Partner kicking off over “autumn decor”

inkyspells · 22/08/2026 17:06

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I enjoy decorating for autumn..nothing crazy just a few small candles /floral decorations and a nice candle.
Anyway partner told me I can’t put anything out till October.
i was in spare bedroom and seen a little candle “vanilla pumpkin” I thought oh il just put it on unit and maybe light it when it’s dark.

Partner just really kicked off
Its too early
looks stupid
I said October
You don’t listen
Not even joking either ,being really nasty about it

Anyway I’ve just put it back in the cupboard

Was I wrong to go against him and put the candle out ?
Even tho he said October

You have several threads about him @inkyspells
It’s not a good relationship

bt1234 · 22/08/2026 17:32

How have you not left this awful person yet?
You need to read through all your threads and realise that decent men are not like this.
He is objectively awful

inkyspells · 22/08/2026 17:34

It hasn’t been great where I am
15 degree here today cloudy ,about the same yesterday as well

Nobody needs a partner who's nasty over absolutely nothing important.

Put all the stuff out again (even if too early) and tell him to f-off if he gets nasty again.

ShutupLwren · 22/08/2026 17:36

this is fucked up, you can decorate a Christmas tree if you want to without having him kick off. Is he normally a fucking prick?

napody · 22/08/2026 17:37

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 22/08/2026 17:10

Although it's not autumn it doesn't give him the right to talk to you like that. Who put him in charge. I'd be looking for my own place so I could put out whatever candle I like!

Absolutely.
"I said October"... WTF?! You wouldn't talk to a dog like that.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 22/08/2026 17:39

SausageRoll2020 · 22/08/2026 17:08

You are a bit wrong, as it's nowhere near autumn yet but you're not doing any harm.

The way you describe him speaking to you is seriously wrong and sounds controlling.

I think you have bigger things to worry about than candles OP.

Edited

I love autumn and I’ve started getting some bits and bobs out but I agree with this poster in that you have more to worry about than decorations. Your partner sounds a nasty piece of work big 🚩

cloudtreecarpet · 22/08/2026 17:40

It's your house too!
Light the candle if you want to!

As others have said, getting out and lighting a candle is not the issue here....

SewYellowLikeButter · 22/08/2026 17:40

Well while it’s August and I agree it’s too early he shouldn’t be kicking off in a nasty way about anything.

My husband would lightly tease me for this and then leave me to it.

GardenCovent · 22/08/2026 17:41

I hate autumn so on the candle part, just on my own feelings, I’d say it’s far too early, I want to hold on to summer for as long as possible BUT your partner is being ridiculous by the way he’s acting.
Totally over the top, nobody should speak to you like that

purpleflowersfordays · 22/08/2026 17:41

If my partner had demanded I’d put it away then I’d honestly get five out on display…don’t tell me what to do and all that.

I think he’s walking all over you and you need to fix that or leave…

WhatYouWearing · 22/08/2026 17:41

I suspect the OP knows that conversation had nothing to do with a candle

MintChocCat · 22/08/2026 17:42

Too early

Nellodee · 22/08/2026 17:44

Too early for autumn but not too early for divorce.

cloudtreecarpet · 22/08/2026 17:45

My ex was the same about cushions, moaned and moaned about us even having two on a sofa. We still did but he "hated them".

Lo and behold in the place he lives now, he has...cushions on his sofa.

It was never about the cushions, it was about him being an arse, liking to pick fights & be critical.

ElsiePiddockSkipsinherSleep · 22/08/2026 17:45

I remember your other threads. Why are you with this man? He clearly does not like you.

Sobriety78 · 22/08/2026 17:47

Who died and made him Lord and master of home decor - he'd have come home the next day and found the house ready for Halloween. But I'm petty with very little impulse control.
On a serious note he really shouldn't be talking to you like that - massive red flag. You need a serious conversation about your expectations regarding respect going forward, if hes like this over a candle is he going to overrule you at the big stuff?

TheBrunswick · 22/08/2026 17:47

There's no right or wrong with decor.
There's something very wrong with your horrible husband.
My dh may roll his eyes IF he even noticed.

Viviennemary · 22/08/2026 17:47

It's still summer. Why not get the Christmas tree out. I'd find this really annoying too.

Shelby2010 · 22/08/2026 17:49

You are going to have to post a photo of the candle.

Your DH is wrong to speak to you like that & dictate what you can & can’t do. But there has got to be a back story as my DH is unlikely to even notice a candle, let alone be able to designate what season it belongs to.

When you say you like to decorate a little, do you mean you regularly turn up with bag loads of seasonal tat for every occasion? How many times a year do you do ‘decor’? Eg Autumn, Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Spring & Summer?? More??

MoveAwaySausage · 22/08/2026 17:49

Do what you like. Get a Christmas candle if you want.

He’s overreacting.

kombuchabucha · 22/08/2026 17:49

I am frankly amazed your partner a) noticed and b) pgtook the time to read the label on a candle in your spare room. Mine wouldn't notice if I put a grand piano in the hallway.

NewFrock · 22/08/2026 17:51

I just lit a candle in my downstairs loo and it's not even dark yet. It's also spring flowers which is either too late or way too early.

My husband doesn't care at all, neither that I've lit a candle or that it's wrong season. Why is yours bothered so much? Aren't there some bins for him to put out?

Obeseandashamed · 22/08/2026 17:52

It’s a candle! He’s being a twat! FWIW, we had the reverse today as my husband wanted to light a candle and took out one of my ‘autumn/winter’ ones. I didn’t flip a lid, just told him that if he burnt it that I’d need to replace it so would prefer if he picked a floral/fresh scent instead.

NeelyOHara · 22/08/2026 17:54

ArabellaScott · 22/08/2026 17:13

OP it's your house and your life. You can put out pumpkins and candles in February if you so choose.

Is he often like this?

It’s his house too, maybe he hates the autumn decor?
