If you take food on holiday what do you take?

I have a friend who always takes PEK and corned beef to make sandwiches. I mocked her, then was so happy when we went away and after being by the pool all day we could have a little sandwich on the balcony before going out.

DP and I are going away in November and for some reason TUI has given us about 10 suitcases each. I’m used to trying to cram everything into an under seat bag. But this time I’ve got checked baggage, carry on luggage, and a personal item. Don’t know what to do with it all! So I’m going to check a suitcase and take snacks.

If you do this, what do you take?

If you don’t and you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine but of no interest at all.

You could also decant them into a plastic bottle if you wanted to be on the safe side. Refill your glass bottles at home with them.

Ive never heard of PEK either but it sounds grim
We take seasonings/spice marinades, jar of tikka marinade, tea bags, blue curaçao for cocktails 🍸 , protein powder for ds, some cereal bars and pringles and sweets for the plane

A box of fever tree tonic water, as we always buy gin at the airport or on the flight. Occasionally, tea bags. Some sort of muesli bar, just in case the flight is delayed and we get in late.

Predictably for Mumsnet, we have several people claiming to have not heard of a common brand of canned meat or to have ever eaten it.

Something you’ve never heard of sounds grim? Don’t believe you for one second.

Teabags, when I travelled in Asia I took marmite.
Fwiw, I like tinned meat in fried rice, spam is the best but any will do.

And, even though they have never heard of it or eaten it, they also think it’s grim…

Meat from a can sounds grim. Sounds like spam (chopped pork and ham in a can)

Abroad - tea bags and coffee bags
Self catering in rhe UK - as above plus milk, bread, butter, cheese, cereal and a meal for the first evening. Basically everything we need until the next day.

We like all cuisines and have no dietary restrictions so we don't need to take any food abroad.

Never heard of PEK either. But chopped pork in a can sounds delicious.

If in this country whatever needs using up out of the fridge.

If going abroad, tea bags. Yes, we are those people. Sorry, I know every single country sells tea bags, but they're really not the same (from bitter experience).

If we have the car in Europe it's packed to the gunwales with lovely French food and wine when we come home.

That recipe pictured in the link looks amazing (tiger bread made into garlic bread topped with PEK and cheese).

We usually have Spam in so I would make it with that instead, I think they're pretty similar. I try to avoid eating too much of it for health reasons but I do have it for breakfast every once in a while. I also make spam and egg fried rice if we have some rice that needs using up.

I have never ever heard of PEK. Pork in a tin sounds revolting. I thought spam was something from the war. I wouldn’t want that either. No tinned meat concoctions.

Nothing useful to add because I have never heard of PEK and always take tea bags on holiday.

I buy crisps, and every stupid chemical filled UPF savoury snack I can find in the local supermarket, but Lays crisps are non negotiable, they are so nice. To have with an aperitif of course... Which I also buy in the supermarket. Oh those happy days...

Yorkshire decaf tea as I only drink decaf and rarely find it abroad. I love supermarkets abroad.

Depends where we’re going.
Long haul - nothing. often it doesn’t survive the journey in great shape.
France - if self catering and taking the car, a peppermill and sharp knife, (have been known to take a small knife sharpener too) pack of ground coffee (French supermarket coffee is not as good as Waitrose) jar of home made jam if I have plenty. Tabasco or a few dried chillies.)
Italy/Spain - nothing really.

Yorkshire teabags, always.

I have a fussy kid who won’t always find food she likes on hols so if we are self catering and have space I take a few basics which I know she will always eat, eg a sheath of Weetabix, and maybe a few bits like a couple of tins of tuna, some pesto and some pasta.

I’m not “claiming”. I’ve never heard of it or seen it.

Self-catering here, depending on location, I used to take teabags, coffee, orange juice, cereal, bread, butter, yoghurt, marmalade, olive oil, pasta, rice, corned beef, tuna, baked beans, a couple of jars of pasta sauce, a sharp knife and sharpener and little Tupperware salt and pepper pots.

I had heard of it, but it isn't on my radar. It is similar to Spam but a different brand. I don't know anyone who eats it and I don't recall seeing it on supermarket shelves, but that will be because I wasn't looking for it.

I suspect non tinned ham/spam eaters won't be familiar with it.
