Couples who Hold Hands

I’m interested in other people’s views on couples who walk around holding hands.

Do you and your partner do this?

We do, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really see others doing it and wondered if we’re perceived as a bit weird.

OP posts:

No. Never. I can for about 5 minutes then it gets uncomfortable

whiteroseredrose · 05/09/2026 13:19

Just thinking, I don’t know any couples that do. Not friends, nor my parents or PIL. Nor grandparents.

I'm far too old and perimenopausal for that. If I'm not hotter than an oven I'm sweating more than someone who's just completed an ultra marathon in the Sahara desert

Poor guy's lucky if he gets a hug

I don’t think the odd hand hold is weird at all.

Constant hand holding is. There’s a couple in their 60s in our village who constantly walk around the village holding hands. It makes me wonder whether they’re either highly dependent or there’s a control thing going on. I mean, I’ve never seen them together and not holding hands and it’s just really strange to me.

@Disturbia81 never been cheated on. Married 30 plus years. 4 grown children. Love my husband. We just don’t hold hands in public! Is that so odd?

YourOliveBalonz · 05/09/2026 13:34

I think past a certain age it’s less about love, and more about a little extra stability to avoid a fall!

When I see this I assume they haven’t been together all that long 😂 I hold hands with my newish partner, it’s nice.

Almost 40 years together, always hold hands ❤️

Maybe that’s us! 😂😂😂 no controlling behaviour here!

Yes, it's odd- your relationship must be quite distant. 😂

I think you might be right 😉

It would never have occurred to me to think people holding hands is performative but even if it is… why care?

hourspassed · 05/09/2026 14:00

DH and I have been together over 30 years now and do sometimes hold hands, usually if we're on a date or on holiday and strolling around going for dinner. We also reach across (from his chair to my chair!) and hold hands for a few moments now and then when we're at home.

Otherwise no we don't hold hands when we're going for a walk or general day to day stuff and we certainly don't link arms! The main reason being that it is just not practical as DH has zero coordination and also short legs, whilst mine are long (we're a similar height) and I take much bigger strides than him. He's like a child being dragged along. So, no, not great for us! 😂

Somethinintheway · 05/09/2026 14:01

@marbIehalls this is a lighthearted thread I think. No reason for knickers to get twisted. It’s ok to hold hands, it’s ok to not hold hands. Who cares? Yes it’s irritating for some of us but it doesn’t keep me up at night. No need for personal comments 🤷‍♀️

🤣 you've spent this entire thread making rude, personal, vitriolic comments about couples who hold hands so not sure why you suddenly dont like it when its directed at you?

I can only speak for my experience, but the couples I know who are hung up and prudish about holding hands and physical affection in general are all now divorced - a lack of affection is not great for a marriage 🤷‍♀️

Shodan · 05/09/2026 14:23

DP and I do, sometimes. He runs very warm though, so not for long in summer. Also his hands are huge, almost twice the size of mine, so I feel a bit like a toddler holding its parent's hand!

It's great in winter though- i get chilly fingers very quickly and he can completely enclose my fist in his hand to warm them up.

And we generally only do it on 'out in nature' style walks, not in busy shopping centres.

DeeferDogg · 05/09/2026 14:24

I think that poster is projecting because they are alone and bitter. Probably been cheated on.

What a nasty thing to say.

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/09/2026 14:25

My mum and dad held hands for all 64 years of their marriage.

This is so sweet! I saw an elderly couple yesterday holding hands.

It warmed my heart ❤️

BananaPeels · 05/09/2026 14:27

All the time. Pretty much we always hold hands whilst walking down the street. Just natural to grab hands. We work really long hours and so I treasure any moment we get to be together honestly.

Summerunlover · 05/09/2026 14:47

We do but I am blind so it’s mainly because he is guiding me, which is always fun after an argument!

Yeah this. Like a few other posters I find it weird, (when I see an adult couple holding hands...) And it seems a bit performative if they always do it. And I'm not being vitriolic, I haven't been cheated on. and I am not sad and bitter. I could hold hands with my DH if I wanted to, but I don't want to. He's not fussed either way.

I find it hugely restricting and uncomfortable to walk around holding hands with my DH, (or to sit there doing it,) and I think it's a bit odd to hold hands all the time. There's a couple on Gogglebox who hold hands all the time they are on the screen. (Can't remember their names but I think the man is called Ronnie.) It makes me cringe and I don't know why they do it.

Unless there are particular circumstances (like one of you has a disability,) I don't think anyone needs to be holding hands with someone else all the time. That is just my opinion (which the OP asked for) before I get jumped on.

Fully aware my opinions will get shade, but I won't be changing my mind. I think couples holding hands all the time is weird.

@Lavenderandsunflowerfields I don't want to derail the thread but we stopped doing it as it is really jarring to get a comment when we're just out and about, minding our own business. It puts you on edge and spoils things and I'd just rather not feel that way.

It is lovely that younger women feel comfortable doing it and I hope they don't experience the same thing. I am in my mid 40s, my Fiancee is in her mid 50s, whether this makes a difference or not is hard to say.

Maybe. That's a real shame though for you both. I can see how that would totally spoil the vibe.
