If you take food on holiday what do you take?

I have a friend who always takes PEK and corned beef to make sandwiches. I mocked her, then was so happy when we went away and after being by the pool all day we could have a little sandwich on the balcony before going out.

DP and I are going away in November and for some reason TUI has given us about 10 suitcases each. I’m used to trying to cram everything into an under seat bag. But this time I’ve got checked baggage, carry on luggage, and a personal item. Don’t know what to do with it all! So I’m going to check a suitcase and take snacks.

If you do this, what do you take?

If you don’t and you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine but of no interest at all.

PEK founded in 1976 so just a bit older than me. I never knew I had assumed it was an old fashioned thing back in the 80s 🫣

Ate tinned spam very rarely growing up but never Pek. Ingredient list is very similar to each other, but why is Spam so much more expensive than Pek?!

Tinned meat is not something I want to eat on holiday though. Holidays are for treats and a tin of congealed pork stuffed with fat and salt is no treat. Trying the local food is a big part of a trip for me.

Christ. People can do both. How hard can this be?

Nipping into a deli to buy local delicacies is hardly onerous or a waste of time. What an odd way to think. I love a look around local food shops and supermarkets. Sitting by a pool doing nothing else for a fortnight would bore me to tears.

Apart from tea and coffee bags I don't want to eat English food on holiday. Part of the joy of being on holiday is eating the local cuisine and drinking local wines. Fortunately neither of us has any dietary requirements.

Are you hard of thinking?

not everyone likes the same things you know ... and that's ok.

My sister won't step foot in a supermarket abroad - she would rahter go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

i love a browse and buying local bits - get some interesting stuff. But neither of usare right or wrong....

Buy snacks and food when you arrive. It will be cheaper and nicer and fresh better quality for your health.

Taking canned meat from the UK to EU countries is prohibited. Not sure if that applies to you, but thought I’d mention it. You can be fined if caught.

Earl Grey teabags, my collapsible coffee filter and enough ground coffee to last the first couple of days

Only tea because I am a bit obsessive about tea. Also herbal teas because I drink those in the evening often. I don’t drink alcohol and largely can’t drink coffee daily anymore either, so tea is very important to me.

Otherwise, last thing I’d want to be eating on holiday are some crushed up mini cheddars. Going to markets and supermarkets when I travel is literally one of the highlights. We eat a lot of picnics abroad from whatever tasty things I find, so it’s like the equivalent of going to a museum to me.

Edited

See, we will be drinking a fuck load and will be hungover. We’re going straight from the plane, dumping our stuff in the hotel room, then going straight out to watch the match, play pool, see some singers etc. So the next day we will be hungover by the pool where we’ll eat, but when I’ve had a drink all I want is carbs so it’ll be a nice to have sandwiches and crisps after a shower whilst we play cards on the balcony before going back out. Also DP’s quite fussy so I will eat whatever whilst he can go up and make himself some food if he wants to.

I definitely don’t want to leave the hotel to track down any delis or supermarkets. I do not enjoy it and don’t understand why so many people seem to love supermarket shopping abroad.

I am with your sister, but a friend I often holiday with loves perusing the supermarkets. Another friend enjoys clothes shopping whilst we’re away - I couldn’t think of anything worse. I’m not sure why so many people on here are baffled at the idea that different people like different things.

Are you going to Benidorm?

I’m happy to have a few unhealthy days. I’ll be drinking copious amounts of alcohol and eat a lot of rich, tasty food. I’m going straight to the pub, not to buy healthy snacks.

No, we went to Benidorm last year. Tenerife this year.

I didn't bring these but the things I really missed when I lived in NY was Ribena and Marmite. And decent teabags.

I bought a kettle and found my roommate had cooked ramen noodles inside it. I thought she was bonkers but then realized that Americans don't seem to have kettles in their houses?! No wonder their tea tastes shite.

There is a kettle. It’s a part of Tenerife where lots of Brits go.

You do surprise me 😆

Pek chopped pork tastes vile in my opinion.

Hope you enjoy though, the world would be boring if we were all the same.

If it helps with your snobbery, I’ve also been to Copenhagen, Malmo, the Isle of Skye, Tromso, Svalbard, Sicily and North Wales this year, and am going to Krakow on Boxing Day. I do these trips with my friends.

DP likes to go away for a few days to places where we can go to bars, play pool, see some tribute acts, swim and laze around. I am more than happy with that.

Needs to be in a sandwich with salad cream and I don’t how any adult in the UK doesn’t know what it is, but feel huge sympathy for them.

Tinned ham. Never heard of it referred to as PEK before.

fruitpastille · Yesterday 12:55

What about a pack or two of pre sliced cheddar, some pickle and crackers? That should be OK out of the fridge for a couple of days.

Ginmonkeyagain · Yesterday 12:59

I'm sorry - your friend takes canned meat on holiday - do you go on holiday to 1950?

Janefx40 · Yesterday 13:03

Bjorkdidit · 21/09/2026 17:57

Predictably for Mumsnet, we have several people claiming to have not heard of a common brand of canned meat or to have ever eaten it.

Well I’m Jewish and haven’t eaten meat since I became an adult anyway. So canned pork isn’t high on my list. And no I’ve never heard of it (tho I wasn’t one of the previous people who commented). I have heard of spam and corned beef tho.

@FCCRULESi take loads!! In my checked bag I take Marmite, bagels, peanut butter (because one of my kids is fussy), tea bags, my favourite coffee, ketchup, cereal, kids snacks, sometimes even olive oil, washing up liquid, sponge, dishwasher tablets if we’re going to cook and it won’t be supplied. And also washing powder. In hand luggage more snacks and food for plane!

Stormyrose · Yesterday 13:06

We usually go all inclusive, but even if not, we never take food, we do take plane snacks though, generally I take dried fruit and sweets like fruit pastels, and some Pringles and some chocolate, we never eat it all, but pick at it all.
