Husband's bad mood on holiday has made the whole trip miserable

Holiday ruined 😡 Arrived in the Lake District on Friday. All going well until yesterday we went to explore. DH moaned and rolled his eyes all day making it not a nice experience. Same again today when we went out. Moaned at DD because there were shops she wanted to visit. Said he was going to wait in the car for us. Didn’t come into any shops and instead waited outside in a mood. Went for dinner as a treat. He said his meal was horrible (ours was great) complained about the table next to us talking too loud. Complained all the way home because DD sat in the front and played her music, which I don’t mind. DD can’t sit in the back due to windy roads and travel sickness. Then he told her she was making it all up because she wanted to sit in the front seat. I’m the driver btw, DH doesn’t drive. She was mad that he said she lies about having travel sickness. Then he told her to not talk to her for the rest of the holiday. She’s in her room alone. You can cut the atmosphere with a knife. Worst thing is we’re here with his parents (who I love) but his mum is taking his side in all this. Me and DD just want to go home. We’re walking on egg shells. I can’t even look at him, he thinks he’s done nothing wrong. Seriously thinking about my future now 😞 Been together 23 years. DD is 19 and still (usually) loves coming on holiday with us. I’m so sad 😞

Bloody well good for you. Life is far too short to be unhappy ❤️

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 27/08/2026 21:28

Good luck OP 💐

Stay safe. I suspect his behaviour escalated the other day because he could sense he was losing control of you and domestic abuse is common when someone tries to end a relationship.

He doesn’t act like this at home mostly because he never comes out anywhere with us. It’s always just me a DD

He and his mum should go or you two have a discussion about how to reclaim the time left. Say your piece let him say his and try to hear each other without interruption and compromise (none of that is easy I imagine he will get defensive immediately!) but if you let him go first and listen maybe he will listen to you in turn? Men with their mums often act like ungrateful children, at every age. I have a feeling he wants to be up front because he’s (his own doing I’m sure, but still worth a mention) feeling like he’s the third wheel! (/neglected man child)

How has your daughter taken the news @TheLizardQueen ?

We haven’t had the discussion yet but I’m taking her to London for a few days tomorrow (just the two of us!) so we’ll have time to chat about it. I expect she’ll be devastated but she’s a bright young girl so she’ll handle it well I’m sure x

How did your daughter take the news? Sorry it’s a long thread but I think I recall you saying that they’re actually very close despite this disaster of a holiday @TheLizardQueen ?

How did he take the news?

DroopyEyelids · 03/09/2026 20:28

Has he always been like this? What drew you to him in the first place? Think it might be a good idea to see a solicitor to go over the steps in a divorce. You could find out who would be paying what and what happens with pensions.

But if you're the breadwinner not sure why you can't divorce?
Why are settling for this quiet life.... You only have the one and it sounds miserable...
Make the rest of it happier...

Hope the trip to London was ok @TheLizardQueen and that your daughter understands why you have to make this change.
