If you take food on holiday what do you take?

I have a friend who always takes PEK and corned beef to make sandwiches. I mocked her, then was so happy when we went away and after being by the pool all day we could have a little sandwich on the balcony before going out.

DP and I are going away in November and for some reason TUI has given us about 10 suitcases each. I’m used to trying to cram everything into an under seat bag. But this time I’ve got checked baggage, carry on luggage, and a personal item. Don’t know what to do with it all! So I’m going to check a suitcase and take snacks.

If you do this, what do you take?

If you don’t and you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine but of no interest at all.

Where are people going that they can’t buy Pringles and have to take them in their luggage?! I think I’ve been to quite a few far flung places (obviously not far flung enough!), but Pringles seem to be everywhere.

Boo, don't take Haribo, you can get haribo anywhere in Europe ... And more variety!

Well ... So you don't think it sounds disgusting then? You've obviously had pork ina. Tin and eaten it and seemingly enjoyed it?

It would have taken you 5 seconds to Google it (as I did) and realised it was pork in a tin.

Also, to claim you thought "spam was something from the war" rather implies you have no cultural awareness at all....

I'd don't eat spam, or buy it... but know it's still made, there's a controversial history of it in Hawaii and it's impact on health etc...

Yep, it was horrid then. But PEK isn’t luncheon meat. I have googled and it’s a different product altogether.

Powdered oat milk and decaf coffee. DH takes marmite for his toast.

If we are abroad I don’t take food but do take my little sharp kitchen knife because the ones in self catering are usually not that sharp.
If we are in the uk I don’t take food with me but get a Sainsbury’s delivery delivered the evening we arrive with loads of treats, cheeses, cold meats, nice bread etc. 😍

Never heard of PEK

Instant coffee, Redbush tea and chocolate for America.

When then kids have been on school trips: dried fruit, crackers, cereal bar or similar, shelf stable processed meat like chorizo, apples if it's the uk. I would send nuts, especially for the vegetarian, but school trip 😔.

Long car journey: crackers, water, whatever fruit is left over, dried fruit and nuts, packet of boiled sweets or toffees, possibly whatever's left in the fridge that won't last. There's a picture of us all eating unwashed raw carrots during a seven hour wait for the RAC so I get what you are saying.

Anywhere else: I don't bother

I take a lot coffee, soya milk, GF pasta and bread, cereal bars, box of red wine, berocca, cool bottles.

This has reminded me that when I did my year in Germany during my Law and German degree, my boss had done her Masters in Scotland and asked me to bring her Tetley tea bags when I went home for Christmas.

PEK for us was like Spam's povvo cousin. So that's what we had 😂

Ate tinned spam very rarely growing up but never Pek. Ingredient list is very similar to each other, but why is Spam so much more expensive than Pek?!

Tinned meat is not something I want to eat on holiday though. Holidays are for treats and a tin of congealed pork stuffed with fat and salt is no treat. Trying the local food is a big part of a trip for me.

Nipping into a deli to buy local delicacies is hardly onerous or a waste of time. What an odd way to think. I love a look around local food shops and supermarkets. Sitting by a pool doing nothing else for a fortnight would bore me to tears.

Apart from tea and coffee bags I don't want to eat English food on holiday. Part of the joy of being on holiday is eating the local cuisine and drinking local wines. Fortunately neither of us has any dietary requirements.

PEK seems to be a brand name anyway, they appear to have lots of different lines.

I guess if I wanted tinned pork, etc, I'd just buy supermarket own brand as I do for most things. So, there's two reasons I've not heard of it - 1) I don't think I have ever bought tinned meat (not for any reason, it's just never occured to me that it's a thing); 2) I'd not look at the brand names if I did buy it, or if I perused that shelf.

Only tea because I am a bit obsessive about tea. Also herbal teas because I drink those in the evening often. I don’t drink alcohol and largely can’t drink coffee daily anymore either, so tea is very important to me.

Otherwise, last thing I’d want to be eating on holiday are some crushed up mini cheddars. Going to markets and supermarkets when I travel is literally one of the highlights. We eat a lot of picnics abroad from whatever tasty things I find, so it’s like the equivalent of going to a museum to me.

Why "for Mumsnet"? Do people on other websites routinely pretend to know what things are when they don't? A shockingly large number of people either don't live in the UK or don't eat meat or even (perversely) both.

I had a pretty good idea from context that the OP meant some kind of potted meat, but PEK specifically is hardly a household name. And the only reason that even SPAM is so well known is because Margaret Thatcher famously had it for Christmas dinner when she was living in the flat over the petrol station with Joe Biden and Rush Limbaugh.

I've never heard of PEK and I just asked around the office and nobody in here had either. I'm not sure why some people don't belive that people haven't heard of it.

I thought PEK meat had been around much longer than 40 years. I'm 48 and we always had it when I was small my Nan too so pretty sure it wasn't new then
