It is chilling that there are people on MN who are so utterly devoid of empathy and so full of hatred.

Sorry if I encouraged.this by saying that there should be more swimming lessons available to everyone. I didn't mean it to victim blame, it isnt even the case that it would have made a difference in this case at all. But it was in response to someone else saying that there had already been more than 30 deaths by drowning, so my point was you could reduce fatalities if more people had access to safe ways to learn how to swim. That's completely different to expectations for immigrants though.

I know what you mean, and yes it is depressing. But I think it’s also a case of them egging each other on into making ever more hateful comments. Most of them are pretty thick after all.

Ignoring the cruel plopper - the 3 victims have now been named

Sussex police named the victims as Hassan El-Khawas, 55, his partner, Zeina Alayn, 37, and their 14-year-old daughter, Sara El-Khawas. A younger girl who was also part of the family is in hospital in a critical condition. She has not been named.

I think your point is very important. Swimming doesn't seem to be taught at school anymore round here, and there are no free or even particularly low cost lesson options either.
I also think a water safety program would be useful in schools just prior to the summer holidays. I'll never forget two we had in the 70s one was about not playing on railways, the other was called "building sites bite". They gave me nightmares but did the job.

It would. But, usually what causes these family tragedies (I don't want to speculate in this particular case) is a child gets into trouble and the parents/other adults rush in to help and get into trouble themselves. No amount of safety training around deep water in the world will stop parents from entering water when a child is in trouble. It doesn't even have to be their own child. I don't know if it would have helped in the incident mentioned. But giving adults skills to swim, teaching them what to do to help someone drowning (often while that person tries to drown them in panic) and what to do when exhausted on the water can help. Even knowing how to float on your back when completely exhausted and that you can float can save lives as often people succeed in getting the child out of water and are then too tired to save themselves.

The problem is, there isn't as much access to public swimming spaces as there used to be so sometimes the only opportunity people get to swim is when they are on holiday, in the sea. Which isn't the best place for beginners to learn basic skills.

There was a water safety programme before the summer holidays in response to the previous drownings.

I had to simplify it and re do it with signs and symbols so it was accessible to our pupils.

My DC had swimming lessons at school - one term in year 4. That was it.

Fortunately they could already swim well because we had the means to pay for lessons, which they'd been having since age 3.5. By the time lessons hit, they could swim 400 metres at 3 strokes, swim underwater, dive in and pick a ring up off the bottom, snorkel with correct fin technique and float in a variety of ways. But that cost £££, and not everyone has that.

It’s really tragic, such an awful thing to happen. The sea is so much more dangerous than a lot of people realise. 😢

I do think we need to cut through with the message.

My ds is a swimmer as you and a good one. Our beach is fairly safe due to the geographical landscape but he is horrified when people are out paddle boarding with no boundary aid or out swimming to far or using inflatables in an offshore wind.

I think that’s the message that’s missing somewhere. He knows despite how good a swimmer he is the risks are still there and does all he can to negate them.

You didn't, some people are just absolute wankers who wouldn't know decency if they fell on it.

Open water is dangerous, treat it with respect, take precautions, check local conditions and remain vigilant. Even then, you can still be very unlucky.

My car passed it's MOT today and got a service - I never know why I panic about this, but I always do. My car is a symbol of freedom to get me to places. Buses should be the same as should railway travel.

Newsnight was a positive look overall about Andy Burnham, the discussion was measured and interesting views. An excellent brief about Trump as well.

They need a better hobby.
