and all that.

My niece once asked me if I'd ever travelled to work in a horse and carriage! 😂

The generation gap first hit me about 17 years ago when I was doing up a community centre that was very popular with students and I said my mock up was a bit "why don't you" and one said why don't I what? What do I do?
They had no idea what the TV programme was and it finished the year before they were born.

In the last 5 years talking about starting work in my first office role. The office was next to the Manchester GMEX and it was during the commonwealth games and my cousin was competing in Judo. Newish man on my team said "Oh I was at that. Well I was a baby and my mum went with me in my pram.

I was interviewed for a history project by my son aged 13, a "history" project. Where was I and what was I doing when 9/11 happened? My son followed up with "Well it was decades ago Mum" 🤦🏼‍♀️

I like vintage clothes, which for me means maybe 1950s styles.

Shopping on Vinted a few weeks ago, I was horrified to see 'Y2K vintage'. I still have clothes in my wardrobe from the year 2000. And I still wear them, at least the ones that still fit.
