I’ll return to the other thread before it closes, but since Starmer’s final PMQs is topical I’ll say here that I thought the tone was right and the comments from all sides about Ann Widdecombe were genuine and important. Such a shame that some of the left’s foot soldiers are unable to rise to even that basic level of decency.

Starmer’s own farewell was clearly from the heart. If he hadn’t been so personally ghastly as leader when in opposition and as PM he might just have been remembered kindly.

Police have arrested a man for threatening to kill Nigel Farage, The Telegraph can disclose.

The suspect – who has described himself as a terrorist on social media – warned Mr Farage: “I am going to shoot you in the head if you win.”

It is the first time an instruction to police by the parliamentary authorities to investigate a threat to kill the Reform UK leader has resulted in an arrest.

I don’t think he’ll ever realise why he’s out but hey ho he’s gone now. Something at least.

Shabana Mahmood, home secretary, is set to become Britain’s next chancellor, according to three people briefed on the thinking of Andy Burnham.

Burnham’s spokesperson refused to comment on “speculation” and said cabinet roles would be assigned only on Monday after he becomes prime minister.

But one person briefed on the plan said: “Shabana is nailed down as chancellor. That’s definitely happening.” Another said Mahmood would go to the Treasury while the original frontrunner for the role of chancellor — Ed Miliband, the current energy secretary — was now likely to become foreign secretary.

Oooog that’s a curve I didn’t see coming…

Not a terrible decision, if it’s right. But what happens to Cooper then? Back to the Home Office would be a humiliation. I feel sorry for her. One of the few vaguely capable and experienced members of this government.

I doubt that Chancellor will be much of a job under Burnham anyway. He’s just full of meaningless, expensive shite policies which will need paying for.

It’s intriguing - Cooper for deputy PM? Does she fancy education?

Deputy PM is a political graveyard, and everyone - most of all cabinet ministers - knows it.

Cooper from HO to FCO to Education? That’s an equally embarrassing piss-take. She’d be mad or desperate to do that.

I see the line that Cooper is good and I think I’ve missed why. She was replaced by Mahmood.

It is interesting isn’t it? I don’t feel Yvette deserves a demotion unlike BP and RR…

Being adequately confident in a job and not bringing the ceiling down on the government is a general sign of some competence in any minister, but x1000 with this gang of useless losers.
