I didn't realise this thread had started far back. Glad to be here, for peace, common sense and warmth.

Hey. I watch the thread as it gives me comfort but rarely comment. Working class girl, with everything stacked against me, made good through hard work, sacrifice and sweating blood and tears to give my child a better life. I’m now the enemy. Not a worker. Suffering from the VAT on independent schools (amongst other things) whilst supporting my family including my parents. Now just found out husband is being made redundant. His firm cannot survive the actions of this government. Never been politically but loathe this government. We will be ok but I know many will not.

I was actually thinking about that the other day - people who have really worked hard to improve things in their lives… I feel as if there’s a cultural narrative that criticises them. I know of one lady who came from a very difficult background, was working as a receptionist for one of my clients from the age of 17. Very good and professional. And she told me that the people she’s grown up with were actually taking the mickey out of her and asking her why she didn’t go on benefits. She’s looking at all the options for further education that she can do in evening classes and her parents have apparently questioned this decision and say it’s too hard!

I fear the BBC’s days are numbered. I’m a fan of the BBC model and system. But it does make it hard for supporters of it to stand up for it.

So long as the licence fee is tied to TV reception it’s just about logical and defensible (to people like me). But an internet levy would be very hard to justify, even if in the future we will all receive public service TV that way, because it will be just one of countless different services supplied by internet. It would be like saying “you can bank, message your friends, read an online newspaper, use MN and do Wordle, but you have to pay for the BBC if you want to do those things, and everything else”.

It also doesn’t help that the BBC has become metropolitan left in its news and current affairs coverage. How people can think the BBC is right-wing is beyond me.

There’s also increasingly little worthwhile entertainment on the BBC.

I’m another who ditched the BBC ages ago

The bizarre thing is, I actually think they have a viable commercial model. I think there are enough people who pay for it as it is. I don’t know what the charge is now, but it comes out similar to Netflix doesn’t it? They’ve had so much money to splash around in for so long, they just don’t understand how to make it work.

BBC is a shade under £15 pcm. Netflix is cheaper

The thing I find terrifying is that we are meant to believe that we have capability to detect missiles flying towards the uk at three times the speed of sound in time to manage them yet we don't seem to be able detect a rubber dingy moving fairly slowly across one of the most surveilled waterways.
