In and of itself
Why do people use that phrase, isn't "in itself" enough?

DontyMon I hate the singular trousers or red lip etc... It's trouserS, lipS. I also hate the Americanism of math for mathS. I find myself sounding like a snake hissing the s sound as I add it to words. The dreadful gotten has crept into our language too, even the newsreaders are saying it.
I still cringe at messaged someone. I haven't a clue what Messager is and I still think I emailed, I rang, I texted soandso sounds better.

See also "begs the question" which does NOT mean provokes the question.

I always think batshit sounds an inarticulate form of dismissal. If you disagree with something, at least be explicit. Also it is mostly used in place of the word batty, so is just an excuse to add a foul ending.

I quite like "nailed it" because I think it usually kind of ... nails it.

Begs the question - used so much, even on the BBC! I understand it should mean that there is no need for the question... perhaps you can articulate better Calliopespa?🤔

I don't say lunch! The correct order is breakfast, dinner (middle of the day), tea (evening meal), supper (snack before bed) And the word brunch makes my toes curl.

Messenger is a very widely used messaging system so the term messaging someone is here to stay.

Sorry it's

Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner
Snack - never Supper!

Tea is a drink! I still remember the first time I went to a friend's house at the age of 5 and being asked what I wanted for "tea". I was bewildered and said I don't drink tea and her mum couldn't stop laughing.

Supper to me is what they call an evening meal in the likes of Downton Abbey.

'Pound' instead of 'pounds'. As in, 'it cost five pound'.

Thesummer - I presume you are a southern because up north we say it correctly as breakfast, dinner, tea and supper.

One just popped up today.
“Tell me you are ….. without telling me you are …..”.
Meaningless.
Im a member of a Facebook group for a small holiday island. Someone said they struggled to find their accommodation as their phone maps wasn’t working. Someone responded ‘tell me you are a tourist without telling me you are a tourist’. Okay Sherlock. What a pointless waste of words.

And mile instead of miles. It's five mile away. DH and his family all do this, not sure if it is regional (they're from the West Midlands).
