My kids looking at universities. Which is ridiculous because it was only five minutes since I was there.

I was watching When Harry Met Sally with my teenage daughters. It was the scene where Billy Crystal is eating grapes and spitting the pips out of the car window. My daughter said "what is he doing?" I said he's spitting out the pips and she said, "What are the pips?" I thought blimey, she had only ever known seedless grapes.

Edited

I purposefully bought some ridiculously priced fancy grapes so DDs could experience grape seeds!

@Emptyandsad , my late DM wanted to replace her mincer a few years before she died, so I found her one on Ebay.... and after she died, it was one of the first things my cheffy DS wanted. Now refitting the kitchen of their first home, one of the non negotiables is a wider than usual kitchen counter to which he can clamp certain appliances. And yes, he has alternative electricals to mince, but they're too fierce!

I was laughed /sniggered at last week at work when I said a new start who was gorgeous should be in a k pop band.

Im still not sure what I said wrong.

CelticSilver · 23/09/2026 20:05

My son saying: 'You look young for your age, Mum.'
Me (50): 'Thank you, son!'
Son: 'Yes, you look like a 30 year old who's been through a war.'
Erm ...

My DD the other day asked me why grown ups say "hang up" the phone. She didn't understand where you'd possibly hang it up or why.

Had a guy in his 20s round recently to quote for some building work and I referred to the Yellow pages, he had absolutely no idea what I was on about.

It took me quite a while to realise that they were no longer produced. Same with telephone directories

Papyrophile · 23/09/2026 20:10

I kept the last Yellow Pages. Still use it. I have both London volumes, and a surprising number of companies still have the same numbers.

Emptyandsad · 23/09/2026 20:10

And, as I recounted on another thread recently, my daughter, when she was at primary school (many years ago) got a new teacher. I asked how old she was. 'Very' she replied 'probably 25' 😳

At a wildlife centre type place they had armadillos.
Ooh I said, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside!

Everyone looked at me in total horror and I realised I was the oldest person there by a good 20 years.

🤣 id have said just the same!

morgan56 · 23/09/2026 20:13

Haha, I remember the time a Gen X made the Worzal Gummidge comparison and I had no idea what he was talking about 😆

thislittlelife · 23/09/2026 20:13

I mentioned my primary aged kids, and my pupil (aged 15) looked shocked and asked how old I was. Turns out she thought I'd "left it a bit late" to have children and assumed I must have teenagers by now... I'm 37 😂

beeble347 · 23/09/2026 20:13

Went to a 90s/00s night aged 25 with my 27yo friend. Fresh Prince theme tune came on, we look at each other knowingly thinking everyone's going to go wild singing all the lyrics as usual.

Nope - few pockets of millennials around the venue singing along, but the DJ actually switched tracks so few people knew it. WHAT

Last month I saw a woman I used to go to school with, (she was a couple of years above me at school) and she had a little baby with her, and introduced him as her GREAT grandson! 😬

(She's 61/62, her daughter is 40, her granddaughter is 19 and the little great grandson is 1 year old in October.)

A woman who was 2 years above me at school is a GREAT GRANDMOTHER.

I'm only fecking 20! 😆 (And not even a grandmother yet!)

!

Laska2Meryls · 23/09/2026 20:18

I also have been known to say when making sunday dinner 'They peel it with their little knives...ha ha ha ' and my adult kids and grandchildren just look at me utterly perplexed. (Edit: Actually, I just looked it up and its metal knives! Maybe thats why!)

When I told DD that when I was her age there were no mobile phones. She asked how we managed and I tried to explain phone boxes to her. Her reply was "that's weird"😆

Similarly i was watching an old film with my son and there waa a scene with somone typing on a type writer he aaked how they deleted a mistake
I had to explain the concept of tippex with him he was mind blown.

Nurseposter123 · 23/09/2026 20:23

It started raining and I said to my husband 'oh this will be great for the garden'

I moved to a different bar with a friend as the music was 'too loud' haha.

I bought some paracetamol at a pharmacy and paid the student pharmacist in cash, the exact amount (it was a good excuse to get rid of some of my small change). It was £1.49, pound coin and a mix of 10/20/5/2/1p coins to make up the rest. I even handed it over by counting into her hand. She checked it and checked it again and looked at it in puzzlement. I asked if it was all there, she just said she wasn't used to handling coins and couldn't work out how to add it up. Bloody hell.

FamingolosForDays · 23/09/2026 20:29

I took my youngest DC to look round my old secondary school (where my eldest DC currently attends and he will likely follow) and my teachers who i thought were old when I attended 20 years ago, are now actually old 🤣 (although I say old, coming up to retirement age I suppose!). I mean the fact that my youngest is going to secondary is bad enough...

In other news, I was also recently discussing with mother which type of hand luggage would be most sensible. Strongly advised a rucksack as a handbag/tote bag "would put strain on one shoulder".
I'm only 35. She called me middle aged 🫠

Tallestone · 23/09/2026 20:33

When I went on a networking event and said some one looked like Georgie Michael blank look back .

Minidriverinmorewaysthan1 · 23/09/2026 20:39

It was my birthday recently. I realised I'm now the same age that Marty Mcfly's parents were in 1985. I always thought they were so old! Also, if Back to the Future was set today, Marty would be going back to 1996!

I paid someone in cash earlier this week. I found it a strange experience counting it out exactly!

I don't ever feel old actually but I was playing Headbands with a young person I work with & I picked Kylie Minogue for him. We got it down to Australian female singer, was an actress. It transpired he'd never heard of her,!

Oh say ‘Kylie’ in the office and they all respond without exception ‘Jenner?’.

I am the age of their mums… give or take a year or two.

No one remembers faxing; little hand held dictaphones with tapes; actual post not emails; filling in by hand time sheets and expenses; a time with no mobile phones. Researching in a library using BOOKS god forbid. Lots of blank looks…

ladygindiva · 23/09/2026 20:45

Went to the opticians and discovered I have both short and long sight now and need varifocals. Fucking depressing.

orangetriangle · 23/09/2026 20:48

my total came to something like £6.47 in B&M, so I gave the young cashier £10.47 , he looked at me and said you’ve given me too much , I said yes but I’ve given you the odd , total blankness ensued …
