Massive holiday cock up !

We’re on a ferry on our way to a small Greek Island and I was checking the accommodation arrangements. I have just noticed I booked from 23-30 October not September 😮. The booking is for a week and not refundable. This is so unlike me but what a bloody idiot !

I once booked my full Christmas food shop and it arrived on the 24th November. I had been so pleased that I got a Christmas Eve date! We ate a lot of smoked salmon salads and fish cakes that month.

People make mistakes but it sounds like it all worked out well for you. Have a great holiday!

This is brilliant 🤣🤣. It’s not exactly as we planned but it’s all worked out and we are having a great time.

I’m glad everything worked out OP and that’s a generous refund, probably because you explained in person and were so lovely. You are lucky with your cool as a cucumber DH, mine would definitely not have been

Nor mine - he would have gone nuclear

I am no earnest Erin but I honestly don’t think I could have accepted the £500 from them. They will be out of pocket for a mistake you made. And that just seems unfair really

Not if they receive another booking.

This really made me laugh! Oops! I once ordered a gorgeous mothers day bouquet for my mum (obviously) and absent mindedly had it sent to myself. Cue spending even more on a second bouquet with same day delivery.

I also once missed a plane by going to Gatwick instead of Heathrow ... expensive mistake!

Sorry to hear that. I can only hope he never makes mistakes!

Aw, that reminds me of the time about 25 years ago when I sent my now late Mum an expensive birthday bouquet in November instead of December!

She phoned to thank me and say that it was a month early - poor mother said she thought she was having a 'senior moment' when the flowers arrived and that she was the one who was confused! Flowers

UnctuousUnicorns · 25/09/2026 18:13

This is many, many decades ago (my dad is 85 now), but one of his brothers once bought Gran some fancy lacy handkerchiefs for her birthday, or maybe it was Mother's Day.

Anyway, he hadn't checked the pack properly - turned out the "handkerchiefs" were actually crotchless knickers! 😳😳😳🤣🤣🤣🤣

He would have been quietly seething and it would have overshadowed the holiday

Why? Why are with someone this horrible @Abracadabra12345 ?

DemonsandMosquitoes · 25/09/2026 19:43

We did this many years ago when we went to Paignton with DS 1. No room at the original booking so we ended up in a fancy five star boutique hotel for five days with a six month old. Expensive lesson.

We met face to face today and had such a nice chat. She was very, very lovely. I said I completely understood she did not need to refund any of it but I was very grateful that she had. We chatted about her lovely pets and agreed we should come back next year and book direct with her. I do think I’d like to as Paxos is lovely.

Not read whole thread, but can you find someone who'd go in your place?
You might not be able to get your money back but I don't see that there would be a problem changing named on the booking

If you don’t read the whole thread at least read the OP updates, otherwise there’s little point in commenting is there?

Everyone (OP’s husband, accommodation owners) has been lovely about this and it is now resolved.

Well do it! Because as it stands she’s hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Late October is low season for Greece.

Reading all the updates is also not strictly necessary, just the date that the OP was written 🤣

mamaduckbone · 26/09/2026 07:59

I’m so glad it worked out for you op.
Our memorable cock-up was many years ago, when Dh booked a break in Paris for my 30th birthday. It was the first time we’d booked a holiday over the internet and it wasn’t until we got to the Eurostar that we realised we were a month LATE for the booking. I was pregnant so it was our last hurrah before the baby came (ds20!) and we didn’t have much spare money - I can still remember how sad I was at the prospect of turning around and going home, as we just couldn’t afford to pay for it all again.
The most wonderful guy at the Eurostar desk took pity on us and managed to find us seats - he even honoured the first class upgrade that Dh had treated us to, and didn’t charge us a penny. I’m quite sure he shouldn’t have done it but it meant we only had to pay for the accommodation again so the trip was saved. I’ve often thought about him over the years and what a lovely person he was!

Pamcakey · 26/09/2026 08:24

Not as far out as a month but I did book a night
in an ice hotel for the wrong night.

We had to take a ski lift to the hotel and by the time I realised we’d booked the wrong night, the ski lift was closed! Up on a mountain in the snow 😅 Thankfully they had a lodge too and we were able to book a night there.

We don’t leave Greece until 13th October and DH was just calculating that it would only be another 9 days until the original mistaken October booking. I can work from anywhere and DH is retired. 😮

We accidentally booked a week’s holiday in Cyprus and then realised we had already booked the week after we arrive home 🤣
so we had our first week came home for 6 days and then flew out there again for another week 🤣

Might be cheaper to stay on than booking return travel?
