When I walked into the kitchen at work and saw a 20-something colleague trying to painstakingly peel the foil lid from the milk bottle. He was all amazement when I demoed how you push the foil down. But as he explained, he'd never actually seen a milk bottle before...

I went to the Bus Museum in Long Hanborough (top afternoon out) and there was the bus model I used to take to school enshrined as a museum piece.

I was in touch with a thalidomide survivor at work and the student on placement with me asked ‘what’s thalidomide?’

I said to a member of the senior leadership team at work that I was going to see the Bayeux Tapestry and he said ‘what’s that?’

ZenNudist · 23/09/2026 20:53

Well I've been working 26 years and today a 22 year old started work so I must seem ancient.

Known all my uni mates 30 years.

Now have a 16yo.

I described a bunch of Reform councillors on a post as looking like they were the often weird families from ‘ask the family’ - and got lots of comments asking what was ‘ask the family’

I purposefully bought some ridiculously priced fancy grapes so DDs could experience grape seeds!

They don't realise how hard it was for us. 😂

Waitingfordoggo · 23/09/2026 20:55

Every time I’m buying something, saying ‘how much?!’ incredulously. I didn’t really expect that to start happening until I was in my 70s and I’m still (just) under 50. Mind you, maybe that’s a fairly universal experience since everything has actually become hugely expensive in a short space of time.

Not understanding technology and getting het up about it. I spent ages trying to forward a sound file on WhatsApp earlier but didn’t have the person as a contact on my phone so ended up setting up a group and having to invite her to it- all of this in front of the 20-something I was sending the message to- very embarrassing. I’m sure there was an easier way to do it (mind you, she didn’t seem to know either, so that made me feel a bit better).

I remember a conversation at work about our favourite James Bond. Somebody said Roger Moore, another asked who was that?!

Thank you! I've just had to google Ask the Family and now I feel young again!

When I was in a shop and I was thinking turn that music down. Yes I’ve officially turned into my Nan I don’t know about my Mum. 🤣

JoyousBlueRobin · 23/09/2026 21:00

Never been ill before and now diagnosed with a/f. Seen in clinic for the first time and lovely nurse was going through the usual (I assume), questions do I need help at home can i manage stairs etc. I just sat there thinking I was working until I retired 6 months ago in a management role, now I’m being treated like an old lady, then realised I’m nearly 70, so maybe I am 😂

Bumblenums · 23/09/2026 21:01

That PowerPoint presentations are now referred to as 'decks' - its taken me months to realise thats what the younger members of my work team are referring to 😂

MyKindHiker · 23/09/2026 21:04

The babysitter laughing at me because she realised I type on my phone with my forefingers. She said it's a sign of someone who is ancient.

Groaning with horror at the thoughts of going out for a meal/meet up at night (retired now). Nope, shivers at the very idea.

The first time I was given a seat on the bus. I never thought of myself as old(er), but retained my composure and sense of humour and said to the charming young man " thanks, but I'll have to go and get my Botox done now". There was a lot of laughter, but none from me!

When the man at the tourist train in Granada (it takes you up the vertical hill to Alhambra, no way was I walking up that!), said, "Senora - you have a discount for your age, it is €3 off the price!" Okay...... thanks for broadcasting THAT!

When my brother (13 years younger) and I were on a jolly somewhere, a waiter asked him "what would your mother like to drink?" FGS I was sitting there and didn't know whether I was more annoyed that he thought I was DB's mother, or that he didn't ask me directly, doddery old fool that I must have looked to him. DB on the other hand must look like a teenager. Unfucking fair, sorry for swearing.

Trying on new glasses frames aided by a very helpful assistant at the opticians.

I said, “Oh not those, they make me look like Dame Edna Everage!”

Absolute tumbleweed.

The other day, DS described someone as “really old” who’s younger than me.

There were lots of programmes recently for the anniversary of 9/11.

I realised that many of my colleagues were either not born when it happened or were so young at the time that they had no memory of it.

Oh yes, this!!

I mentioned the Falklands War to a young man at work, he had no idea what I was on about 😵‍💫

I then kept mentioning other notable happenings…nope.. nothing was ringing a bell for him. I finally got to 9/11 and he said “oh yeah, it happened before I was born though!

We also chatted about dating in my era (1980s) when boys called round for you, got taken home to meet your parents and also walked you home from dates. He thought it was bizarre. I was explaining that it was nice as the boy had to show they knew how to behave properly, especially when you took them to meet Mum and Dad.
Its not like that anymore apparently 🤷‍♀️

PrideanndPurrjudice · 23/09/2026 21:15

I started thinking about getting a nice tea towel or 2

Yes I couldn’t work that one out too when I was asked to submit a pitch deck relating to investment on a branch out of our business - been a long time since I needed to go down this route!

catzrulz · 23/09/2026 21:17

Deciding at 60 that contact lenses were a good idea.
Nope, my mother looked back at me in the magnifying mirror I use for make up due to my rubbish eyesight.
She was nearly 90 when she died, I honestly thought my skin was much less wrinkly than it is. Absolutely gutted.

AllHoityToity · 23/09/2026 21:17

I was at work in a school and a child asked me where the phone box was and I didn’t understand why she wanted a phone box. My brain was trying to work out who she could possibly need to phone and why/how she was going to do that from a phone box.

I became a Gran last week!

Congratulations. You will now be penniless but the smiles are worth it🌼

ChocolateCinderToffee · 23/09/2026 21:19

A colleague looked gobsmacked when I mentioned that I was born in 1961.

In my head, I'm still early 20s, you know.

PoppyPeaches · 23/09/2026 21:20

I’d dressed my blonde haired baby boy in a brown romper suit, and I told my much younger friend that my husband said he looked like a mini Barney Rubble … her response was who’s that???

babybythesea · 23/09/2026 21:21

Several.

A colleague said he felt old because he realised the children from the first class he taught have just left school. Mate, the kids I first taught have their own children going through school.

Also, conversations about music. When people say “this was a hit during my A’Levels” and I think oh help! This was a hit when my daughter was a toddler! And I wasn’t a young mum!
