I felt this burn when I was chatting to a newly just turned 20 year old in work with my other colleague whos the same age about the liquid metal dude in the terminator 2 movie when she said " i have no idea who you mean' me in my older state of mind genuinely thought she was joking and said you know the one who gets frozen by liquid nitrogen and shatters everywhere. She looked at me like I was talking gibberish and then my friend said dont forget she was born in 2006. It was at that moment when I realised..well shit im cracking on abit.

To be fair Pete Tong is still on Radio 1 so he’s contemporary

Seeing Spice Girls photos that I used to collect as a child sold for £1 each in the vintage shop near my work 😂

When I see an advertisement for our local Senior Citizens luncheon club stating "Over 55s only"

Don't worry, a senior citizen is usually someone of state retirement age or over, so at least 67. They're just opening it to the over 55s in order to get more people. We are YOUNG!

My kids utterly flummoxed for years by their grandmother always using the phrase - I need to spend a penny- when she wanted the loo.

mamaandbabas · 04/10/2026 00:30

Young person in work had no clue who Mrs Doubtfire was or had seen the film 😫

So many on here I relate to. Had the same “Duran Duran” moment recently. Last Christmas and Band Aid being over 40 years old now. Same for films like Top Gun and Dirty Dancing. The realisation that my raving days were over 30 years ago. Getting on well with my neighbours kids, who are early 20’s and, in my head, thinking I’m only a few years older than them. Then a song comes on and they explain “oh mum played this in the car on the way to school” and realising I was almost at the point of getting my first mortgage 😂. And another in their early twenties, who’s parents were from another country that’s seen a lot of changes over the years - came up in passing that I’d travelled round there and he really wanted to hear about it, didn’t seem that long ago to me, but it was sobering to realise that he wasn’t even born when I went there. The most frequent reminder is the bloody scrolling to find your year of birth when registering an account somewhere, it’s depressing having to scroll so far back.

I do try to look on the bright side too. Firstly, that I’m still here - sadly, others aren’t, so it’s a privilege to get thus far. Then, stuff like some of the younger ones wanting to hear about seeing gigs at the old Wembley stadium, or finding anecdotes interesting about life before email, mobiles, SM, etc. I’m Gen X and I honestly think we’ve had the best of both worlds. A childhood free from SM and all the pressure that comes with it, along with an easing into newer tech but not being daunted by it.

Need to rummage through some boxes, I think I’ve still got my singles of Last Christmas and Band Aid somewhere!

Txutxioyigx · 04/10/2026 08:23

I’ve got the Band Aid single and Last Christmas. Also, Paul McCartney and the frog chorus !

I was walking the dog a couple of months ago and I live in an area where there are lots of bars and restaurants. We were walking past this cool bar and there were a dussin people standing around and a speaker in front of them plus a few more men who were trying to perform a song but the speaker was clearly broken because there were just this god awful noise that came out. It was really loud too. A man who was around my age walked past me and was filming them. I’m thinking he was doing it so that he could complain. I smiled at him knowingly. Anyway, the noise stopped eventually and people started clapping and cheering. Turned out it was music.

Dussin?
do you mean dozen or something else?

When I see familiar items from childhood in antique ( sorry, vintage) shops.

musketeers123 · 04/10/2026 11:19

When I was 35 (a few years ago) at work, it came up in a conversation that I was a Veggie. The person next to me asked me for how long and I replied since I was 10. He looked at me and said "Wow, you have been a Veggie longer than I have been alive!". Still remember the silence that followed ....

Crikeyalmighty · 04/10/2026 11:32

Im 64 but have several friends who are early 40s and realised I was old when they stopped inviting me to raves or R&B nights -I’m firmly in the ‘nice for coffees and meals out’ group it seems - although in fairness they are probably correct

To be fair we still had desks with inkwells in my primary and secondary schools! Some of the classrooms had the more modern flat tables but they hadn't replaced them in all the rooms :)

No slates though, we had progressed beyond those.

Edited

In primary for a few years I had my own desk with a lift up lid and ink well. I loved that desk and was sad when we moved to shared flat desks.

spanglisher · 04/10/2026 15:04

Our elderly neighbours (late 80's) moved out recently and a young family moved in. They mentioned that the young daughters love gardening and would be more than happy to help us out with the weeding. At that point I realised that we had become the elderly neighbours that people want to look after.

Retiringrosie · 04/10/2026 16:29

when we moved to this cul de sac - I was the young mom with 3 boys - I am now the old widow who neighbours come and put my bins out in case I have a fall! In my head I am still a young mom xx

I’m taking my 87 year old FIL to Stockholm with us for new year period and pre booking restaurants and I don’t care if it’s in the top 40 or not, if it has a remote feel of a clattery canteen we won’t be going - so unlike others perusing menus I’m busy looking at internal pics- I want tablecloths, nice subdued lighting , space and cosy decor!! A fair few parissiene style brasseries have been booked

I am at the stage when i am booking holidays i look at how the chairs in the rooms and communal areas are. The only downside to my favourite hotel is that the beds are so high so i know have to pack a collapsable footstool.

today i was sent a fb reel pointing out that 1972 and 2026 are as far apart as 1972 and 1918😢

This really shocked me😮 I had to double check on my calculator and it brought home the fact that I'm almost as old now as my dear Nan was when she took me to work with her as she cleaned our local cinema on a Saturday morning while my mum was busy working at the butchers (this meant I got to see the children's matinee every Saturday for free). Now I know for sure that I'm old, thanks @ERthree. 😂

Mumteedum · 04/10/2026 17:08

Oh god. Just now... collected DS. His friend's little sister shouted inside that someone's grandma was there. I'm 52 FFS. 😭😭

😮 My 50s/60s childhood was a lot nearer to, and had a lot more in common with my grandmothers’ than my grandchildren’s. We (grandmothers and I) had earth-closet toilets in the yard, tin baths on the back door, farthings, chilblains, brutal schooldays with rulers across knuckles, segregated playgrounds and inkwells (yes, I was ink monitor 😂). Times have certainly changed, and thank God for that, though every generation has its own challenges.

The first time I felt really old was when I was in my 50s and one of the boys kicking a ball around in the park warned the others to watch out for the old lady. I turned round looking for her…
