When my niece first started questioning the existence of Father Christmas, and I realised that when I was the same age that she was at the time, I had already caught on to the fact that Father Christmas used the same wrapping paper as my family every year.

(At that point, she kind of knew he wasn't real but wanted him to be. At the same age, I was done with it but played along for a couple more years because my family didn't want to let it go).

That I remember when Glastonbury still had tickets left in the week leading up to the festival.

People had lighters at gigs instead of using the torch on their phone.

Smoking in the office, smoking seats eg on planes.

Seeing the old fashions on teenagers and realising that’s how I/we used to look.

Films I saw at the cinema when they first came out and realising how long ago that was.

On the tube yesterday there was this very tall skinny guy immaculately dressed in 60s hippy garb, flared jeans and an Afghan style coat and beard with blonde shaggy hair. This guy must have been in his 20s.

And I thought hang on. You almost certainly were born after 2000 why are you trying to look like someone that age from 60 years ago? Guys looking like that were a lot more common in say the 90s with a bit of the hippy revival but now? I belatedly thought he must have been in costume as an extra and he was travelling to or from some production or photo shoot. It would have been like a 20 something in the 1960s trying to look like an Edwardian (which I think was what the Teddy boys attempted?)

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/10/2026 13:25

There was a bit of an Edwardian revival in the 80s. Closer to the original than the Teddy version.

Lalgarh · 06/10/2026 13:29

That reminds me a bit of Laura Ashley and that whole Edwardian country garden series

This really shocked me😮 I had to double check on my calculator and it brought home the fact that I'm almost as old now as my dear Nan was when she took me to work with her as she cleaned our local cinema on a Saturday morning while my mum was busy working at the butchers (this meant I got to see the children's matinee every Saturday for free). Now I know for sure that I'm old, thanks @ERthree. 😂

I still refuse to belive it is true, i think we all have faulty calculators.

I was settling my bill with my osteopath when he said "that will be only £X, because of your age". I had not a clue what he was talking about!

Ouch! Due to being disabled I'm entitled to certain concessions. One of those is a discount on the airport flyer. I once checked my ticket and they'd given me a pensioner discount! They will sometimes put it down as under 22 / student

Going to see Queen at Wembley on the Magic Tour with Freddie Mercury in 1986, it was 40 years ago, they never toured with that line up again and Freddie has been dead 35 years.

grumpymacgrumpface · 06/10/2026 22:19

My manager is 13 years younger than me.

He’s 50!

Was that the one that had Status Quo, The Alarm and INXS on the same bill? I was at one of those shows, and made the mistake of going to the loo while Quo were on. The queues for the ladies were so long that "Rocking All Over The World" started while I was sat on the loo, and the walls shook from the resonance of all the synchronised foot stomping.

Saying "which was nice", from the Fast Show.

It was, they played Friday and Saturday at Wembley then added a final date at Knebworth on the Sunday. We were at the Saturday show where the huge tethered figure/person balloon lost its tethering and floated out of the stadium landing somewhere, one might assume, in Wembley. That would be a shock, those figures were HUGE!

ElizaToolittle · 07/10/2026 22:24

My boss is 21 years younger than me.

I do this too!!! Oh god am I old??

(As an aside we're going to see The Fast Show Live here in Dublin next year, can't wait but I'll be a year older than I even am now!!)

Yeah, I was at the same one, but had forgotten about the floating balloon man until you mentioned it

Oh yes, talking with client about seeing the original Jurassic Park in the cinema and client was not born yet.
Aaargh! Why are all these babies suddenly able to have jobs and cars? 😂
Just looked it up, first JP was released in 1993 😳

My poker straight hair went curly 2 years ago (started menopause) and I have no idea how to manage it - I keep saying Im one of the hair bear bunch and everyone looks at me blank!!!

My hair started going wavy in my late 20s. It was generally dead straight, with a few kinks (Oo-er missus*) here and there, but come menopause it was off to the races. I wouldn't mind so much, but it's really curly on one side and wavy on the other, and it has taken me 15 years (and counting) to learn how to style it. Some days I still just give up. I wish you good luck in your new life.
