My school buried a time capsule on the playing fields. It was dug up about 5 years ago! 🪏

Oh another one. A hot dude came out and fixed my TV setup for me. He was lovely and I was concentrating on not flirting with him. And then he started going through the TV channels, and I asked him how it was going and he said ‘just checking whether you can get Talking Pictures, all the older people like that one’

😣

Groaning with horror at the thoughts of going out for a meal/meet up at night (retired now). Nope, shivers at the very idea.

The first time I was given a seat on the bus. I never thought of myself as old(er), but retained my composure and sense of humour and said to the charming young man " thanks, but I'll have to go and get my Botox done now". There was a lot of laughter, but none from me!

When the man at the tourist train in Granada (it takes you up the vertical hill to Alhambra, no way was I walking up that!), said, "Senora - you have a discount for your age, it is €3 off the price!" Okay...... thanks for broadcasting THAT!

When my brother (13 years younger) and I were on a jolly somewhere, a waiter asked him "what would your mother like to drink?" FGS I was sitting there and didn't know whether I was more annoyed that he thought I was DB's mother, or that he didn't ask me directly, doddery old fool that I must have looked to him. DB on the other hand must look like a teenager. Unfucking fair, sorry for swearing.

I was also recently offered a seat on a crowded bus for the first time ever. I wasn't sure whether to be charmed by the polite young man or horrified that I clearly looked ancient!

I also remember the first time I was asked not if I had children, but if I had grandchildren! As it happens I have neither.

I went to an event with a work colleague, age 22, and someone asked if he was my son. I was initially offended but then I realised at 43 I am old enough to have a 22 year old son.

My actual children are much younger.

NoodleHorses · 23/09/2026 22:45

I was asked who my favourite TV cartoon character was, when I was a kid. Just today actually. I said Velma. Blank looks everywhere.

A couple of years ago I was having my kitchen painted. I had bought one tin of paint but the painter said he thought we'd need more, so I went back to the hardware shop to get another tin. When I paid, I noticed the price was a bit higher than the first tin, even though they were identical. I asked the check out assistant if there was some discount and he said no.

When I got backed, I checked the receipts. Turns out I'd been given the 'seniors discount' for the first tin. Hence the lower price. I was a spring chicken of 55 at the time!

Just this week watching the 7Up documentaries again…that was all in my lifetime 🤣

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 23/09/2026 23:01

Being ushered on to the bus by young people already in the queue .
Their manners were impeccable to say the least.
But I'm only late 50s.

rolloverbeethoven · 23/09/2026 23:04

Mine was when a girl on work experience washed my hair at the hairdressers and I asked what she was studying for her history qualification. The events she was studying were happenings that I remember very clearly...

cornflakecrunchie · 23/09/2026 23:05

Went to the opticians and discovered I have both short and long sight now and need varifocals. Fucking depressing.

Even more depressing I need varifocals and another pair of glasses - mid distance for working on my laptop!!

urgentoctapus · 23/09/2026 23:35

We’re now as far from the 1980s as the 1980s were from World War II

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · 23/09/2026 23:46

Explaining to my daughter what a walkman was, how a videotape looked like and the remembering that before airdrop and flash usb drives we had floppy discs to save information. I am not even 40 yet and I felt like a dinosaur fossil

I went to the Bus Museum in Long Hanborough (top afternoon out) and there was the bus model I used to take to school enshrined as a museum piece.

I was in touch with a thalidomide survivor at work and the student on placement with me asked ‘what’s thalidomide?’

I said to a member of the senior leadership team at work that I was going to see the Bayeux Tapestry and he said ‘what’s that?’

To be fair I don't think any of use remembers the Bayeux Tapestry the first time around.

A memory just came up on my FB about when cars had chokes. Something I do remember on my 1st car a Fiesta.
On a trip for my 60th I got offered a seat on the bus by a couple in their twenties.
Nice introduction to my sixties not.

I think I’m having it right now whilst reading this thread and realising that my children are old enough to know what Live Aid was, who Kylie Minogue and Velma are (even if they weren’t born on 9/11).

A friend sent me a meme saying that Dirty Dancing came out in 1987 and was set in 1963.

If it was made today it would be set in 2002.

I’m still speaking to her… but only just. 😆

There was just no need for that 😭

Slightly different, but my 10 year old asked me if I used to sweep chimneys when I was little

I took dc several years ago to a history of the town we were in museum. It had a childhood section.

There were a lot of things from my childhood in the case- a little professor calculator, speak and spell, Simon says thing, Care bears etc.

Itsthewoluff · Yesterday 00:35

Someone asked me if I had grandchildren. Obviously I could theoretically have had them for a long time, but I’m only just getting over raising my own kids in my head.

whiteroseredrose · Yesterday 00:59

Was lamenting that I was struggling to remember some French, which I used to be good at. Then realised that I took my O Level 45 years ago.

This is going back a few years when ds was 7 (he's now 21 he asked me one morning for gel pens, I said I used to use those when I was in school, 'no you didn't you used feathers and ink' 😂

Every song that comes on the radio, and I sing along too, dc will ask 'how do you know this song?' Then I remember I knew it the first time aeound 😭

Went to one of the cafes by the uni campus in town. There was a group of kids there. I assumed they were waiting for their mum/dad after school.

Then they started loudly discussing who did/didn't have their minibus licence. Yikes.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · Yesterday 01:16

I wouldn't worry too much about the content of school history lessons. When I did GCSE history the syllabus went up to events just 5 years before I started the course.

Becoming a great aunt did make me feel somewhat ancient.
