Does that mean (those of you buying gas for your barbies) you don't have a gas hob in the house? I thought in the event of power cut you could still use it albeit it would require manually lit (just bought 2 boxes of safety matches today).

Or am I wrong and about to blow myself up in the event of a power cut?

and what happens when bonds have to be refinanced at the now higher interest rates. Imagine that is going to create another really big hole! Not for this budget but not boding well for the future is it.

We used to have a gas hob and it worked fine in a power cut. As you say, you'll have to light it with matches.
I have all electric appliances now so can't cook if the power goes off. I miss my gas hob.

I wouldn't bet against gas supply issues either. We have a gas hob, but I'm not convinced re our energy security.

I did wonder if the gas could be cut off but surely that is dangerous?

Just as well I bought my new battery operated kettle then. Yes really. It's a thing.

Needs charged up but then works on battery for about 5 boils. So 5 cups of tea per power cut unless I charge it up via my power bank. It does charge via a USB-C cable but not sure if powerbank will be powerful enough to do it. Still 5 cups of tea is better than nothing. Might buy some cup of soups to make with it.

With Andy getting his warnings in about the budget today I am expecting the unexpected. He is already reassuring everyone about their living standards so I guess that means more taxes for all. Andy I am sorry about your dad (truly, I've lost both my parents) but no cuts is going to be a mistake. Still when your power is off come round and I'll make you a cup of tea in my new kettle. Bring the missus.

No gas job here. Have a fireplace so I suppose could light a fire and toast stuff on forks 😂 Reminds me to get the chimney swept 😃

Thanks for the hot water bottle reminder ! Ours are ruined after putting them in the freezer over summer

We have a gas coming stove and it was a comfort a few winters ago knowing we could get hot drinks and hot water bottles in an emergency

On the hot water bottles, I bought 3 on my lunch break. They're half price at Argos atm so only £5 each. They can double up as stocking fillers for my dc at xmas.

Oooh - -off topic, but very clever idea using for cold in the summer….

I had a cooling pet mat 😂 you just keep it in the fridge. Also, I used to travel on the tube with a flat frozen water bottle. Do you know what I mean, the kind that you can roll up when it’s empty? If you have to commute when it’s boiling hot, you can actually be a bit discreet keeping that between your back and the seat, lol.

Although if anyone spots you, they will inevitably say “ oh my God, that’s a brilliant idea” 😂

The financial news of the last few days is utterly miserable. Inflation, fuel prices, energy prices, gilts yields, interest rates, all on the rise. And more tax rises on the horizon. Its going to be a rough winter for a lot of people

I wouldn't be worried about gas security because unless you have a generator central heating will go off with the electric, so usage will drop tremendously.

When the (latest) thing about a crisis stock came about I thought no, not again … but since have thought again. Tesco will haul my store home this Friday, Amazon deliver the HWB and power pack, we have candles, matches, a charcoal bbq with more charcoal and our water comes from a private supply that has a generator nearby. Neighbour has a coal fired Rayburn and will take a casserole dish for the oven. There’s a dairy in walking distance as presumably no one will collect their milk. We’re lucky to be very rural and have the ability to shoot game and a garden with standing root veg.
One thing no one has mentioned is paracetamol etc.
I'm doing this for an adverse weather event or similar uncontrollable crisis, and trust not for when AB and co f—-k thing further up the Swanee.

Talking of paracetamol. What about prescription meds. Our GP surgery computers go down a few times a year. Our NHS app went down last month. So it's not a bad idea to keep on top of repeat prescription ordering.

What the fuck is up with the diesel prices?? Is it the Houthis? But why don't they lower fuel duty at least?

I've stocked up on OTC meds too. I do this every autumn to be fair ready for cold and flu season. I've been gradually getting ahead with the prescription meds just by ordering a little early each time.

It was £1.85 at my last fill up. The treasury will be raking it in so I doubt they'll do anything (except blame someone else of course).

Where I am, it's just hit £2. It's rural so people often need to drive quite long distances as well so it's especially painful. And I just saw it's forecast to hit £2.30 by 2027.
And you can imagine what those on heating oil, which is almost everyone, are going through.

Given the vast, vast knock-on effects this will have, not lowering fuel duty is a terrible move, but deeply unsurprising.

I don't think average people can absorb much more.

Not a chance. The cynic in me thinks all that extra tax will be used to demonstrate their BS welfare payments are wholly affordable.
