Massive holiday cock up !

We’re on a ferry on our way to a small Greek Island and I was checking the accommodation arrangements. I have just noticed I booked from 23-30 October not September 😮. The booking is for a week and not refundable. This is so unlike me but what a bloody idiot !

I'm glad you're sorted - have a great holiday. Will they refund your money?

I'm having a good laugh at the amusing mishaps - not amusing at the time I know!

Thanks to those who shared - I particularly loved the raw hands from the tiny key, and the wrong mountain 😂

FromaBubblegumTree · 23/09/2026 15:12

@Nottulip

That isn't the subject of the thread,. That poster has said that she doesn't want to discuss it. Nobody cares whether you believe her or not.

I hope there will be some accommodation available when you get there! Good luck, OP - the Greeks are normally very hospitable.

That is a myth.

JustWalnut · 23/09/2026 15:15

Glad you're sorted, but is it just me who'd now be booking flights back to Greece next month for a bonus extra holiday?!

ClaudiaWankleman · 23/09/2026 15:16

I booked the wrong dates, and only realised on the layover in Hong Kong, mid way through the journey from London to Sydney.

Luckily I was only 24 hours out and it could be sorted with minimal stress. I haven't felt panic like it though.

Well here we are in entirely different accommodation and a bit further out but the hosts could not have been lovelier. They came to pick us up and have been amazing with all the information. Think we will need to hire a car now which we had ‘t planned to do but turning this into a positive we can really explore the island now.

Thank you for all your great suggestions and sorry to those who have had similar cock ups. It’s good to know it’s not just me.

Glad all sorted. They didn't charge more? Result.

bafta16 · 23/09/2026 15:23

@Iamawomanofconstantsorrow I don't think you are a cunt. If I have to lie on the floor at yoga and hear another tale about Sorrento/ Canada/ Singapore.....anything could happen.

CombatBarbie · 23/09/2026 15:37

Oh ive done similar, booked a ferry the wrong way round! Was fine though and ended up with an upgrade 🤣

Personally id have rocked up and feigned complete ignorance, more likely to have pity served!

MLMsuperfan · 23/09/2026 15:38

So easily done OP. No judgement from me.

What I do these days is to use the Google tools to automatically add events to my Google Calendar from the email confirmations. That removes some error potentials.

I’m sorry this happened and pleased you are sorted even if poorer. Don’t beat yourself up though, it may not have been you. I was booking a flight once and the “click on calendar” suddenly jumped a month. Fortunately l noticed it, but that was down to luck not my scrutiny.

l stopped booking no cancellation options when l lost out during Covid. In addition, l try to get a friend to stand over me when booking anything expensive, so she can cross check.

Enjoy your holiday.

Yes a false economy on my part so lesson learned. The original booking may refund some so we will see. What a day and I didn’t even mention the part of taking the wrong route and having to climb rocky paths complete with cases. I realise this all makes me sound like a complete airhead I’m not usually honest 🤣. Anyway we’re sitting at pretty Gaios port with a cool glass of wine so feeling a bit more chilled now !

@TheDogsMother

Did the original accom agree to refund you?

i don’t know yet. I hope so but they are entirely within their rights if they don’t. It was my completely
my error.

Did you book directly or though a booking service?

You said you booked non refundable so why would you think they might refund? If your contract was with the accommodation themselves they might do so as a good will gesture, but I can't see a booking service doing so.

I'd definitely tell them you will come back next month OP: they are your rooms. You might as well keep the option open.

Alternatively, they may prefer to buy you off with a partial refund so they can sell the rooms 1.5 times instead of just the once. Win-win for both sides!

Are you going to go and see them and explain in person? It's better they see you in person.

TheDogsMother · 23/09/2026 14:15

Wow was this really necessary ! I made a mistake and have now potentially thrown a chunk of money away which is part of the budget for the trip. Yes I have been very about finding a place to stay too.

She's gonna be a miserable, negative person to choose that username op 😂

My DB flew to the wrong country to meet friends on a ski holiday once and I booked and excursion for the wrong Cartagena.

But if she's booked through a booking service they won't be able to refund her even if they want to, as I understand it?

This is one of the reasons I always try to book directly with the accommodation. You often get a better price too.

Gosh, what a stressful experience @TheDogsMother but sending supportive vibes, and hurrah for it all working out!

Thanks @Halsall. Add to that watching Bake Off at 10pm. I flaked out before the judging after a long day travelling (and Greek wine and dinner) 🤣

Oh of course, sorry I missed that.

I do generally book direct but some smaller places don’t take bookings via a website and just rely on the usual platforms. I’m not going to let it ruin the holiday and just make sure I double them triple check in future.

I arrived in Bratislava at midnight to find I’d booked a lovely hotel for the following year. They were very helpful and booked me another hotel but I had the map they’d drawn me upside down and couldn’t find it. I’ve just discovered I’ve booked 2 train return journeys to Manchester for my trip to Azerbaijan tomorrow. I thought I’d learnt my lesson but sadly not, obviously. Good luck OP, you may get some days on the beach yet!

Yes don’t let it stress you.

I think there was a thread where people shared the ways in which they have messed up and lost money.

I have also lost money to the ADHD tax.
