I’m watching A Place In The Sun

On C4 right now.

I have this on most days cos I love seeing all the apartments. One thing is bugging me though. The apartments that have swimming pools whether private or shared with several other properties NEVER EVER have a single soul using them. It’s always a picture perfect view of a pristine pool, nobody laid on a sun lounger, no noisy kids splashing about, nothing!
I’m assuming that the camera crew must chase everyone using the pool area out of the way so they can get the perfect picture postcard shot.

I do realise there are bigger problems going on the world 🙈 but it’s just a little peeve!

Channel 4 have hundreds of episodes available on demand. We love watching the ones from when it first started with Amanda Lamb. They were only half- hour episodes back then and the difference in the quality of the cameras is very striking.

I think Amanda Lamb was by far the best presenter. She would give really practical advice and they often had a glass of wine after almost every viewing. I think Jonny was very natural with the 'buyers' too.

These days it's so formulaic. Many things have already been mentioned such as holding hands. They also usually show the couple at home in UK looking through brochures, clinking glasses and giving each other a peck.

Property no.4 is always viewed without the presenter, after which they visit the expensive one. It's always orange juice whilst sat at a table of a seemingly empty bar or on a deserted beach. But the orange juice is not allowed to be drunk until the very end.

I think I may need to get out more!

I’m not that poster and I wear dresses myself, but when I was being rude about the people’s clothes earlier I was talking about specific kinds of dresses that seem to be over-represented among the female parts of the couples. Droopy curtain-y florals, off the shoulder I’M ON MY HOLIBOBS flounces etc.

Apologies, it was meant for @Dragonflyspeeding

what was that other daft programme think it was morning on BBC 1 where people went round the world some where like Australia or New Zealand. They were always looking to relocate abroad but it was the same thing, they looked at 3 houses they were always too small, no swimming pool etc regardless about the fact they had sod all of a house to sell in the UK. they then looked at jobs schools etc always had a good moan about that too

Yes, Amanda does stand out as one of the better presenters, along with Jasmine and Johnny. I also used to really like Victoria Hollingworth who presented for a few years in the noughties (maybe between Amanda and Jasmine?) but she suffered a broken back in a bad car accident during filming and never returned to the series.

Can't really say I like any of the recent presenters, i.e. Lee, Laura, Leah, Ben, Craig, etc. Danny and Jean were OK.

Laura does seem to set them up for a fall sometimes, showing them a property well over their price range and saying that the agents says they're open to negotiate around the top of the budget, but when it comes to the negotiation, several times offers at the top of their budget have been rejected!

Dragonflyspeeding · 28/08/2026 16:29

Property no.4 is always viewed without the presenter

Someone asked Jasmine why this is on her Instagram before and she said it was due to the time limit of the show.

“I could just see myself here of an evening with a glass of wine” will be said at least once per episode

Always. Or “coffee in the morning “

That doesn't make any sense to me at all. Am I missing something?

Uncontroversialusername · 28/08/2026 18:42

Probably that they have a limited window to get it all done and the presenter is off filming the ££££ house or doing their links/bits to camera.

madaboutpurple · 28/08/2026 19:28

A friend of mine had an apartment in Tenerife and she told me the service charge for the pool was the equivalent of a few thousand per year. The pool wasn't heated so it wasn't used much. She sold it last year as she isn't able to travel.

I used to like that one - was it called something like a place down under? They used to hold up cards to vote - you are so right though, they expected their 3 bed semi in Wolverhampton to get them a detached bungalow with pool in a decent area with jobs (lots of these places though I thought were a bit grim - barbed wire fences etc) and really expensive too!!

DetailRedacted · 28/08/2026 20:25

Yep it was A Place Down Under utterly compelling viewing but the folks taking part were deluded about costs etc —and just out for a free trip to OZ—

It was Wanted (or not) Down Under. With the annoying card twiddling at the end. It was always one parent driving it.

Yep, always one who really wanted to move and one who didn’t. The card twiddle was annoying wasnt it.

Yes, yes 😁

Also - 'lovely spot to sit out with a coffee in the morning'

Lol

Dilemma999 · 28/08/2026 20:54

All of the Spanish apartments look the same to me and are very uninspiring.

The kids had to vote too which was harsh when they had just watched the video from home from the Grandparents/Aunties/Uncles etc saying how much they are going to miss them all!
😥😥

Uncontroversialusername · 29/08/2026 13:25

What always strikes me with Wanted (or not) Down Under is that the houses may be slightly cheaper in Au/Nz $ than the equivalent in £ but also that wages seem to be the same proportion lower than the UK.

So the couple's house in Nottingham or wherever might be worth £250K but the house down under is only slightly less than that in dollars, say the equivalent of 230K GBP.

Dave's earning £35K as a plumber and Tracy's earning £20K part-time as a hairdresser or whatever but Down Under, Dave will only be earning the equivalent of £30K and Tracy £17K so it's going to be a struggle to even have the same lifestyle they have now, albeit with better weather,

omghereistrouble · 29/08/2026 13:47

i forgot the sentimental messages from home with the relative sobbing and saying we do not mind them going! used to make me tear up sometimes especially when it was a very old granny or grandad.
as for the card twiddling i know where i wanted to put them cards! the kids were influenced by the beach or wildlife i think not actually living there.

dysongirl · 30/08/2026 10:30

Im binging on Sun Sea and selling houses at the moment.
Who are they trying to fool with loads of storage space Karen.
When there clearly is not!
You can barely fit a single bed into most of the bedrooms 😂

Honeypickle · 30/08/2026 10:53

Another one for the bingo card - the standard joke about the fitted wardrobes: “well that’s good for all of MY unwise frocks clothes, I don’t know where Brian will put his though!! Guffaw guffaw!”

The orange juice also looks really nasty, is definitely the cheapest concentrate, and has clearly just been poured out of an unrefrigerated carton by a crew member to show ‘Hey, it’s a jolly breakfast meeting, but let’s not get carried away with token croissants.’

God knows why the whole thing remains so mesmerising. The apartments are almost always awful.

SwedishEdith · 30/08/2026 15:16

Watching a corker now on More 4. The couple are emigrating to Spain, so not buying a holiday home. Jasmine has introduced them to a traditional Spanish breakfast and the couple have never tried olive oil before. "It's a new one for us"😀

Dragonflyspeeding · 30/08/2026 16:15

Another one is ‘room for entertaining’. They are moving to completely new locations on their own, where they don’t know anyone. Who are they going to be entertaining so frequently that this is a dealbreaker?

AppleButterGutter · 30/08/2026 16:16

All of the current house design/makeover/moving programmes now have everyone enjoying tea/coffee/soft drinks at the end. Maybe so that the "thimble of sherry at Christmas makes you an alcoholic" MN brigade don't have to clutch their pearls in horror. Although I do believe that Phil and Kirsty still go to the pub at the end of LIOLI. I don't watch it that often - happy to be corrected!

You are so right about this. Just when did having a glass of vino or a beer become so NOT ACCEPTABLE 😂
