Couples who Hold Hands

I’m interested in other people’s views on couples who walk around holding hands.

Do you and your partner do this?

We do, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really see others doing it and wondered if we’re perceived as a bit weird.

God forbid any couple has a romantic night out!

Next thing you will be saying is couples should not talk when out to dinner- far too intimate and performative!

Ah come on, why do you need to hold hands over a table? A meal takes an hour or two. There is no need, the restaurant knows you’re together without you needing to be performative about it.

I’m more intrigued by why you’re monitoring another couple’s hand holding throughout an entire two hour meal. I can’t imagine having that much spare attention to devote to strangers having a romantic meal together.

Such weird, obsessive behaviour

Calling someone sweet is no worse than the unpleasantness you are spewing out. Criticising others for showing each other affection.
🤮 Fuck me some people on this website are thundercunts

Oh the irony!

That made my LOL too. #IRONYALERT! 😂

There was about four inches between our tables. I am blessed with sight, you see.

We hold hands because it feels nice, it feels connected. But I can see why you think it's performative given you think we might be worried about the restaurant's thoughts (we aren't).

Did they notice you looking at them all evening?

The restaurant ie. the other people eating there who find it odd to be sitting in a public space whilst people demonstrate that they’re in a relationship with each where they’re so in love that they can’t resist touching each other for an hour.

Also people who hold hands in shops. You’re blocking the aisles and it’s incredibly irritating. And please stop bringing your husbands to peruse the women’s underwear with you, and stop asking them to sit outside the women’s changing rooms.

PrettyLittleRose · 06/09/2026 12:31

Well said @Threat28 Do people not realise that they can be a nuisance with their performative behaviour?

Of course not, they are too in love with each other. They must touch and show everyone their need to touch. Because they’re very in love. They’re a couple.

Mammyloveswine · 06/09/2026 12:35

Always hold hands, my ex husband used to recoil when I tried to hold his hand and it made me feel so sad! My partner now is so affectionate and it’s just lovely! We hold hands, snuggle on the sofa, touch others arms etc it’s just lovely feeling so “together”

It’s so annoying.

I HATE it when they’re in shops and the man starts stroking the woman’s hair or stares into her eyes pushing her hair behind her ears. It’s all lovely that you’re in love, probably in a way no one else has ever been, but some of us just want to throw some stuff in a basket and go and you’re unnecessarily clogging the place up.

To be fair that tends to be younger people so hopefully it is a trend that will disappear.

Yes, I agree you certainly seem more invested than they are, that’s for sure.

DeeferDogg · 06/09/2026 12:37

I don't mind if couples hold hands (unless on duty) or not. Probably don't even notice. But don't kid yourself you're more in love with your spouse than those of us who can enjoy a restaurant meal or a walk without holding hands.

We're good thanks.

You’re very defensive of a couple you don’t know 😂. It’s just a Mumsnet thread.

And you seem remarkably bothered by something that has absolutely nothing to do with you. 😂

4” between your tables?!! Good heavens, try somewhere a little more upmarket!

DH and I do sometimes. When we need to stick close in crowded places. And often just because it’s an extension of our intimacy. It’s like my DH gives me a kiss in the morning and throughout the day.

It’s a small restaurant which has been opened by a winner of Masterchef. It was a nine course taster menu, and so the tables had been split into tables of two and the whole place sold out in minutes.

It was extremely good food and good on the chef for making a go of his talent and skill as a business. It was quite an intimate, relaxed feel given the restaurant is small and the tables inevitably close together, and I think it’s a bit shit to suggest that someone getting started in business and following his dream is running somewhere ‘downmarket’ because the tables were close together.

I don’t give a fuck who is looking, it’s not performative. When we’re together we barely notice who is around us, we just want to touch in that moment.
Sooooo bitter 😂
