Couples who Hold Hands

I’m interested in other people’s views on couples who walk around holding hands.

Do you and your partner do this?

We do, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really see others doing it and wondered if we’re perceived as a bit weird.

I hate this ageist shit that tells women what length hair they should have and whether they are too old to hold their partners hand

I dislike this ageist shit that says it's "sweet" when an elderly couple hold hands. It's patronising - old people aren't a separate species.

Exactly…we are an older couple, we are neither ‘sweet’ or ‘cute’

Yeah, that's making me cringe too. 'My 75 year old great aunt and uncle hold hands wherever they go, it's so 'sweet.' #cringe 😬

What on earth is so 'sweet' about being tethered to one another? Yes, yes, yes, I guess (as a few people have said) that some older people may be helping each other to 'balance' but holding hands all the time is a bit weird. It is so restrictive and uncomfortable. Do these people not get sweaty palms?! 😬

And don't even get me started on a family of 4 - (2 adults and 2 almost adults) all walking together in public and all holding hands! (And walking in a big line!) WTF?

And holding hands with your husband in bed?! While you sleep??? Confused

What parallel universe have I stepped into here? Are you all otters?! Are you holding hands so you don't lose each other???

.

Dahliasrule · 05/09/2026 20:42

Always have done. Been together 59 years.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 05/09/2026 20:51

If we're out on a date night. If we're out with kids we usually have other hands to hold.

lebin · 05/09/2026 21:35

Never. Partner has always hated holding arms while walking, says it makes him feel restricted!
I never think couples that do are odd though!

Bigreddog25 · 05/09/2026 21:35

We don't, but I wouldn't see it and think it's weird.

i always find mumsnet fascinating as what we each consider normal, is actually completely odd to other people.

Why would you not hold hands with your partner in bed? Not all the time obviously but do other people just sleep side by side and not touch each other? Next you will be telling me you don’t spontaneously cuddle your partner or have a cheeky snog when the mood takes!

2017SoFarSoGood · 05/09/2026 22:07

@DanaScullysLegoHair that makes me so sad! Please don’t give in to the small minded as long as you don’t feel unsafe. This makes me so bloody angry for you both.

Calling someone sweet is no worse than the unpleasantness you are spewing out. Criticising others for showing each other affection.

🤮 Fuck me some people on this website are thundercunts

Do you have sensory issues? That’s an extreme reaction.

Threat28 · 05/09/2026 23:28

I had an ex who’d swap our hands if he needed to use one to do something. I hated it so much and vowed I’d never do it again.

I might very, very rarely hold DP’s hand walking home after a night out, or sitting together on the sofa, but I am very pleased he’s not keen.

I was at a restaurant this week and a couple were holding hands over the table between courses. No need.

Loghabit · 05/09/2026 23:29

We hold hands in restaurants, walking, at home watching tv. I love feeling his physical closeness - 28 years of it and still want him close by. As we get older people comment - oh you guys are so cute! We’re not cute - we are just us.

Kickinthenostalgia · 05/09/2026 23:31

I’m not a fan for myself, no issues with others doing it. I hate hugs too 😂

TheCoolTiger · 06/09/2026 00:11

GiveMeWordGames · 05/09/2026 08:49

This is awful and makes me so angry/sad for you that we've started going backwards on this.

Nothing to do with the massive increase in the Muslim population?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/09/2026 00:26

I haven’t had a partner in years but it’s not something I like to do so don’t miss it. I find it irritating when people take up too much space in the street because they just won’t ‘let go’ of each other. As for those that walk along with arms around each other. Ugh. It makes me feel suffocated just looking at them!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/09/2026 00:33

@TheCoolTigerthe poster @DanaScullysLegoHairspecifically said it was down to right wing people, so not sure why you mention Muslims?

Almost always - whether that be walking or across the table at restaurants...

I wouldn't say it's "weird" but I think it's noticeable to people who don't (if that makes sense).

We've had comments in the past from other couples asking if we are recently married - and on holiday someone asked if we were on honeymoon 🥳! We had been married about 10 years at that time!

One time someone commented that we looked like we were the only people in the room as we were talking, laughing and smiling at each other. 🤷 I did look around the restaurant that time and there were a lot of couples not talking and looking grumpy.

Sometimes, the staff in restaurants have left us alone as they said they "didn't want to disturb a moment" 😁

So I'd actually call it "normal".

I think some people on this thread are so emotionally constipated- they treat marriage like a hostage negotiation.

They shake hands before getting into bed, retreat to opposite sides of the mattress like prisoners in adjoining cells, and only acknowledge their spouse’s existence again at breakfast.

Sex is presumably conducted in complete darkness, missionary position only, under strict instructions not to make eye contact, make noise, or accidentally experience a human emotion.

So the idea of holding your husband’s hand while falling asleep is clearly scandalous 😂

God forbid any couple has a romantic night out!

Next thing you will be saying is couples should not talk when out to dinner- far too intimate and performative!

Wait until they hear that we still kiss and cuddle each other….AND WE’RE PENSIONERS!!!

Yes, according to many on this thread thats highly performative and immature!

HappyAsASandboy · 06/09/2026 08:19

I wouldn’t perceive you as weird at all!

I am envious of couples who are close enough to want to hold hands!

Loghabit · 06/09/2026 09:08

And we always cuddle up on the sofa, every single evening - not if we have company and when they leave it's always really nice to snuggle up again.
