If you take food on holiday what do you take?

I have a friend who always takes PEK and corned beef to make sandwiches. I mocked her, then was so happy when we went away and after being by the pool all day we could have a little sandwich on the balcony before going out.

DP and I are going away in November and for some reason TUI has given us about 10 suitcases each. I’m used to trying to cram everything into an under seat bag. But this time I’ve got checked baggage, carry on luggage, and a personal item. Don’t know what to do with it all! So I’m going to check a suitcase and take snacks.

If you do this, what do you take?

If you don’t and you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine but of no interest at all.

I'm as working class as you can get and have never heard it called PEK, it's chopped meat here. And bloody horrible unless it's corned beef on a hash (and a proper hash not a stew, just potatoes onions and cheese!).
I don't take anything, don't drink tea or coffee so that makes a difference.

I'd have pate and baguette from the local supermarket.

Which of course, despite also being mushed up meat with additives, is likely more acceptable to the 'euww yuck, canned meat crowd'.

Nothing. Part of the joy of going on a foreign holiday is exploring the supermarket. That said, we’re not tea drinkers or Pek eaters, so we can get most of our needs met locally. At the supermarket we pick up wine and beers, snacks, sweets, a few pieces of fruit, and probably some Nescafé which tastes great in Greece but bloody awful in the UK.

I find absolutely no pleasure in going shopping on holiday. Some of my friends do and I’ve been with them, but it’s not for me at all.

If you’re going to the shops to buy bread, why don’t you just get snacks there? Also, you’d be better off buying wine there too as it will be cheaper than the hotel. As you said it’s not self catering, how do you chop things up, wash it up, etc.? Sounds like a level of faff I could not be arsed for on holiday!

I think I find it hard to understand the rationale as foreign snacks are my absolute favourite! I would put them in my top 5 of reasons to go on holiday! I understand it’s difficult for picky eaters, but I can’t think of any food I couldn’t get on holiday I would miss for few weeks enough to bring it with me - and that includes travelling with children. I can’t eat gluten, so I have on a few occasions brought some gluten free crackers, but didn’t end up eating them.

I have also never heard of pek, but I will google it as I love to try new foods. Can’t say I’m a huge fan of spam (if it’s similar), I tried it once on holiday as where I was they seemed to be obsessed by it (it was on a lot of menus!), but didn’t really get the appeal.

Nothing - as I love foreign supermarkets and (unlike everyone else) don't really drink tea. The only exception would be if I was going somewhere out of Europe where I'd bring some nice plain snacks, like oatcakes and possibly mint imperials. Also a bottle of whisky from duty free!

Abroad - the must have immediate stuff especially if arriving very late(self catering): tea bags, bag ground coffee, carton long life milk, pack of granola. Also my protein powder. I love food shopping abroad and finding interesting stuff, most of all lovely fruit!

Self catering in the UK - too much to list, but mainly the boring stuff that I really can’t be mithered with trundling around the supermarket for on holiday.

Because I don’t want to. I want to call into the nearest corner shop very quickly and buy bread. That’s it. I probably will get the wine there too.

I will take a plastic knife. It’s just a ham sandwich, not a lot of prep.

That’s my favourite bit.

What about pocket meat?

I am born and raised Irish and never heard of PEK but googling it just seems canned meat and I know at one point I was able to buy and enjoyed canned corned beef but have not come across it in decades so now I have to start looking in shops again for it.

I saw a tin of reduced fat,salt corned beef tin..wait for it ..£4.50 a go ..no ta Asda.

I asked if you meant luncheon meat? That came in a tin - usually eaten on Sundays with salad for tea. But I still have never heard of PEK. I grew up in Yorkshire but my grandparents were from Newcastle.

I’m another one. Never heard of PEK, certainly never bought it and never knowingly eaten it. And I eat all sorts of stuff so that’s not an affectation.

I would have to drive to the north of Ireland to find an asda so even more expensive for me lol but thats an outrageous price. We get lovely packets of sliced corned beef here in the supermarket or better again in the butchers. Raging now the butcher is closed cos I would murder a corned beef sambo right now.

I don't know about Ireland but in the UK at least, it's never gone anywhere, always been available, we have corned beef hash a few times every winter.

It's cheapest in Aldi, no point buying brands as it's all pretty much the same as it's made in the same giant south American mega factories

I’m fascinated by PEK now which I’ve also never heard of. Will have to get some - is it corned beef or spam like? I’ve had corned beef hash before and like it. Haven’t had spam since the ‘70’s.

I always bring decaf PG tips and two bottles of my favourite wine if I’m travelling to a place where I know I’m not keen on the wine ie: Greece. I have those special padded wine carriers.

If I’m in Spain, France or Italy, I love a trip to a big supermarket. It’s an essential part of my holiday.
