Partner unhappy with my outfit choice for a warm barbecue

So im Currently at a bbq with friends, only a few i dont know.
Its really quite warm and sunny, what i would call beach weather. My DP has quesgioned my chice of clothing on this paricularly warm day which consists of denim mini skirt and a close fitting crop top, its alittle sheer with diamantee style lettering to the front.
In heat like this i would normally be in a bikini in the garden.
I think hes well out of order

Refer him to Dolly. “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap”. :-) wear whatever makes you happy and enjoy the bbq!

Disliking an outfit doesn’t equal jealousy, why would it. And if the OP has a supermodel figure then good for her, she can have her pick of amazing outfits!

I really hate the assumption on here that if you dislike denim mini skirts and cropped tops it's because you're jealous.

I really, really dislike denim mini skirts and cropped tops. I disliked them even when I was much younger and a size 6. I think Kate Moss' outfit is bloody awful. However if the OP and Kate Moss want to wear one, it has nothing to do with me, it doesn't impact on me, it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable and it's up to them.

Unlike the shirtless men at this bbq, which would make me leave the event. There's something horribly aggressive about that.

Curryingfavour · 23/08/2026 22:27

At your age I had 3 children, so at a hot BBQ I probably would have worn a little pair of shorts or a skort , some sandals or little tennis shoes and a t shirt that was a colour that wouldn’t show BBQ sauce 😂 when the kids inevitably put their sticky hands on me .
i think a denim mini skirt is fine

StorageUnit · 23/08/2026 22:32

I think these threads are bait, to bring out the pearl clutches and then the super relaxed ‘I’m out naked and no one should care or look ’ kind of post. Fact is, wear what you like but we all have our unique styles. For me personally when I was younger, I would wear outfits to suit the occasion and despite having a great figure (not now lol), I would wear something to a balance out the short and short/sheer and make one longer/baggier, to balance it out. But if short and sheer works in one go and it feels and looks comfortable/amazing, enjoy it, OP.

Appropriate doesn’t always need to be about the fit, or how much flesh it shows.

it could be this. This is the vibe I’m getting.

I saw a woman in (I’d guess) her early 60s the other week wearing a jumper that said ‘I don’t ride a bike but I do ride a biker’ in sparkly letters with a rhinestone harley davidson on it. It was utterly inappropriate and utterly fabulous in equal measure 😁

You aren’t getting it - it’s mutton dressed as lamb at your age 😂😂🤣🤣 something a 14 year old should be wearing not a middle aged woman!

Since when was 33 middle-aged?

Iroll · Yesterday 16:10

Tell him to mind his own business or you will put a bikini on! Has he ever questioned your clothing choices before?

Since when was 33 middle-aged?

It was 29/30 on a thread recently. Someone's daughter (23) was seeing a middle aged man

HereWeGo1234 · Yesterday 18:17

Maybe he just feels a bit uncomfortable because he thinks you’re showing more flesh than any of the other women?

PegLegJim · Yesterday 18:40

If you got it flaunt it. If you are happy wearing it, that's what matters

bananaobama · Yesterday 18:52

Sheer crop top?

sounds a bit tacky for a bbq

Men are in shorts , shirt. Tee shirt, a couple have taken t shirts off as its hot.
Women all have either skirts or skorts, blouse or shirt t shirt

Well, if its the sort of do where men take their tops off I think you're fine.

Well I’m 30 and I do wear denim mini skirts in summer, but not micro mini, only about mid- thigh or slightly above the knee. I just feel too exposed otherwise. But that’s just me. I also wouldn’t feel comfortable in something super short at a casual BBQ.

MumTeacherofMany · Yesterday 19:30

It definitely sounds more of a night out outfit then BBQ but each to their own

allgoodhere783 · Yesterday 19:37

Up to you OP. But you can't stop your partner feeling embarrassed either!

I didn't like one of my partners clothes so much that i threw it away lol XD

BCBird · Yesterday 19:37

Would a denim.skirt be cool?

JRM17 · Yesterday 19:48

Is anyone else in fancy dress or just you. Did they do a Bridget Jones on you and tell you it was 80s tarts and vicars themed.

She’s old enough to pick her own clothes. Don’t worry. You, her boyfriend or partner don’t need to decide for her 🙄. Like l say to my toddler twins “she’s a big girl…”

I think this whole idea that no one should ever comment on what someone else dresses like is bollocks really

If it’s a matter of personal taste I completely agree but the reality is some people just don’t have a clue. They don’t have a clue on the image they’re creating. They don’t have a clue that people are looking at them and forming opinions about them based on the way they dress which is something by the way that every single person does.

If her example OPs partner decided to go out to a Neighbourhood barbecue wearing paint splattered work shorts and a 15-year-old tatty T-shirt with deodorant stains I think it would be appropriate to say I don’t like the outfit you’re wearing. I don’t think it’s appropriate for where we’re going.

partner could then choose something else or choose to continue wearing what they’re wearing, but at least that point you would know that this was a choice and not a miscalculation.

I think if someone was wearing clothes that they didn’t realise it looked seriously inappropriate I would expect someone that cared about them to say that perhaps there would be something More appropriate that they could wear. Because some people just don’t have a clue And if they knew how they were perceived, they would be mortified

Askingforafriendtoday · Yesterday 20:01

I really feel for you OP and your DS1.
T1D is no small thing and he is at a tricky age, realising it's for life, taking risks like many of his age. If I were you I would contact the Diabetes Specialist Nursing team about your worries. I too wouldn't be able to enjoy my holiday. I think your children would understand

Yeah exactly at 33 i can do without the comments, not helpful

It sounds cheap but hey if you don't mind looking so go ahead. Your poor husband.

Sounds inappropriate and weird to wear to a casual BBQ..!

madaboutpurple · Yesterday 20:23

Your DH really should be pleased you can wear clothes like that.

This, exactly.

Very well said.

A sheer crop top? Can you see your bra underneath?
