The number of workers paying the higher or additional rate of tax continues to soar as frozen thresholds pull hundreds of thousands more earners into the top tax bands this year, according to statistics from HM Revenue & Customs.

The number of higher-rate UK taxpayers, who earn more than £50,271 and pay a top marginal rate of 40p, is expected to rise to 7.7mn in the current tax year, up from 7.29mn in the previous year and nearly 2mn higher than in 2023-24, according to data released on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the number of additional-rate taxpayers, who earn more than £125,140 and pay the 45p rate of income tax, is projected to reach 1.29mn this year, up from 1.22mn a year earlier, and 893,000 in 2023-24, when the threshold was lowered from £150,000.

Great. The more people who pay higher rate tax the better, as the more people realise that when they vote at elections it is them and not someone else who pays the bills…

My thoughts on the disappointing result from Atlanta
At least we don't have Starmer hot footing it on a free Private Jet or Andy Burnham lauding it at a national ceremony ! Labour were actually putting out threads that England only win the World Cup under Labour. Obviously 1966 and all-that Harold Wilson, with Labour though they are actually like to believe that any Win would be down to Starmer, Rayner and that 'Fox' in the Box Rachel Reeves.

Seriously, you cannot sit on the edge of your own box for thirty minutes against the 2nd best side in the World and Expect to get away with it.

The last 30 minutes after Gordon scored was more 'Southgate than Southgate'. It is one thing in Mexico City with ten men another against Argentina with 11 men and likelihood of Extra Time.
In the end perhaps tiredness of the 'Ambush' in Mexico the brutal heat of Miami might have played its part on the players who looked very tired . Thus, if you have 26 player why take them if you don't use them Kobe Mainoo perhaps could have been use Foden Palmer could have been take offering perhaps a option to open up teams at the back last 20 minutes.

However, I think on hindsight from a team who are at times a 'shambles' at the back and realistically less gifted bar Kane Bellingham Rice and maybe Anderson than underperforming a 'morally' cowardly squads from 2002-2010 A Semi Final is our level.

One day we might win something senior, given that we keep knocking at the door, back to back Euro U21 Wins. The, last two Euro Finals in 2021/2024 2021 was the one set up for us everything was right Wembley 1-0 up against a 'Poor' Italy side and Southgate blew it !

Maybe Andy could have arranged that every one in the Country have a Free Pint. I wonder how long he can keep his party happy for. It’s not a good time to try to herd 400 fractious, self-important Labour MPs. Many of them are brand new and fear that having given up their little fiefdoms in local government or easy salaries in the public sector, unions, NGOs and the like, they’ll be unemployed and unemployable.

Al Carns would be all right. He could get a job as an instructor on that SAS programme on the telly. And that Essex Labour MP who’s the biggest landlord in the commons is sitting pretty. But most would face being hard-up nobodies.

Achievement: some trade union work, won an ultra safe labour seat and helped Andy win a bi-election in another ultra safe labour seat, with only real opponent a pro Russia reform candidate with appalling views on women.

What spectacular achievements, what a track record, what a story of unbridled success against all odds. We should really get such a battle hardened MP with such a wealth of experience tackling really difficult economic issues to run something really important.

Argentina has accused a British warship of making an “illegal incursion” into its waters, hours after its World Cup semi-final victory over England.

Pablo Quirno, Argentina’s foreign minister, said HMS Medway was making an “unconsulted and illegal” journey through Argentine territorial waters, accusing the Royal Navy of a “military incursion”.

He said the River-class offshore patrol vessel had transited through Argentine territorial waters along the coasts of Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego without prior notification.

Writing on X to express “the strongest rejection” of the action, he said “a formal note of protest” over the ship’s movements had been lodged with the British embassy.

Despite the incident having taken place earlier this month, Mr Quirno chose to make the complaint public hours after Argentina had beaten England 2-1 in a fiery World Cup clash on Wednesday night.
