Couples who Hold Hands

I’m interested in other people’s views on couples who walk around holding hands.

Do you and your partner do this?

We do, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really see others doing it and wondered if we’re perceived as a bit weird.

I think past a certain age it’s less about love, and more about a little extra stability to avoid a fall!

Not even past a certain age. I am hypermobile and will often take my husband’s hand or arm if the path gets tricky.

GiveMeWordGames · 05/09/2026 15:55

Where did this "all the time" thing come from? DH and I hold hands often, but not ALL THE TIME as if we're superglued together or something!

MrsLFii · 05/09/2026 15:55

So now holding hands is infantile, performative and insecure? 😂 mumsnet is bonkers!

All the time. Pretty much we always hold hands whilst walking down the street. Just natural to grab hands. We work really long hours and so I treasure any moment we get to be together honestly.

Beautiful 🖤
How a couple should be.

FeliciaFancybottom · 05/09/2026 16:27

Yes, our hands just automatically go to find each other. When it's been too hot to go to sleep snuggled up, we've been holding hands instead.

Well, I said I personally found it infantilising, but that’s
my experience of someone holding my hand, not my opinion of anyone else’s decisions about handholding.

Then my post wasn’t really aimed at you 😊

seahorsessky · 05/09/2026 17:00

Yes, as long as it's not getting in the way (say on a narrow path). And some people do it for health reasons, eg one might have balance issues.

This is so sweet! I saw an elderly couple yesterday holding hands.

It warmed my heart ❤️

Even today. Dad is on palliative care and mum is still holding his hand. They hold hands because they love each other. Nothing controlling, weird or childish. They have just loved each other for 66 years(married 64) I don't think many people find what they have that lasts so long.

Have added a photo from today - have made it sensitive if you don't want to view it.

Assuming it is not because of one person's limited sight, or some frailty. I think it is either a fairly new relationship, or one where the couple before they met each of them thought they might always be single.

BuildingAccess · 05/09/2026 17:27

No and we have been together for 20 years. I think I would like it the odd time but we haven’t since our dating days. I’m unsure if it’s a good or bad thing.

Whoops75 · 05/09/2026 17:30

Strolling yes
exercise walking no

Also watching Tv and in the car I put my hand on his leg.

Minnie798 · 05/09/2026 17:40

No, I hate hand holding, It makes me feel restricted.

I’m so sorry about your dad @Pieceofpurplesky - but I’m so glad your parents found each other and had such a wonderful relationship ♥️

Sorry, I think it’s performative. Does my head in. Young people, fine. Middle aged people, ugh

People get one life and they should show affection to their other half however they damned well feel like doing.

I hate this ageist shit that tells women what length hair they should have and whether they are too old to hold their partners hand.

I love the photo you uploaded, something very precious ❤️

Most people live a lifetime and never have what your parents have, they are very lucky xxx

i don’t need someone to stop me wondering off and I don’t need to be constantly attached. It’s just nice for some people. What a strange way of looking at it

Not strange to me - or plenty of others on this thread, clearly.

MadameLaLa · 05/09/2026 18:16

I’d love to, but it just attracts weird stares because I’m a woman, in my 50’s with my wife.

Momager1234 · 05/09/2026 18:18

My main issue is couples who hold hands walking through the town on busy streets or in shops...other people have to navigate round and it's selfish...we hold hands on the beach, at home, on strolls outside

I was talking with an elderly couple turned out they had been married 60years and as they were leaving they took each others hand.
I thought it was a lovely thing see.

The starers are weird not your DW and yourself.

Sometimes we do unless the dogs are pulling us. Never thought too much about it. I also hold hands with my teenage children a lot - away from their friends! 😆. We recently walked over Brooklyn Bridge, all four of us holding hands. My son always has his arm around me or his dad. I often hold hands with my husband in bed.

I read that and thought, that's so cute. 💕Nice to read and hear of something so sweet.

I dislike this ageist shit that says it's "sweet" when an elderly couple hold hands. It's patronising - old people aren't a separate species.

Good point! I had just seen a few posts discussing older couples doing this and thought it’s probably got nothing to do with romance, performative or otherwise. Although actually what could be more romantic than making sure your partner doesn’t stack it, I take that back!

EmmaB1309 · 05/09/2026 20:39

OH and I don’t really, maybe occasionally. Neither of us is particularly touchy feely. I don’t think it’s weird though, not at all.
