Of course there are. It doesn't seem 5 minutes since women were to blame for their own rapes for not covering their bodies. Now they're to blame for the own deaths for possibly covering them too much.

As soon as they had released the details of the victims I knew the internet was going to be awash with this sort of evil crap. I do try to keep telling myself that most people are nice but we do have a worrying number of vile people in this country who are driven by the likes of Reflux.

We need to have more government funded swimming lessons for children that are widely available. And offer more adult swim classes including single sex classes (not just pandering to Muslims as I know certain people hate that. But lots of people will avoid mixed sex.classes out of embarrassment not religion). It wouldn't prevent all deaths (the Netherlands is better at teaching kids to swim but still sees annual drownings) but it would help. The problem is you have adults who can't swim but will jump into the water if they see a child (not even always their own) in trouble. You can tell people not to go into the water after drowning people all you like but when it's actually happening instinct takes over.

It’s not necessarily just swimming skills - but understanding when/where to avoid swimming. Swimming in a pool is very different from open water.

Yes, and to be fair the Lifeboat charity already put a lot of effort into education around this. But on hot days at the beach when other people are swimming etc it can feel quite safe. And even though I personally understand the dangers of swimming in water I don't know I can't say with hand on heart I wouldn't jump in after my own or someone else's children if they were screaming for help. Even though I know about cold water shock and hidden dangers below the surface. And I can swim- I actually had an argument with my partner who couldn't swim for ages but was insisting that "if it came to it he would be able to" to save a drowning child. I think people that haven't had experience swimming lessons are moreilely to underestimate the water than people that have.

I was away recently at a place with dangerous tides and sinking sand. I knew before I went so googled safe swimming times. But if I hadn't there was no noticeable signage. There was a board saying only swim when the lifeguard is in attendance, but it was faded and barely legible. It also struck me as odd that the lifeguard was only there in the safe periods when really it should be staffed during the dangerous times to warn people out of the water.

We got it drilled in us as kids by my parents that we were not to go any further than waste deep and no inflatables. I remember the lifeguards being very strict as well.

The float advice, I only learned much later.

Guidance regarding swimming in open water should apply to everyone.

I think you’re absolutely right. And actually there are a good many lovely people on MN, too. It’s just that the unpleasant ones shout the loudest on issues like PIP and immigration.

We are talking about 3 people who have lost their lives on a family day out, 3 children lost their parents and sister and you post that link.
