Being able to rattle off all my school friends phone numbers from the 80’s but not being able to find my glasses - when they’re on my head 🙄

About 10 years ago we had an intern and she had been born in 1993, a year after I started university, and her mother was a year younger than me!

DangerousLesions · 23/09/2026 19:18

I was having a conversation with staff at my gym about my membership. A young girl behind the desk was visibly shocked to discover when my membership began and the young male manager told me he wasn't born when I joined.

Teaching past pupils' children. I also say I look like Worzel Gummidge!

At a wildlife centre type place they had armadillos.
Ooh I said, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside!

Everyone looked at me in total horror and I realised I was the oldest person there by a good 20 years.

When I told DD that when I was her age there were no mobile phones. She asked how we managed and I tried to explain phone boxes to her. Her reply was "that's weird"😆

Noras · 23/09/2026 19:26

My sons PA has a mum in her early 40s ans a grandmother my age.

That was depressing.

I too am teaching the second generation. Very sobering.

In conversation with a colleague, the TV show Friends came up. He'd never seen an episode, to which I was gobsmacked. It then transpired that he was born after the last episode aired 😳

Teaching the children of the children you taught.

Seeing a blue skies and sun and my first thought is that it’s a good day for washing… 🙄

a test to do with your younger people- ask them to mime how they would talk on the phone? My go to is a bunched up fist as in holding the handle of a landline phone or at the least pinky finger and thumb sticking out.. apparently the kids now mime putting their hand flat to mimic a smart phone??!

I was walking the dog a couple of months ago and I live in an area where there are lots of bars and restaurants. We were walking past this cool bar and there were a dussin people standing around and a speaker in front of them plus a few more men who were trying to perform a song but the speaker was clearly broken because there were just this god awful noise that came out. It was really loud too. A man who was around my age walked past me and was filming them. I’m thinking he was doing it so that he could complain. I smiled at him knowingly. Anyway, the noise stopped eventually and people started clapping and cheering. Turned out it was music.

poweredbyteaandtoast · 23/09/2026 19:30

I told a colleague who’d found something out “well done miss Marple” not a clue who I was talking about!
Also my 11 year old asking what my tablet looked like when I was little, told him they didn’t exist. He asked “what did you watch YouTube on then”

When my kids told me they "did Live Aid in history". I was bloody well there!!!

I went to university as a mature student, aged 43, one history lecture was about post war rationing. I said it was not history as I remembered it.

I was in the car with my son and the Abba song SOS came on...I started to explain about what SOS was and tapping it out in morse code but I gave up

Not thinking rugby players are hot anymore but rather 'Oh gosh, he's so young, I hope he doesn't get hurt!'

Txutxioyigx · 23/09/2026 19:32

There’s a series of clips on TikTok where a guy asks younger colleagues questions relating to song lyrics. I knew them all !
’what were Duran Duran hungry like ?’
’what did ace of base see ?’
’what do you do if wham are asleep ?’

Teaching the children of the children you taught.

I was in Tesco the other week and what can only be described as a middle aged man said, 'Hello Miss' to me.

Depressing. Have no idea who he was, but he would have been 16 when I last saw him.

cartagenagina · 23/09/2026 19:42

I went to get my eyebrows waxed and shaped and the young beautician asked me what sort of shape I wanted.

I said I really liked Liz Hurleys eyebrows.

No idea who she was. 😳

Random321 · 23/09/2026 19:44

I've trained new graduates for the last couple of years so a couple of times a day!!!

I'm only early 40s.

JontyGentooey · 23/09/2026 19:47

My DD the other day asked me why grown ups say "hang up" the phone. She didn't understand where you'd possibly hang it up or why.

Had a guy in his 20s round recently to quote for some building work and I referred to the Yellow pages, he had absolutely no idea what I was on about.

Letsnotargue · 23/09/2026 19:49

I was listening to DJ X on Spotify and he said ‘that was Kylie Minogue’ and then went on to explain who she was, as if anybody wouldn’t know!

And when ‘Kylie’ automatically means Kylie Jenner to people instead

myheadsjustmush · 23/09/2026 19:53

My DS was whingeing one day and I said "You're like a stuck record"

DS looked at me and said "What's a record mum?"

Emptyandsad · 23/09/2026 19:56

God you all sound young to me!

I went to a small community museum in the Surrey village of Shere. They had things on display there that I remembered from my childhood. Vacuum cleaners with the bag to collect the dust that you connected to a hook at the top of the handle. Mincing machines that you clamped to the edge of the kitchen table and turned the handle. A brace and bit for drilling holes.
