As previously stated, I never believed that Mahmood would do those things, given her previous form on welcoming asylum seekers physically on the beaches.

And I thought that last week a number of Labour MPs put forward a letter objecting to those proposals

If she is chancellor, then there is less embarrassment - not that any of them care - when those policies turn out to be absolute lies.

and now you can come here from Gaza and bring 18 relatives with you - going to assume everyone here has heard about that case.

Again, I find myself wondering - why do they hate us so much?

I think it's probably best I give that one a swerve - if he's referencing the 1990s a lot then it's pretty pointless, I could read a nice history book instead!

@RoseInAPot I don't generally follow politics on X because I like to have a stream of nice things! But I'm aware of her work and she does do very well. Sometimes I follow people and mute them to bump up their numbers. I might do that for her. I don't think I would've found out about the "city of Sanctuary" nonsense if not for her work. There's also an account called "the procurement files" who are doing a good job. It's just I think we're at the point where nobody cares and I don't know how we can make people care.

I suppose so many people are employed on the gravy train now, they got what they wanted, there's too many people invested in it for it to stop.

I don’t think Burnham wants to diverge from it, he voted for it too. You’re right it’s a big move from refugees welcome and not what Labour stand for but I guess they’ll overcome it if it gives them a chance. They’re not value driven but will say they are.

Unless it just fades out but I’m not sure how if it’s past the second reading.

I had a lovely morning at the hairdressers. Hair done, Mani Pedi. Son is coming home this weekend. So I popped into the shops. Innocently phoned DH do I need to buy beers for ds. Curt retort no there's some in the garage fridge. He hung up. I thought wtf have I done now. On the drive back I thought nope the bastard DH is not spoiling my day. He can throw a tantrum I'm not rising to it.

Got home put the shopping away. Turns out he's heard the Burnham speech including the toe curling homage to Kinnock and had been on the ceiling with rage while I was out 🙈

Burnham paid homage to Kinnock? Really?

I can imagine a brief salute to Kinnock beginning the process in the ‘80s of dragging Labour back to the right, and out of the hands of the crazy left, but since Burnham seems to want to give the impression of pivoting leftwards it all seems a bit odd.

I guess he’s trying to ride six horses at the same time, which is often a problem for Labour.

An ode to the Seventies.

Just before Thatcher got in there was the winter of discontent

Well I had an interesting afternoon too. End of year party for primary school leavers and their siblings. Women much younger than me absolutely raging about Burnham's speech. They were children during the seventies but remember the power cuts, the strikes. The fear of their parents. Filling flasks with hot water. Clock watching every day trying to fit cooking, washing etc into a few hours.

One said her dad was a police man high up in the force he had to organise support for various bodies. Cover the strikes etc. he hated the labour government.

Another said her dad was a miner, he hated the strikes, empty pay packets and no money to feed his family.

As for the younger mums they're absolutely anti immigration. And didn care who knew.

It really was an illuminating afternoon. It's not about the boomers, they're not getting the blame for once. It's the 35-45 year olds who were absolutely raging today.

They're even planning to reduce the bang in people's hands: 'noisy fireworks face potential ban'

I just saw a clip of Burnham. There’s so much red it’s overwhelming, even he matches the background.

I didn’t see or hear Burnham’s speech but I followed up reports online, including the BBC’s.

It is looking very much as I’ve expected in recent days. Burnham’s going to talk left, press the buttons of the silly old fools in Labour’s membership about the party’s marvellous history and the good old days of miners, lung disease and slum housing…and carry on with Reeves’s fiscal rules.

A con job on the Labour faithful basically.

Taxes look like they’ll go up but there’s so little left to squeeze without income tax hikes that it’ll just be gestures. And punctured growth of course.

None of these grandiose plans (which have not a jot of meat on the bones yet) are even remotely affordable.

I have a feeling that Burnham may be a truly terrible PM. When he was parading himself in the run up to Makerfield I genuinely thought he’d be a more considered and sensible man. I can’t wait for Blair to stick the boot in.

There’s a thread on being sick of Burnham already which made me laugh. So fast 😅😬

Evening all

I've just had a frustrating night out

Frustrating for a few reasons but one of them was political.... someone literally shouting about how much she hates Reform. This is the group I've mentioned before. It was one of their birthdays.

Firstly I do not understand why that conversation belongs on a birthday night out - it's like she's determined to raise the issue every single time. The lady whose birthday it was just looked at the floor.

Secondly, I dislike her approach generally - she has for example said in front of a churchgoer how much she hates religion and how she thinks it's totally ridiculous. Of course she's entitled to her opinion. Maybe I'm horribly old-fashioned, but I just don't think it's right to suddenly launch into a rant like that.

Thirdly, I feel like there's enough hate doing the rounds and a national treasure who also happens to be a vocal Reform supporter was actually murdered last week.

Anyway - that wasn't the only thing that pissed me off, there were other personal things and I would have actually claimed I had a headache and gone home or something if it hadn't been a birthday meal.

oh, I nearly forgot - there was also some horrible remarks about Margaret Thatcher made by others in the group.

I do not understand how I've moved to a right wing area and found myself surrounded by lefties.
