Which is why Sunak's govt was on the right track in passing legislation which denied anyone arriving here illegally the right to claim asylum in the UK, but insisted that they be processed in a third country. Labour chucked that out in a fit of spiteful stupidity.

We have a duty to take in asylum seekers. They are fleeing war-torn lands, and the vast majority of displaced people end up in adjacent countries. However they get here, they are entitled under international law to claim asylum. About 66% of the succeed, the rest are deported. Asylum seekers are a very small proportion of immigrants - so stop conflating all immigrants with refugees.

The number of asylum seekers has decreased under Labour, and we are 16th in Europe per capita in taking in refugees. Refugees make up less than 1% of the UK population.

Immigration from non-EU countries has declined immensely because of Labour's new visa requirements, after ballooning under the Tories. Immigrants have no recourse to public funds. It's tough to meet the requirement to get a visa.

The UK relies on immigration to run the NHS, do care work, and immigrants as a group are net tax contributors. They tend to be younger, very hard working and ambitious and are no more likely to commit crime than anyone else. We need them to pay tax to fund pensioners.

The only problematic culture in the UK are the racist arseholes burning down houses, blocking ports, committing DV and attacking rescue boats with knives. It's time the government cracked down on these thuggish morons, and stop giving this issue salience.

No-one is questioning that people will always want to move to other countries (these people are not mostly escaping wars btw). The issue is how this is dealt with by our government. It is not our responsibility to take in and support every person who wants to arrive here.

The Tory plan was not for asylum seekers to be processed in a third country but for them to be deported to Rwanda never to be seen or thought of again.

@Babyboomtastic - With migration though you have to look at the size of the country in landmass as well as population size.

The UK has a population of 69-70 million with 285 people per sq km.

France has 66-68 million but is 2.65 times larger than the UK in landmass and has 122-127 people per sq km.

Spain has 91 people per sq. km.

Poland has 80-83 people per sq. km.

Germany has the largest population of 84 million but because of the landmass size has 240-243 people per sq. km.

If you take England as a country on its own, it has a huge 430 people per sq. km. It doesn't come as a surprise that England feels overcrowded.

When do you say enough is enough. When the UK reaches 80 million, 90 million, 100 million?

The government responds to undocumented migrants by deporting them.

They respond to asylum claimants (who are permitted to enter the country by irregular means) by processing their claims, and either granting them refugee status or deporting them. Deportations have significantly increased under Labour.

It mirrored the Aus system. Which means we could have safe passage as they do for women and children instead. But no we need overcrowded dinghies with high risk, and deaths at sea.

And to make it even harder almost impossible for women to join later.
