We’re on a ferry on our way to a small Greek Island and I was checking the accommodation arrangements. I have just noticed I booked from 23-30 October not September 😮. The booking is for a week and not refundable. This is so unlike me but what a bloody idiot !

You can also check AirBnB, there are options.

It's not ideal, but you won't have to sleep on the beach 😂

I wouldn’t tell them you’ve already realised, just turn up all happy and excited then get teary if you have to. No ugly crying though. Perhaps get a silk hankie and weep beautifully, like a movie star.

Go in to the place in person and ask to speak to someone about it, it would be really harsh if they have availability now not to transfer it

I sympathise and you are very calm.

A few years ago, I turned the lock the wrong way on the Medici era front door of our VRBO accommodation in Siena. I double locked it, which could only be unlocked from inside as the lock was so stiff.

It was our first night, we were knackered and slightly drunk on aperol. Just as the management Co were about to call the fire brigade to bash the door in, we managed to clear the lock after spraying it with lubricant. (oddly I didn't have any wd40 in my handbag).

Our hands were raw from trying to turn a tiny key.

DH locked up after that. I was no longer trusted with the key.

We also lost £300 on car rental in Rome last year as we used a broker and if you didn't arrive at the desk on the second your booking was due, it was forfeited. Our flight was late.

So DH had to spend a further £400 on Hertz. I cried in the car hire place in front of many clergy.

"No availability" on booking sites doesn't mean there isn't any, only that whatever allocation they gave a particular one's been filled and may well be followed by a further release

You're doing the right thing going straight to the hotel though; being Greece I'll be very surprised if they don't do all they can to help, and if it's a family owned place they'll probably all leap into the fray to assist

Blimey I felt bad booking the London Eye and River Cruise for the wrong day! We had turned up and I realised on the journey, just beforehand that I'd booked the day before. I was so cross with myself! Luckily the lovely people at The LE understood and let us on! In future, both DH and I have agreed to book things together and check dates.

Depending on their Ts&Cs, instead of cancelling, you may be able to transfer your booking to next year?
