I’m watching A Place In The Sun

On C4 right now.

I have this on most days cos I love seeing all the apartments. One thing is bugging me though. The apartments that have swimming pools whether private or shared with several other properties NEVER EVER have a single soul using them. It’s always a picture perfect view of a pristine pool, nobody laid on a sun lounger, no noisy kids splashing about, nothing!
I’m assuming that the camera crew must chase everyone using the pool area out of the way so they can get the perfect picture postcard shot.

I do realise there are bigger problems going on the world 🙈 but it’s just a little peeve!

That always cracks me up. They are standing in the standard open plan living space and say ooh yes there's room for a sofa bed there. Ffs how many people are you planning to fit in that??

But despite all the joking on here I do actually love the show I watch it every day.
I prefer the Spain ones especially around Estapona (in my dreams).

Laura has a Jo Whiley voice - always sound like they're smiling when they're speaking. Really irritating (miserable).

I never watch the Caribbean or Florida ones. Too unrelatable.

You could play and amazing drinking game to a place in the sun, I’m pretty sure we actually did this at uni:

any reference to drinking coffee or wine- drink
cheesy hand-holding - down in one
awkward stilted laughing at a generic bar - woops there it goes
a paltry offer below asking price - aaaaand pass out.

I think some people are not really moving and just want a stint on tv! Although a few make offers and seem genuine.

Yeah we did a version with soaps pick a charchter from whatever soap was on and everytime they appered have a mouthful

It’ll just be out of season and very early in the morning. If you hit most tourist hotspots at 6am you’ll find basically no one there so can get some decent footage. I haven’t watched it for years but used to really enjoy both this and Homes Under the Hammer - guilty pleasures!

That makes sense. I can’t believe I never realised that before. It is often raining and windy when they are there. I’ve always thought they are so unlucky with the weather. 😮

I always roll my eyes at the "plenty of room for friends and family to visit".

Um no, there isn't. One spare room with barely enough space for a double bed, let alone anything else, isn't "plenty of room". If friends and family do want to come and visit they would most likely book a nice hotel/apartment nearby rather than stay in your tiny flat.

There are also the ones who find an apartment on the edge of an obviously expanding development and have a lovely empty space in front of it. I have been known to find myself shouting at the telly to tell them to ask about future development

Yep, the new developments are bound to become very built up over time snd they need to find out how to translate the laws with the development process to find out how much is going to be built near it.! I’m sure some are savvy , but many are not I bet and may get caught out.

I live in Spain and as a pp mentioned, the solarium is just an 'azotea' or roof for locals who hang their washing up there. The only time anyone spent any time on ours was during covid lockdown when we weren't allowed to leave our flats, even to exercise. They had an episode in the city where I live and the range of properties they showed was bizarre.

They do film during the winter as you can often see Christmas lights up and the locals are in full winter gear, despite the couple being in flip flops.

And what is the nonsense of 'wiggle room'?Surely the budget is the budget?

The ‘wriggle room ‘ is because they think it’s cheaper abroad and they can grab a bargain! Then discover those days have long gone and it’s all competitively priced..Often they have very unrealistic expectations I think. Unless you’re watching an older one.

We did exactly that. Went on holiday to Spain to stay with friends just after we had retired early and I had never been before and was honestly not bothered about going and bought a villa across the road from friends when we had been there for about 3 days. It just felt right.
Came back to UK and packed up our house and rented it out. Took what we wanted back to Spain 4 weeks later and stayed there for over 20 years.
As far as APITSun goes, they did film a couple of times near to where we lived (in the countryside) and the owners tidied up and left for a few days, paid for by production company. One was actually sold by the agents off the back of it.

Ha ha - there really are couples expecting miracles on very small budgets ! And then wonder why the flats are literally small boxes with pokey kitchens in uninspiring places - they were built to flog to suckers!

We used to have property near Torrevieja and those who owned top floor apartments also had "solariums" as part of the property. The Brits amongst them could be be easily identified because they fitted out the roof space with artificial grass, garden sheds, pergolas and fairy lights. Never actually saw anyone up there at all.

It depends. I have Spanish family who live in cities. They use the roof area as storage, hanging washing and sitting outside. If there is a nearby beach, then I don't suppose the roof will be used much.

Terraces are very popular though and flats with terraces are more expensive than those without and are used for sunbathng, keeping plants and are similar to how we use gardens in the UK.

My husband and I mostly watch it to be able to take the piss, the same as everyone else here! There are Dave and Marion - very strange people in our view - walking around this tiny, poky, hideously dated apartment overstuffed with dreadful orange pine, going on about how light, bright and modern it is. On the way in they said how lovely the communal pool area is, despite clearly not having seen any maintenance for decades. Followed up by the traditional 'what a view', when you can just about spot the sea by climbing on a chair and cricking your neck - it's a view of other people's poky apartments, you dozy twonk! We spend the whole episode shaking our heads in disgust and wonder if these people are leaving their brains at home when they leave for this trip.

I've tried to be generous about it. I wonder if maybe living somewhere very grey, cold and rainy skews their eyesight a bit, and what we see as rundown, cramped and overly touristy does indeed look bright, exotic and sophisticated to them. Just because it's very different to what they're used to and we're jaded by now. It's the only explanation I can find for some of the bollocks they spout.

PLEASE, I need your help, @Edgelands and others, can someone tell me what exactly it is that makes shorts tragic?

What's wrong with being a frock wearer?

I’m not that poster and I wear dresses myself, but when I was being rude about the people’s clothes earlier I was talking about specific kinds of dresses that seem to be over-represented among the female parts of the couples. Droopy curtain-y florals, off the shoulder I’M ON MY HOLIBOBS flounces etc.
