My pet hate:

"I was today years old when I learned that [insert pointless fact here]"

I get irritated by people using ‘n’ instead of and. Also people saying dinner when they mean lunch.

Messaged! No you rang someone or texted them you didn't message them. Calling everyone hun!

Messaged is just generic for texted/whatsapped/DM’d etc though when it doesn’t matter to the person you are talking to. I use messenger quite a lot so that is definitely messaged.

See also "begs the question" which does NOT mean provokes the question.

I always think batshit sounds an inarticulate form of dismissal. If you disagree with something, at least be explicit. Also it is mostly used in place of the word batty, so is just an excuse to add a foul ending.

I quite like "nailed it" because I think it usually kind of ... nails it.

I also have a particular image of the sort of poster who loses their online temper with an inarticulate FFS!!! in shouty capitals at the slightest provocation (usually not agreeing with someone else's view).

Can I add "pass agg" when used for anything anyone does that they didn't want them to do, and misuse of the word "abuse."

A PP has raised ‘begs the question’ as routinely misused. Another is ‘the exception proves the rule’, which manages the remarkable feat of being wrongly used by many and wrongly ‘corrected’ (as supposedly meaning ‘testing the rule’) by lots of others.

This isn’t a thread about folk etymology, so I’ll leave it at that, and just say that bogus word and phrase origins, and therefore often bogus meanings, are a horrible plague.

'Meet-cute' is horrible! 😖 First heard this in the film The Holiday. I LOVE the film, but hate this silly saying.

I get irrationally annoyed by people writing 'abit,' 'alot,' could of, should of, and using their/there, and to/too etc incorrectly.

Constant grammatical errors and bad spelling from grown adults really piss me off. I see women in their 40s and 50s on Facebook writing shit like 'ARE grandson Kayden got player of the week in the football this week. He could not of done it without his grandad elping him.' FFS Janet, you're 48, why are you spelling and writing like this?! Come ON. I think for the most part it's just laziness.

I hate it when people say (at Christmas) that they're going to 'trim the tree,' meaning to decorate it. Trimming is shaving/cutting something off something, so trimming the tree sounds stupid (to me.)

I always feel a bit mean disliking "thank you SO much" because I know they are trying extra hard to convey gratitude, but it does come across as gauchely OTT.

Guilty! 😬I'm a grown woman and I find I make a lot of typos when typing on a keyboard. I am fairly accurate when handwriting. In particular, I don't seem to have developed a proper method for typing punctuation when in a hurry. It's less laziness for me than lack of skill, then lacking the time to check and recheck.

Gently. As if adding that makes anything that follows acceptable and kind. I always imagine it said with a faux concerned head tilt. "Gently, OP, you sound like a total arsehole with a face like a horse"

Also all the Jamie Oliver casual cooking words- throw, pop, bung, whizz. So many posters just throw something in the slow cooker in the morning, then just pop some pasta in a pan to go with it before they bung it on the table. Sounds so affected.
