Cringe Phrases

In and of itself
Why do people use that phrase, isn't "in itself" enough?

Er...now?

And the personification or anthropomorphising of objects on social
media - ‘she’ when describing clothes, shoes, bags…it’s so infuriating.

Thesummer · 30/08/2026 22:00

Unpack - "there's a lot to unpack here"

Eyeing up/got my eye on - used so much on S&B here and it really irks me but I can't explain why.

Not a phrase but I'll add it anyway since I've seen it about 3 times today alone and it can't be a typo - ChatGBT! Where the hell has the B come from? Can people not read? I actually had to Google whether it was an alternative AI thing to ChatGPT that I wasn't aware of!

UnintentionalArcher · 30/08/2026 22:04

Agree with so many on here.

Spill the tea - a seemingly relatively recent alternative to spill the beans

Picky bits/picky tea (absolutely rage-inducing, wrong in so many ways)

Could of, would of, etc. (I’m sympathetic to many malapropisms but this one is so obviously wrong when written down - where could ‘of’ possibly come into it?!)

We’re pregnant. No, man, you absolutely, 100% are not pregnant. Don’t you dare try to co-opt the pregnancy when you will never have to cope with the unbelievable amount of shit that comes with it. I couldn’t be with a man who thought this way.

Making things a question? When they’re not? It’s especially infuriating when they end with no, no? - This seems prevalent on Mumsnet as a way of passively-aggressively flattening an opinion the poster disagrees with. Appalling.

Two phrases I see on here a lot and hate are ‘boils my piss’ and ‘lost my shit’. They’re so vulgar and horrible.

Oh my goodness, yes. I just remembered another one. It makes me cringe when people say - “you can’t polish a turd”. Disgusting.

HexInductionHour · 30/08/2026 22:30

@SilkorSatin its quite apt at times though, and used by Alex Polizzi 💩

I must admit that I rather like that phrase - it's very appropriate indeed in some scenarios!

mumumental · 31/08/2026 00:11

It “itches my tits”. Seen on here. Utterly gross and not as impressive as any speaker might think.

Musntapplecrumble · 31/08/2026 06:47

And...when people say "out the house", as in "She went out the house", "Just go out the house" etc must remind me of an outhouse 😆

A MN classic, “I can’t work out if you’re being obtuse”, “you’re being obtuse”, “there’s no need to be so obtuse”. No one uses the word obtuse in real life!!

I use it 🤣🤣🤣 guess I'm cringe, oh well.

Wookyhole · 30/08/2026 15:08

My boss asks “Do you have capacity?” instead of are you free / busy when another task comes in.

I'd be so tempted to reply with "Yes, I have mental capacity."

Yes! It was a very famous line on that show. 😅

Mh67 · 31/08/2026 07:52

I hate living my best life. How do you know its your best life. something incredible might happen tomorrow

Btc76 · 31/08/2026 08:19

FAFO

Btc76 · 31/08/2026 08:21

Lots of these really boil my piss and give me the ick

FaceEatingLeopard · 31/08/2026 08:23

'alot/abit' or any other such grammatically offensive nonsense

'In any way, shape or form' - there's two words too many there and it sounds so wanky.

Myself/Yourself - makes the user sound like they have rice for brains

Fifiesta · 31/08/2026 08:51

‘Meet-cute’, such a clumsy way of defining a lovely first encounter.

Manhattanman · 31/08/2026 08:58

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt 😬

Words · 31/08/2026 08:59

Can I get ….eeewwww
Owareyahallry?
Make a roast. No. You make a roast dinner. You cook steak and chips, you don’t make them.
Come over to mine
work colleague (tautology)
works do
All the corporate nonsense. ‘ Are you sighted on this red button issue?’ Eh? ‘Reach out’ is also a particular abomination. I used to run courses teaching people not to use this sort of silly language.
So very many of these now.
I also agree with the over inflation of language - I suppose it is meant to impart a sense of urgency and importance when it actually just sounds daft. Grabbed, ( picked up, collected) smashed, ( won, got drunk) blown up ( developed a minor fault) and so on.
Emails beginning ‘ I hope you are well’ . Those ones usually end with ‘ if I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.’

SDRock · 31/08/2026 09:03

My bad.

I hate this, especially when it's used instead of an apology for a mistake.

sugarandcyanide · 31/08/2026 09:16

I use a lot of the work ones 😬I say end of play and moving forward a lot. I hate reach out though. I often start emails with hope you're well as I feel rude jumping straight into a request!

My particular hate is when people use 'best' as a sign off. It doesn't even mean anything! Or people that use your initial to address you instead of your name and sign off 'BR'. Like you're pretending to be so busy that every nanosecond counts!

I don't even know if this is done anywhere else but it seems to have become a thing where I work and it irritates me so much!

CeliaCanth · 31/08/2026 09:42

Clothing that “hits at the hip” or “hits mid-calf”. I don’t want to be assaulted by an item of clothing, thanks.

“Imma” meaning - I think - “I’m going to”. Speak properly.

“Midaxi” dresses. Sound vaguely mechanical as well as being annoying.

parkezvous · 31/08/2026 09:46

I’m confused… usually when someone hasn’t heard the outcome they wanted. Urgh

Yes, I've had emails signed off with 'Best' before their name and it annoys me so much as well.

If they're going to use a random adjective that makes no sense whatsoever, why not do the same? I'd go with something like 'hermetically', 'post-modern' or 'anti-clockwise' !
