Yes perhaps we do have an issue with too many people wanting to come to this country, but we also bought it on ourselves.
Hundreds of years we spread our empire and spread our language over much of the world. So many countries still have political systems legal systems etc with that are at least loosely based on ours. For the many countries which are former colonies of ours, we retain some familiarity.
So is it really any surprise that our country is a popular destination for settling in? In much of the world if you were taught a second language it will be English. If that's where you claim asylum you're one step ahead already in building a new life if you can speak the language.
There's certainly an irony about a little Island taking over much of the world, returning it because those actions weren't really acceptable anymore, but now being a popular destination because of the familiarity became with our empire spreading.
I'm not sure what the answer is. I'd much prefer there was a legal route for people to claim asylum. But if they come by boat I certainly don't want people drowning.
I'm personally not going to criticize economic migrants either. Most of them are moving because they want a better life for their family, and for the next generation, I can't fault that aspiration.
Family and friends that have moved all over the world and have made new lives for themselves in different countries, so it would be hypocritical of thinking people shouldn't do that here.
But equally they have to be practical limits, where those are, whether we've reached them, and how we go about managing that I'm not sure.
