If you take food on holiday what do you take?

I have a friend who always takes PEK and corned beef to make sandwiches. I mocked her, then was so happy when we went away and after being by the pool all day we could have a little sandwich on the balcony before going out.

DP and I are going away in November and for some reason TUI has given us about 10 suitcases each. I’m used to trying to cram everything into an under seat bag. But this time I’ve got checked baggage, carry on luggage, and a personal item. Don’t know what to do with it all! So I’m going to check a suitcase and take snacks.

If you do this, what do you take?

If you don’t and you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine but of no interest at all.

I'm sorry - your friend takes canned meat on holiday - do you go on holiday to 1950?

Yes. Good one.

It just goes to show that PEK isn't eaten as widely as the OP thinks it is.

Now, Fray Bentos pie anyone?

Mokate 3 in 1 coffee sachets and some nice biscuits for watching TV at night.

Squeezy squash! Europe doesn't seem to have squash and I get bored of drinking water!
Other than that, most things can be purchased at the supermarket

The WHOLE of Europe presumably outside Britain and Ireland has no squash on the entire continent???

Yep squash is not a thing in Europe.
Lime cordial and grenadine type syrups only. None of them are like squash as the Brits know it.

Very recently squeezey mini sugar free syrup type things have become available. Currently a bit of a trend but I doubt they will ever catch on the way squash is in the UK. Kids here just drink water or possibly juce mixed with water/fizzy water

Always Yorkshire Gold teabags for DH and decaf Nespresso pods for me. I often take shortbread fingers for some reason - don't really have them at home very much, but there's something about a nice, buttery shortbread finger that tastes amazing after a busy day at the beach!

edit: I forgot to add Marmite. There's not many places I go to without a jar of Marmite tucked into my bag. And no, Vegemite will NOT do, bleurgh.

Genevieva · Yesterday 14:01

As others have said: tea. It’s essential. And a thermos. I have a travel tea set with teapot too! 🙈

Genevieva · Yesterday 14:02

Also, for family trips, I make large tray bakes of gingerbread cake or ginger Parkin. It travels really well.

Blueuggboots · Yesterday 14:02

Coffee and teabags.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · Yesterday 14:04

Teabags definitely! Also take packets of nice shortbread to give as presents to anyone who is particularly kind/helpful.

Although we have been known to just scoff the shortbread too...

Never heard of pek! I don’t take anything really, maybe some squash for the children and snacks for the journey but that’s it!

Rookie93 · Yesterday 14:42

PEK is a European brand and originally was Polish but don't know who owns it now. Been selling to the UK for decades - probably at least 50yrs when the comunist block needed hard currency. Has a good reputation for high quality tinned meat products.

I love having a little something to eat in the hotel room or while traveling. I carry a bag of nuts, crackers, cheese, sweets etc. Even nicer if it's a treat I normally wouldn't buy, I like to fish a bag of something tasty out of my suitcase and snack on it after a shower in the hotel room while I scroll thru the tv stations looking for tomorrows weather report.

Yogurt and dry cereal/granola is a nice cheap breakfast or granola bars with coffee. Fills us up enough to hit the day running then we get a sit down lunch or dinner later. Nuts or cheese & crackers in late afternoon or end of day, and a little piece of packaged cake or a cookie before bed is perfect.

My husband used to think it was silly but he'd be eyeing the food the second it appeared.

If we're not flying I carry a little paring knife in a sheath or H brings a folding pocket knife- very handy to cut up cheese/fruit or open a package etc.

Last train trip we took I bought sandwiches the night before w/o any sauce on them so they didn't get soggy and we really enjoyed them esp as the food on the train was mediocre at best and costly. I'd rather spend my food budget on restaurant meals than expensive crappy food while traveling.

I'm american and recall a brit whose parents wished they could carry gallons of water along with their tea bags when they visited! The suffering was real LOL.

RampantIvy · Yesterday 15:43

I think I must be unusual in mumsnet world in that I rarely snack. Snacking just puts me off my food. I eat meals when I am hungry.

budgiegirl · Yesterday 15:52

I don't take anything, as I enjoy going round supermarkets when abroad, and there's nothing from home that I can't live without for a couple of weeks.

But I do remember my mum taking packs of butter on the family holidays to Spain in the later 70's/early 80's. She'd freeze them so they'd stay cold for longer, and pack them in the suitcase. She also used to take bacon sometimes.

And I've never heard of PEK.

Why "for Mumsnet"? Do people on other websites routinely pretend to know what things are when they don't? A shockingly large number of people either don't live in the UK or don't eat meat or even (perversely) both.

I had a pretty good idea from context that the OP meant some kind of potted meat, but PEK specifically is hardly a household name. And the only reason that even SPAM is so well known is because Margaret Thatcher famously had it for Christmas dinner when she was living in the flat over the petrol station with Joe Biden and Rush Limbaugh.

I'm in my 50s so old enough to have lived through the Thatcher years but I have absolutely no memory of Mrs Thatcher eating it.

I know about Spam because we had it occasionally and - more importantly - I remember the Monty Python Spam sketch (which, I'm pretty sure, is the source of Spam as a synonym for junk email and for the use of spam as a verb (to spam someone).

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · Yesterday 16:00

My dad always brings fucking pek, even when we’re just going to like the highlands or something he’s got it so he’s “prepared” 😂.

I always bring some hot sauce. I actually have a little key chain with my small hot sauce on, but if we’re going away away I’ll shove a few bottles in mine or DHs bag. I just like a spesific one so I find it’s best to bring myself.

I haven't had a Fray Bentos pie for over 40 years because I went veggie when I was at primary school but I used to really love them and they were one of the few things that I missed when l first stopped eating meat.

Verv · Yesterday 16:27

Ive never heard of Pek either!

Marmite, proper coffee and my bodum press/mug/all in one thingy.
