I’m watching A Place In The Sun

On C4 right now.

I have this on most days cos I love seeing all the apartments. One thing is bugging me though. The apartments that have swimming pools whether private or shared with several other properties NEVER EVER have a single soul using them. It’s always a picture perfect view of a pristine pool, nobody laid on a sun lounger, no noisy kids splashing about, nothing!
I’m assuming that the camera crew must chase everyone using the pool area out of the way so they can get the perfect picture postcard shot.

I do realise there are bigger problems going on the world 🙈 but it’s just a little peeve!

I just assumed as a lot of the locations are more residential that people aren't using the pool the way someone on holiday would. Never even occurred to me that they might ask people to vacate!

Everywhere always looks deserted, so I've always assumed out of season, or very early in the morning. But never mind the apartments, where on earth do they find the identikit couples? They're always lumbering along the beach holding hands, her in some unwise frock, him in a tshirt and tragic shorts trading remarks like 'Ooh, good-size bedroom' and 'We love a bit of nightlife'. You could swap nearly any one of them out for any other of them without the viewer noticing.

Unwise Frock😂😂

Uncontroversialusername · 27/08/2026 20:12

I bet they don't visit all the properties the same day either, some of them are an hours drive from each other. I reckon they're all told to wear the same clothes 2 days running for continuity (or buy 2 of the same unwise frock).

Ah, you know what I mean! Floral and unfortunate-looking. 😀

This programme and Escape to the Country both really annoy me.
A Place in the Sun annoys me because people generally want lots of space for very little money, do not speak the language and mostly appear to have minimal interest in integrating with the local community.
Apart from the fact that they are willing to spend a few pennies buying somewhere, how does that make them any different from migrants to the UK? Slightly less violent?
As for Escape to the Country...right you are a couple in your mid-60s, both overweight and are looking for a quirky property with acres of land. Sweeping generalisation here!
That's great, but how are you going to manage the stairs and the gardening? Plus points if you want somewhere remote, which requires at least one person to be able to drive. In addition everyone wants to be within walking (staggering) distance of a pub.
Apologies for the grumpy old lady outburst, but seriously?

The thing that always bugs me about the apartment viewings is that they never mention the service/maintenance charges. I imagine with some of the places with lovely pools and gardens they might be very high and out of the budget. 🤷‍♀️

2026letsgo · 27/08/2026 20:21

Danni wore a dress I have on an early episode. I used to wear it to parties and NYE. She wore it to show midlanders poky flats in Alicante.

I certainly do
And it never flatters her figure either 😂

SwedishEdith · 27/08/2026 20:29

I hate the way the female presenter is nearly always in completely inappropriate footwear for the viewing. Teetering on high heels while on the beach or showing them round a top floor apartment with stairs to a roof terrace.

They often pull out of the sale 'on return to the UK'. I'm assuming this is after receiving the contract along with details of the sink fund of the development and structural issues.

The presenters (most of them are absolutely lovely) look disappointed when they don't proceed with the sale as if they are personally losing sales commission.

Edited

To be fair Danni and Scarlett always looked like they were going to a nightclub instead of tottering up tiled stairs to excfaim at the view, so I'm sure your dress was very nice and worked for NYE parties!

I’ve got a crush on Ben Hillman. He’s a natural in front of the camera and seems to be a lot of fun to be around. Not so keen on Jasmine. She gets really uptight when people aren’t liking her properties - I think if it was me I’d just say I liked it anyway so she didn’t start ranting about expectations and compromise…

LlynTegid · 27/08/2026 20:57

It may be pleasant to watch, but don't think it is in any way realistic.

I like her a lot, I think she's trying to manage their expectations.
Is Ben the one who loves the camera (which is just as well I suppose as he's in front of it).

Some things I've noticed on APITS:
*many of the couples hold hands the whole time, like they're glued together.
*sometimes they haven't even visited the area they say they want to live
*insultingly low offers that surprise, surprise get rejected
*female presenters wearing totally unsuitable footwear
*male presenter must wear a loud shirt
*they never mention the maintenance etc fees at the complex
*views of a scrappy barren field will be referred to as 'stunning'
*they generally don't have a word of the local language but say they want to learn (they won't)

They do wear the same clothes! I went to the A Place in The Sun roadshow a couple of times - and I heard that from one of the presenters on stage doing a live chat session. Continuity..

garlictwist · 27/08/2026 21:06

"Carol and Jeff have decided to buy a flat in Gran Canaria. They've never been to Gran Canaria but are putting all their life savings into a random place in a pokey village anyway".

And no one ever actually buys anything.

Greenlawnbrownlawn · 27/08/2026 21:07

The couples so often look bloody freezing as they stand on the deserted beach. All filmed at 10 in the morning in February I reckon.

And talking of popular phrases on the programme, "It's got a really Spanish feel"!!

Procrastination4 · 27/08/2026 21:08

I laughed when I read your post, @DetailRedacted as we also always comment on the fact that the pool is invariably empty when the clients are being shown around. I also have to admit that, when the clients offer a sum far below the asking price (their “cheeky offer”) giving the reason for same as “we’ll have a lot to do to it to make it to our taste”, I’m always hoping that they are rejected outright, that none of their later offers are accepted and that they’re left high and dry with nothing!🙈Am I evil?!

We want a pool and a sea view

for fifty quid

Hahaha yeah some of them are woefully unrealistic and incredibly negative. Ungrateful bastards 😂

I think they used to discuss the service charges - unless it was another similar show.

And the man will put his hand into the small of his wife's back when going through a doorway and push her forward.. So many do that!

Yes to the eternal hand-holding! They always look like rather doleful toddlers trudging along together, hand in hand, across some unenticing greyish beach saying ‘Ooh, nightlife!’ at some glum little strip of cafes.

EveningSpread · 27/08/2026 21:16

My favourite Place in the Sun happenings:

  1. Have a budget of £8.99 and want a 3 bed near the beach, with a pool..
  2. The kitchen is not big enough for the large couple to stand in.
  3. Aggressively low-balling the seller.
  4. Asking for the furniture to be included - another hint about the tightness of the budget.

There was a woman recently who had mobility issues and couldn’t climb stairs yet didn’t like lifts, and neglected to say she wanted a ground floor apartment.

There was a woman once whose boyfriend disappeared half way through filming, then it turned out she couldn’t make an offer cos she hadn’t sold her own house yet. Brilliant!!

SwedishEdith · 27/08/2026 21:21

I like Jasmine. I also like Jean Johansson. She always manages to show her pissedoffness at the time wasters in a cheerful side eye way.

Who would you like to get if you went on it? I think I'd love Lee Juggurauth for his amazing Leee John Imagination outfits 😀
