Partner unhappy with my outfit choice for a warm barbecue

So im Currently at a bbq with friends, only a few i dont know.
Its really quite warm and sunny, what i would call beach weather. My DP has quesgioned my chice of clothing on this paricularly warm day which consists of denim mini skirt and a close fitting crop top, its alittle sheer with diamantee style lettering to the front.
In heat like this i would normally be in a bikini in the garden.
I think hes well out of order

What does the top say?!

there’s a time and a place for different clothes, maybe that’s all he meant.

If you’ve got it flaunt it. It’s warm as fuck anyway. I’ve been dressing in things mumsnet would considered scandalous all summer - I don’t know how many perky tit years I have left so I want to enjoy it!

Bit weird to comment, does he normally police what you wear? Are his mates a bit pervy? That’s the only thing I can think of. My husband has an uncle and the first time I met him DH warned me and said he’s a bit of a creep so maybe put a cardigan on - the only time he’s told me what to wear in almost 10 years and tbh I’m glad he warned me lol.

Thankyou i am proud of my figure, well i have 2 compli.ents ok they are off men. They dont seem pervy anyway more interested on the bbq and beer i would say

Difficult to judge the outfit without a photo.

Lovelyview · 23/08/2026 16:36

Sounds fine to me. Life would be very dull if everyone wore the same style of clothes.

Pistachiocake · 23/08/2026 16:37

It is absolutely your choice. Maybe he's heard nasty comments/seen nasty things online about mums wearing "muttony" stuff-there seems to be a lot of spite against mums/anyone over thirty wearing things that some people think should only be worn by those young enough to have a Young Person's railcard.

Me, I say wear what you want! He might be worried about people taking your photo/shaming you online, but people who do that kind of thing are as pathetic as the ones who shamed mums for wearing floral dresses and white trainers, so tell him to ignore them!

Less is more sometimes. I wouldnt want to see blokes with their tops off either.

I would leave. Genuinely, unless it's at a beach or a swimming pool that's gross.

To be clear I mean the shirtless men. The OP's outfit is not something I would wear but it wouldn't bother me.

From the description it’s something I’d expect a teenager/young adult to wear, but without a photo is difficult to tell anyways.

It is a bit odd that you’re at a bbq posting on MN though.

Thanks i will have a talk to him later sounds like he got a bit jealous maybe when speaking to some of the men here

sounds cute! he sounds really lame. is he wearing an elegant three piece suit, or something?

i like the people in this thread who are apparently scandalised by a diamante top. they can go on wearing their chocolate brown and beige and thinking everyone catching sight of them thinks they look sophisticated--more like boring and lacking in personality.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 23/08/2026 16:40

Sounds like something my teenager would wear if I’m honest, but wear what you want.

notacooldad · 23/08/2026 16:41

How old are you 14?
She’s old enough to pick her own clothes. Don’t worry.
Doesn't mean to say she has picked wisely !

ReadingSoManyThreads · 23/08/2026 16:42

I'm getting the controlling and jealously vibes from him from what you've said. How long have you been with him? Has he displayed jealousy before too?

somanychristmaslights · 23/08/2026 16:43

Maybe just ignore him and get off your phone when you’re meant to be with your friends. I think that’s more rude than him making a comment about your outfit.

I wanted some asdurance now im questioning myself, on a sunlounger at the moment gauging if i should go home and dress for an evening what ever that would be

A couple of men have taken their tops off.

I don't think there's such a thing as inappropriate clothing at a "do" where that happens.

allthingsinmoderation · 23/08/2026 16:44

Sounds horribly tacky but it is entirely your choice what you wear.....

You are not really making sense. You said you are proud of your body etc and said you have had compliments. You’ve thanked people supporting you but now saying you might change even though others are in shorts etc. Now you are saying your partner might be jealous after talking to other blokes.. presumably because they have complimented you. I suspect you are just enjoying feeling good about yourself and are enjoying the attention.

Sidebeforeself · 23/08/2026 16:49

Posted too soon. There’s nothing wrong in feeling good about yourself by the way but I think you should own it rather than come across as a bit self pitying that you are getting attention

FourSevenFive · 23/08/2026 16:50

The combination of short skirt, short top and see-through fabric probably looks attention seeking.

It would be fine for a bar night, but it is a different kind of opportunity than a casual BBQ.

Hot weather doesn't matter, lose fitting t-shirt can feel calmer than tight top.

Going home and changing will make it a much bigger deal.

You can wear what you want.

does sound like the outfits the teens are wearing (except for the denim I suppose, nobody below 25 wears denim except for baggy jeans).
