Partner kicking off over “autumn decor”

inkyspells · 22/08/2026 17:06

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I enjoy decorating for autumn..nothing crazy just a few small candles /floral decorations and a nice candle.
Anyway partner told me I can’t put anything out till October.
i was in spare bedroom and seen a little candle “vanilla pumpkin” I thought oh il just put it on unit and maybe light it when it’s dark.

Partner just really kicked off
Its too early
looks stupid
I said October
You don’t listen
Not even joking either ,being really nasty about it

Anyway I’ve just put it back in the cupboard

Was I wrong to go against him and put the candle out ?
Even tho he said October

I just lit a candle in my downstairs loo and it's not even dark yet. It's also spring flowers which is either too late or way too early.

My husband doesn't care at all, neither that I've lit a candle or that it's wrong season. Why is yours bothered so much? Aren't there some bins for him to put out?

Not the point of the thread but do you really leave a lit candle in an unattended room?

Wexone · 22/08/2026 17:56

yes your partner is wrong to speak to you like that but agree is August but your right you can do what you want in your own house
here is south east of Ireland it was a bit chilly this morning but brightened during the day and ended up be 23 degrees. we ate lunch outside I was in a sleeveless top and kids were in shorts..they still playing outside. I detest this push to wish the year away. Halloween decorations pumpkins etc kids haven't gone back to school yet. life is short stop wishing it away enjoy what we have at the mo

HollyhocksandPeons · 22/08/2026 17:56

The only autumn (also doubling up as winter) decoration in our house is to change the curtains from summer ones to lined, heavier ones. I don't think I shall even bother this year, they are too heavy and don't really do much.

And lighting a candle in a room which is unsupervised is almost as daft as “decorating for autumn with a pumpkin shaped candle”.

DressOrSkirt · 22/08/2026 18:00

In Ireland we use astromical timing for seasons, so autumn is August, September and October here, and I have started decorating.
Either way, he doesn't get to unilaterally decide what decorations you can have in your house, and he spoke to you so rudely.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/08/2026 18:01

You're wrong because life is too short to be changing the decor every season.

NewFrock · 22/08/2026 18:02

In the downstairs loo, yes. It's a candle in a tin on a metal plate on a windowsill with no curtains. It can't fall over and there's nothing around it. We have a few guests so it's a regularly attended room. I wouldn't light it if there was nobody visiting. It makes the room smell nice.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 22/08/2026 18:02

He's a dick. Why does he even care when a candle is out?

TutTutTutSigh · 22/08/2026 18:03

My dp couldn't name the scent of a single candle in our house, struggling to believe this.

inkyspells · 22/08/2026 17:09

It Is just a candle rho
its not like it’s a pumpkin
just a scented candle

It’s still summer - hot weather, outside as much as you can . I always associate candles with dark winter evenings.

Comtesse · 22/08/2026 18:04

Who said he had veto power? Why are his views the most important? He sounds petty and overbearing and rude.

Nousernameideaaga · 22/08/2026 18:04

Get candle out of cupboard and put husband in cupboard instead

PersephoneParlormaid · 22/08/2026 18:05

It autumn here, trees dropping leaves and lots of spiders

Wait, you decorate for autumn too? Is this actually a thing?

Number1008 · 22/08/2026 18:07

I have my Halloween bedding on, throws and Halloween decor out! And waiting for my pumpkin spiced lattes from Starbucks ☕

DearDenimEagle · 22/08/2026 18:10

I’d be putting up a Christmas candle . It’s a candle. Design irrelevant. It’s going to melt away anyway. He is a bully and you need to stand up to him , or better still, get rid of him before he takes away all your self esteem and you’re trapped.

SerendipityCat · 22/08/2026 18:10

You've been posting about this delightful partner/husband of yours for quite a while now, and I can't recall a single positive thing you've ever said about him. He lies to you, he gambles his money away, he never wants to do anything with you, he ruined your honeymoon by getting pissed all the time and ignoring you, he was stroppy about you going shopping, and now he's having another nasty strop about a bloody candle, of all things.

I have to ask, what do you actually see in him? Does he actually bring you any happiness at all? I know we'll never see the full picture, but you've posted enough over the last few months to make me wonder what's keeping you with him.

mamaduckbone · 22/08/2026 18:11

It’s definitely early but there’s no need for him to speak to you like that.

SouthJersey1 · 22/08/2026 18:11

My DD put up her autumn a few weeks ago, and she puts up her Christmas tree when she gets home from trick or treating with her kids on Halloween night. It's all way too soon for me and I think she's crazy, but if it makes her happy, then why not? I think your DH sounds rather over-controlling. Put him on the spot and ask him if he wants a happy wife; if he does then does this one little thing really matter to him all that much?

.... equinox isn't until 23 September... So no, it is still astronomical summer.

Not sure where you got the idea that August is in astronomic autumn?

Gaelic autumn starts 1 August...is that the autumn you mean?

Uricon2 · 22/08/2026 18:12

If it helps @inkyspells I've got an autumn candle burning because it's much cooler, the light has changed and this is my incantation/spell against yet another blasted heatwave!

Mumtotornadoes · 22/08/2026 18:12

There's already Christmas decorations in the range.

Honestly it's not like you're decorating for Halloween, or Christmas. It's just "autumn" decor. And it's just a bloody candle. I have autumn scented candles out most of the year as I like the smells best

I always see August as autumn too.I don't decorate for the seasons per se, but the fleecy throws are back on the sofa backs as the evenings are cooler. It was still warm enough to lunch outside in Dublin today but I needed a light jacket.

NeatAquaScroller · 22/08/2026 18:14

Christ, he’d hate ours - we’re both very much alternative/gothy and I have many bits and pieces of “Halloween” decor which are a permanent fixture in our house!! Although my husband isn’t a c*ckwomble so it’s a non issue…

LlynTegid · 22/08/2026 18:15

If it is to represent Autumn then I agree far too early. Your DP might not have expressed it well but I agree with his sentiment.
